Effects of Chitosan Intake on Bone Mass, Bone Related Metabolic Markers in Ovariectomized Rats

In the present study we examined both the etiology of bone loss induced by dietary chitosan and the preventive effect of vitamin C supplementation. Rats were OVX and maintained on one of the following diets for 4 weeks: 10% cellulose (CE), 10% chitosan (CH) and 10% chitosan with sodium ascorbate (CHVC). Vitamin C supplementation to CH caused an increase in Ca and P contents of femurs as well as BMD of L4, with a decrease in urinary Ca excretion. There was no significant difference in intestinal Ca absorption between CH and CE, whereas CH intake significantly reduced intestinal P absorption. CH caused a significant reduction in BMD and stiffness of femurs as well as fourth lumbar vertebrae (L4). The bone loss in CH rats was accompanied with an increase in urinary Ca excretion and a decrease in serum Ca as well as a significant increment in serum PTH and 1,25(OH)2D3. These results indicates that dietary chitosan with low Ca intake possibly induces the loss of bone mass by enhacing urinary Ca excretion, rather than by inhibiting Ca absorption, and that vitamin C supplementation could prevent bone loss caused by chitosan through the increment of retained Ca followed by suppression of urinary Ca excretion.

Purpose: This study aims to test if the age of pregnant women affects the perception, experience, and attitude towards complementary alternative therapy (CAT), by investigating the perception, experience, and attitude of pregnant women under the age of 35, and above 35 (Advanced Maternal Age). The study will 1) find the general characteristics of pregnant women under and over the age of 35 2) compare the perception, behavior, and experience of pregnant women under and over the age of 35, and 3) find the comparison of the perception, behavior, and experience according to the general characteristics of pregnant women under and over the age of 35. Method: The subjects of this study are composed of 44 women under the age of 35 and 44 women above the age of 35, totaling 88 pregnant women visiting midwiferies, obstetrics and gynecology, and baby fairs in Seoul and Gyeong-Gi area. Data for this study was collected from November 28, 2015 to January 6, 2016 for 40 days. The collected data analyzed mean, standard deviation, t test, ANOVA, and chi-square by using SPSS 23.0. Result Results show that there is a significant difference in the perception, attitude, and experience of the two-sample groups in the use of CAT. The question of “what is most necessary when applying CAT in a hospital clinical environment” for the perception criteria came out with the results of t=9.980, p<.05. For the attitude, results showed that the answers of pregnant women under the age of 35 displayed a more positive attitude towards CAT. (t=2.421, p<.05) Lastly, in the experience section, pregnant women under the age of 35 showed more CAT use than the other sample group. Conclusion Results have shown that there is a difference in the perception, behavior, and experience between the two sample groups. Therefore further research on the efficacy and the adverse effects of CAT needs to be done.
Functional Connectivity Map of Retinal Ganglion Cells for Retinal Prosthesis

Retinal prostheses are being developed to restore vision for the blind with retinal diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa (RP) or age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Among the many issues for prosthesis development, stimulation encoding strategy is one of the most essential electrophysiological issues. The more we understand the retinal circuitry how it encodes and processes visual information, the greater it could help decide stimulation encoding strategy for retinal prosthesis. Therefore, we examined how retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) in in-vitro retinal preparation act together to encode a visual scene with multielectrode array (MEA). Simultaneous recording of many RGCs with MEA showed that nearby neurons often fired synchronously, with spike delays mostly within 1 ms range. This synchronized firing - narrow correlation - was blocked by gap junction blocker, heptanol, but not by glutamatergic synapse blocker, kynurenic acid. By tracking down all the RGC pairs which showed narrow correlation, we could harvest 40 functional connectivity maps of RGCs which showed the cell cluster firing together. We suggest that finding functional connectivity map would be useful in stimulation encoding strategy for the retinal prosthesis since stimulating the cluster of RGCs would be more efficient than separately stimulating each individual RGC.

저자들은 복시와 두통을 호소하고 편측 눈의 바깥쪽 회전이 완전히 제한된 소아에서 편측 외전신경마비 이외의 신경학적 검사상 정상 소견을 보이고,정상 뇌 MRI 소견 및 정상 뇌압, 그리고 미생물학검사에서 정상으로 특발성 외전신경마비로 진단하였고, 특별한 치료 없이 10일 내에 회복된 양성 경과를 보인 증례를 경험하여 보고하는 바이다. Benign abducens nerve palsy is rare in children. Identifiable causes of abducens nerve palsy include neoplasm, elevated intracranial pressure, infection and trauma. Isolated abducens nerve palsy with unknown etiology is classified as benign or idiopathic. The diagnosis is made by excluding underlying pathologies. Prognosis is favorable. Most patients have been found to recover spontaneously within 6 months. Recurrent palsy is observed in some patients and is more pronounced in younger girls with left-sided palsy. Even the recurrent cases, however, are still benign. We report a case of benign abducens nerve palsy presenting diplopia and headache with normal results from MRIs and microbiologic studies. The patient underwent rapid, spontaneous recovery.
