Bacillus thuringiensis NTB-1 isolated from soil samples in Korea produces ovoidal parasporal inclusions with proteins of approximately 24-40kDa in size. Although serological study indicated that the isolate has a flagella (H) antigen identical with subsp. israelensis, it seemed to be non-insecticidal against Lepidoptera and Coleoptera as well as Diptera. To investigate the activity of non-insecticidal B.thuringiensis transformed with insecticidal crystal protein genes, cryIVD and cytA genes of B. thuringiensis subsp. morrisoni PG-14, highly toxic to mosquito larvae, were introduced into the isolate NTB-1. The expression of mosquitocidal crystal protein genes in NTB-1 was characterized by SDS-PAGE analysis and electron microscopy. The results showed that crystalline inclusions of host, CryIVD and CytA were stably expressed in the transformant. However, the mosquitocidal activity of transformant was similar to that of B. thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki Cry-B harbouring cryIVD and cytA genes, demonstrating that a synergistic effect by an interaction of both introduced insecticidal and resident non-insecticidal crystal proteins was not observed.

High performance solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) based on gadolinia-doped ceria (GDC) electrolyte are demonstrated for intermediate temperature operation. The inherent technical limitations of the GDC electrolyte in sinterability and mechanical properties are overcome by applying sol-gel coating technique to the screen-printed film. When the quality of the electrolyte film is enhanced by the additional sol-gel coating, the OCV and maximum power density increase from 0.73 to 0.90 V and from 0.55 to 0.95 W cm<SUP>-2</SUP>, respectively, at 650 <SUP>o</SUP>C with humidified hydrogen (3% H<SUB>2</SUB>O) as fuel and air as oxidant. The impedance analysis reveals that the reinforcement of the thin electrolyte with sol-gel coating significantly reduces the polarization resistance. Elementary reaction steps for the anode and cathode are analyzed based on the systematic impedance study, and the relation between the structural integrity of the electrolyte and the electrode polarization is discussed in detail.

The effect of octacosanol administration on endurance exercise capacity was invesgated. The subjects of this study were healthy-university students to test the effect of octacosanol. Octacosanol(medication group: n=15, athletic group: n=14, 300㎎/capsule, 4 capsules/day) or soy bean oil as placebo(n=15) was administered for 30 days and parameters related to the endurance exercise capacity were measured through incremental exercise testing to all-out before and after each treatment. Both VO_2max and all out time were significantly increased by administration of octacosanol as compared to placebo group(p<0.05). RQmax was significantly decreased in octacosanol as compared to placebo group(p<0.05). The administration of octacosanol had a trend of decrease as compared to placebo group in rating of perceived exertion(RPE) scale. Although the exact mechanism of effect caused by octacosanol administration is not known, it is possible that octacosanol increases the lipolysis and cardiacrespiratory function. From the results, it is suggested that the administration of octacosanol can be increased the endurance exercise capacity.

<P>Nitrogen (N) is the most important macronutrient for plant growth and grain yields. For rice crops, nitrate and ammonium are the major N sources. To explore the genomic responses to ammonium supplements in rice roots, we used 17-day-old seedlings grown in the absence of external N that were then exposed to 0.5 mM (NH4)(2)SO4 for 3 h. Transcriptomic profiles were examined by microarray experiments. In all, 634 genes were up-regulated at least two-fold by the N-supplement when compared with expression in roots from untreated control plants. Gene Ontology (GO) enrichment analysis revealed that those upregulated genes are associated with 23 GO terms. Among them, metabolic processes for diverse amino acids (i.e., aspartate, threonine, tryptophan, glutamine, L-phenylalanine, and thiamin) as well as nitrogen compounds are highly over-represented, demonstrating that our selected genes are suitable for studying the N-response in roots. This enrichment analysis also indicated that nitrogen is closely linked to diverse transporter activities by primary metabolites, including proteins (amino acids), lipids, and carbohydrates, and is associated with carbohydrate catabolism and cell wall organization. Integration of results from omics analysis of metabolic pathways and transcriptome data using the MapMan tool suggested that the TCA cycle and pathway for mitochondrial electron transport are co-regulated when rice roots are exposed to ammonium. We also investigated the expression of N-responsive marker genes by performing a comparative analysis with root samples from plants grown under different NH4+ treatments. The diverse responses to such treatment provide useful insight into the global changes related to the shift from an N-deficiency to an enhanced N-supply in rice, a model crop plant. <P>In this paper, we propose a new/next-generation type of CT examinations, the so-called Interior Computed Tomography (ICT), which may presumably lead to dose reduction to the patient outside the target region-of-interest (ROI), in dental x-ray imaging. Here an x-ray beam from each projection position covers only a relatively small ROI containing a target of diagnosis from the examined structure, leading to imaging benefits such as decreasing scatters and system cost as well as reducing imaging dose. We considered the compressed-sensing (CS) framework, rather than common filtered-backprojection (FBP)-based algorithms, for more accurate ICT reconstruction. We implemented a CS-based ICT algorithm and performed a systematic simulation to investigate the imaging characteristics. Simulation conditions of two ROI ratios of 0.28 and 0.14 between the target and the whole phantom sizes and four projection numbers of 360, 180, 90, and 45 were tested. We successfully reconstructed ICT images of substantially high image quality by using the CS framework even with few-view projection data, still preserving sharp edges in the images. <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We have recently developed precise x-ray grids having strip densities in the range of 100 – 250 lines/inch by adopting the precision sawing process and carbon interspace material for the demands of specific x-ray imaging techniques. However, quality assurance in the grid manufacturing has not yet satisfactorily conducted because grid strips of a high strip density are often invisible through an x-ray nondestructive testing with a flat-panel detector of an ordinary pixel resolution (>100 μ m). In this work, we propose a useful method to evaluate actual grid strip densities over the Nyquist sampling rate based on the moiré artifact analysis. We performed a systematic simulation and experiment with several sample grids and a detector having a 143- μ m pixel resolution to verify the proposed quality assurance method. According to our results, the relative differences between the nominal and the evaluated grid strip densities were within 0.2% and 1.8% in the simulation and experiment, respectively, which demonstrates that the proposed method is viable with an ordinary detector having a moderate pixel resolution for quality assurance in grid manufacturing.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> The precise carbon-interspaced antiscatter grids have been studied. </LI> <LI> It is proposed for a useful method to evaluate actual grid strip densities over the Nyquist sampling rate based on the moiré artifact analysis. </LI> <LI> The simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method is viable with an ordinary detector having a moderate pixel resolution (>100 μ m) for quality assurance in grid manufacturing. </LI> </UL> </P>
