        Letters to the Editor : Computer-aided proximal caries diagnosis correlation with clinical examination and histology

        We are writing this letter to correct misimpressions that could arise from a paper your journal recently published concerning Logocon Caries Detector (LCD). Kang et al reported a relatively poor performance for LCD as compared to other studies. However, when compared to the performance of the imdependent team of dentists who evaluated the same tooth surfaces visually without using LCD, one get a much different impression of LCD. Table 1 show the comparison. These visual results were collected as a part of Dr. Kang's study at the University of Louisville School of Dentistry and were included in the draft manuscript, but were unfortunately omitted from the final paper without the knowledge of two of the listed co-authors(AGF and JPS).

        本文調硏了淸代皇傢醫療的情況。特別是我們查閱了慈喜太後的病歷反映出馬培之醫生(1820-1903)獨特的醫療觀念。這一章主要講馬 醫生的醫療理論,充滿了陰陽相互作用的槪念。用他的二陽病的疾病理論來治療女性病人被看作是陰。在他的治療策略中他認爲心臟和脾臟是成功治療的關鍵。這个方發源于他相信身體疾病是因爲精神上的不安造成的。這种情况也表明即使看起來一直向前發展的醫學病歷政治總是以某种形式存在。然而,在編輯那些被後代傳誦或想象的人們的情况是常常受記載方式的影響,怎樣寫他們以及是否記錄在任何時間被簒改。這个問題因抗着歷史學傢們。最明顯的例子就是非常复雜的慈喜案歷,證据總是部分的,扭曲的,含糊不淸的。這个案歷表明盡管有這些局限,檔案是歷史學傢最重要的來源。

        고속도로 하부 횡단 배수시설로 사용되는 파형 플래스틱 관의 덮개 요건

        This project investigated the use of two types of thermoplastic pipes, High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) and Poly-vinyl Chloride (PVC), as cross-drains under highways. Pipes ranging from 0.3 m (12 in.) to 1.5 m (60 in.) in diameter were evaluated under deep fills, minimum cover, and construction loads. In addition to a comprehensive literature review, an analytical study into the allowable fill heights for thermoplastic pipes and a field study to observe the installation and performance of the pipe in service conditions were conducted. Based on the study findings, recommendations regarding how and when thermoplastic pipe should be installed are provided.

        추간판내 유전자 치료 : 퇴행성 질환에 있어 치료의 의의 Therapeutic Implication in Degenerative Disc Disease

        연구계획 : 인간의 추간판 세포와 가토의 추간판 조직을 이용하여 시험관내 및 생체내 실험적 연구를 시행하였다. 목 적 : 3차원적으로 배양된 인간의 추간판 세포와 생체내의 가토의 추간판에 치료적 유전자를 전달하고 기질 생성 효과가 있는지를 알아보는 것이다. 대상 및 방법 : 12례의 추간판 술실에서 채취된 추간판 조직에서 세포를 유리하고 이를 3차원적으로 배양한 후 Ad/TGF-β1으로 감염시켰다. 15마리의 가토를 사용하여 전방 도달법으로 추간판을 노출시키고 Ad/TGF-β을 주입한 다음 6주 후 희생시켰다. 배양약의 1Ad/TGF-β1농도는 ELISA법으로 측정하였고 새로이 생성된 당단백은 35S-sulfate을 이용한 Sephadex G-25PD-10 column chromatography 법으로 측정하였다. 결과 : Ad/TGF-β1로 감염된 인간의 추간판 세포에서 TGF-β1생성은 증가하였고 Ad/TGF-β1로 감염된 가토의 추간판 조직은 대조군에 비해 200%의 TGF-β1생성 증가가 있었다. Ad/TGF-β1로 감염된 인간의 추간판 세포에서 290%의 당단백 생성 증가가 있었고(p<0.05) Ad/TGF-β1로 감염된 가토의 추간판 조직은 대조군에 비해 85%의 당단백 생성 증가가 있었다(p<0.05). 결론 : 시험관 및 생체내 실험에서 유전자 전달군은 대조군에 비해 의의 있는 당단백 생성 증가가 있었는데 이는 아데노바이러스를 이용한 추간판내 유저자 전달법이 추간판 퇴행의 치료와 예방에 적용 가능한 접근법임을 시사한다. Study Design : In vitro and in vivo studies to determine the anabolic effects of entervertebral desc (IVD) to adenovirus-mediated therapeutic gene transfer. Objectives : To quantify the anabolic effect of human IVD cells in vitro and rabbit IVD in vivo to therapeutic gene transfer. Sumary of Literature Review : An alternative possibility to delivery of growth factors, in continuous manner, is the genetic modification of disc cells through gene transfer. Contemplating to extend this approach to treatment of disc degeneration, it is neccessary to demonstrate anabolic effect of human IVD cells and rabbit disc to therapeutic gene transfer. Materials and Methods : In vitro:IVD tissue was obtained from twelve patients. IVD cells were then isolated, cultured, and transduced with Ad/TGF-β1. Genetically modified disc cells were incorporated into alginate beads and cultured. In vivo:Fifteen skeletally mature New Zealand white rabbit were used. 15ul of saline containing Ad/TGF-β1 were injected into the nucleus pulposus of the disc in six rabbits. All rabbits were sacrificed 6 weeks after surgery. Nucleus pulposus tissues were harvested, weighted, and cultured. Conditioned medium of alginate bead and rabbit disc tissue cultures were subjected to ELISA to detect TGF-β1 production. Newly synthesized proteoglycan were analyzed using chromatography on Sephadex G-25 in PD-10 columns after S35-sulfatged incorporation. Results : Concentration of TGF-β1 increased over time in alginate beads cultures transduced with Ad/TGF-β1. At 6 weeks nucleus pulposus tissue from the disc injected with Ad/TGF-β1 exhibited 200%(p<0.05) increase in TGF-β1 production. There was statistically significant 290% increase in newly synthesizd\ed proteoglycan in alginate cultures transduced with Ad/TGF-β1 (p<0.05) compared to control. At 6 weeks nucleus pulposus tissue from the disc injected with Ad/TGF-β1 exhibited 85% increase in proteoglyan synthesis (p<0.05) over that of intact control. Conclusion : In this study, we observed the robust upregulation of proteoglycan synthesis in gene transferred disc cells in vitro and in vivo-indicating good prospects for biologic effects of therapeutic gene therapy in the disc using adenovirus-mediated approach.

