<P>The use of small interfering RNA (siRNA) with chemotherapeutic drugs has a synergistic effect of inhibiting target genes. Furthermore, theranostics, which enables therapeutic drug delivery and provides immediate diagnosis, is also emerging as a promising technique. In line with this novel concept, we have developed an albumin-based nanomedicine capable of combination therapy (chemo-and gene therapy) and photoacoustic imaging. The multifunctional (combination therapy and photoacoustic imaging) theranostic nanomedicine contains paclitaxel (PTX), siRNA, and indocyanine green (ICG). Sulfhydryl-modified siRNA and sulfhydryl-modified human serum albumin form more stable nanoparticles mainly through the disulfide bond, unlike prevalent nanomedicines (e. g., lipid-based nanomedicine or siRNA bioconjugates). The albumin-based multifunctional nanomedicine shows double gene inhibition ability and a synergistic effect of chemoand gene therapy. Inhibition of the expression of target genes (Bcl-2, VEGF, etc.) and simultaneous treatment with PTX exhibit a synergistic effect compared to single treatment in vitro and in vivo. Furthermore, using ICG, photoacoustic imaging was very efficient. Our study demonstrates that this multifunctional theranostic nanomedicine could perform co-delivery of PTX and siRNA and yield a synergistic effect for target cells. By virtue of combination gene therapy, this the ranostic nanomedicine has great potential to cure various diseases, including cancer, and aid the prognosis of target tumor cells or tissues by photoacoustic imaging. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of the development of a multifunctional theranostic nanomedicine for combination therapy and non-invasive photoacoustic imaging.</P>
A systematic approach towards accident analysis and prevention

A systematic approach towards accident analysis and prevention has been developed. It relies on system theory as an incident causation model, and adopts a hybrid model for identifying elements of the safety management system. PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) process, commonly practiced in business for quality control, has been applied to defining components of the system. Using the experts’ judgment, accident data and their reported causes are correlated to the defined components, with RBI (risk-based inspection) defined consequence scores as weighting factors. The application of this approach allows users such as governments and companies to identify and prioritize among causes of accidents and near-misses in the petrochemical industry. A case study using the accident data of Yeosu petrochemical complex from 1990 to 2004 has been applied to illustrate insights readily obtainable by using the developed analysis technique. The results suggest comprehensive identification and ranking of accident causes for effective prevention of accidents in the future.

본 연구는 국내 기능성 축산식품 관리제도 도입과 관련하여, 이를 반영하기 위한 기능성 물질(성분)의 과학적 분석기술 및 기능성 축산물별 검사방법 등 세부관리기준과 인증 방안을 마련하여 시행규칙을 제안하고자 한다. 기능성 축산식품을 관리하기 위한 새로운 법률 개정에 발맞추어 기능성 물질(성분)의 효용성(efficacy)과 안전성(safety)을 확인(검증)할 수 있는 분석.평가기술의 재정립을 통하여, 기능성 식품의 분석.평가 현황을 파악하고, 축산식품을 위한 기능성 물질의 범위를 정하여 이에 부합하는 표준검사법을 확립하고, 표준화를 제안한다. 본 연구를 통해 그 동안 우리나라에서 건강지향식품들의 지속적 노력에도 불 구하고, 질적인 발전을 이루지 못한 과거의 문제점을 해결하여, 합리적인 관리체계 안에서 안전하고 우수한 품질을 갖는 기능성 축산식품을 제조.판매하는데 이바지 하며, 소비자의 건강증진은 물론 잘못된 건강기능식품의 섭취로 인한 피해를 방지하고자 한다. This study aims to suggest a management system consisting of functional ingredients by establishing guidelines for theanalysis of functional animal products in Korea. Further, the guidelines can be used for validity tests of functional animalproducts. In addition, we can standardize the management system for details, and frame new laws for functional animalproducts. We researched the current studies on the analysis and assessment of functional foods, and established standardmethods of analysis. We devised new analysis and assessment techniques to determine the efficacy and safety of functionalingredients for the legislation and management of functional animal products. This study may contribute to not only thesafety and quality of functional animal products but also to enhancing the nation`s health and the national image as beinghealth-oriented, through improvements in the productivity and quality of functional animal products.

<P>The simple type conversion of n-type silicon nanowires (SiNWs) to p-type by the diffusion of Au ions is demonstrated in this study. An Au thin film with a thickness of 10 nm was thermally deposited on an n-type SiNW and a rapid thermal annealing process was performed subsequently to diffuse the Au ions into the SiNW. The electrical characteristics of a back-gate field-effect transistor with a channel composed of the Au-diffused SiNW show that the Au-diffused SiNW acts as a p-type one. The type conversion phenomenon of the SiNW caused by the diffusion of Au ions is discussed in detail in this paper.</P>

n형 특성을 가진 실리콘 나노선을 금확산을 이용하여 p형 특성을 가진 상태의 나노선으로 변환하였다. Back-gate 형태로 제작된 n형의 실리콘 나노선 전계 효과 트랜지스터를 제작한 후, 채널로 사용되는 나노선 위에 금을 열증착방법을 이용하여 증착했다. 이후, 급속열처리공정을 통해 실리콘 나노선에 금이온을 확산시켰다. 나노선의 특성 변환을 확인하기 위하여 전계 효과 트랜지스터의 특성곡선을 통해 그 변화를 관찰하였다.

Background and Objectives: We investigated whether extra-pulmonary vein (PV) ablation targeting a high maximal slope of the action potential duration restitution curve (Smax) improves the rhythm outcome of persistent atrial fibrillation (PeAF) ablation. Methods: In this open-label, multi-center, randomized, and controlled trial, 178 PeAF patients were randomized with 1:1 ratio to computational modeling-guided virtual Smax ablation (V-Smax) or empirical ablation (E-ABL) groups. Smax maps were generated by computational modeling based on atrial substrate maps acquired during clinical procedures in sinus rhythm. Smax maps were generated during the clinical PV isolation (PVI). The V-Smax group underwent an additional extra-PV ablation after PVI targeting the virtual high Smax sites. Results: After a mean follow-up period of 12.3±5.2 months, the clinical recurrence rates (25.6% vs. 23.9% in the V-Smax and the E-ABL group, p=0.880) or recurrence appearing as atrial tachycardia (11.1% vs. 5.7%, p=0.169) did not differ between the 2 groups. The post-ablation cardioversion rate was higher in the V-Smax group than E-ABL group (14.4% vs. 5.7%, p=0.027). Among antiarrhythmic drug-free patients (n=129), the AF freedom rate was 78.7% in the V-Smax group and 80.9% in the E-ABL group (p=0.776). The total procedure time was longer in the V-Smax group (p=0.008), but no significant difference was found in the major complication rates (p=0.497) between the groups. Conclusions: Unlike a dominant frequency ablation, the computational modeling-guided V-Smax ablation did not improve the rhythm outcome of the PeAF ablation and had a longer procedure time.
Performance of prototype neutron detectors for Large Acceptance Multi-Purpose Spectrometer at RAON

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The performance of the prototype modules of neutron detectors for the Large Acceptance Multi-Purpose Spectrometer (LAMPS) was investigated, using cosmic muons and neutron beams at 65 and 392 MeV, provided by the Research Center for Nuclear Physics (RCNP). The timing and position resolutions were estimated using cosmic muons as 309 ps and 4.8 cm, respectively. The energy resolution depended on the incident energy of neutrons: 1.3% at 65 MeV and 3.1% at 392 MeV. The neutron-detection efficiency also showed weak energy dependence as it decreased from (9.0 ± 1.6)% at 65 MeV to (6.3 ± 1.0)% at 392 MeV.</P>