        Structural and functional characterization of <i>Caenorhabditis elegans</i> α-catenin reveals constitutive binding to β-catenin and F-actin

        <P>Intercellular epithelial junctions formed by classical cadherins, beta-catenin, and the actin-binding protein alpha-catenin link the actin cytoskeletons of adjacent cells into a structural continuum. These assemblies transmit forces through the tissue and respond to intracellular and extracellular signals. However, the mechanisms of junctional assembly and regulation are poorly understood. Studies of cadherin-catenin assembly in a number of metazoans have revealed both similarities and unexpected differences in the biochemical properties of the cadherin center dot catenin complex that likely reflect the developmental and environmental requirements of different tissues and organisms. Here, we report the structural and biochemical characterization of HMP-1, the Caenorhabditis elegans alpha-catenin homolog, and compare it with mammalian alpha-catenin. HMP-1 shares overall similarity in structure and actin-binding properties, but displayed differences in conformational flexibility and allosteric regulation from mammalian alpha-catenin. HMP-1 bound filamentous actin with an affinity in the single micromolar range, even when complexed with the beta-catenin homolog HMP-2 or when present in a complex of HMP-2 and the cadherin homolog HMR-1, indicating that HMP-1 binding to F-actin is not allosterically regulated by the HMP-2.HMR-1 complex. The middle (i.e. M) domain of HMP-1 appeared to be less conformationally flexible than mammalian alpha-catenin, which may underlie the dampened effect of HMP-2 binding on HMP-1 actin-binding activity compared with that of the mammalian homolog. In conclusion, our data indicate that HMP-1 constitutively binds beta-catenin and F-actin, and although the overall structure and function of HMP-1 and related alpha-catenins are similar, the vertebrate proteins appear to be under more complex conformational regulation.</P>

        Electrohydrodynamic pulsed-inkjet characteristics of various inks containing aluminum particles

        As nano-sized silver particles are prohibitively expensive, lower cost materials (e.g., micro-sized aluminum) are sought for the manufacture of conducting electrodes. Inks containing various aluminum weight percentages are dot-printed onto a stainless-steel substrate with an electrohydrodynamic (EHD) inkjet, which is superior to thermal and piezoelectric inkjets for inks containing larger particles because it ejects drops smaller than the nozzle diameter. Various ink solvents (ethanol, octanol, and diethylene glycol) are formulated with aluminum particles from 1 to 10wt%. EHD inkjet characteristics such as drop-separation distance, drop size, drop-to-substrate impact velocity, and required voltage are reported. The ink's thermo-fluid properties are the primary factors controlling drop characteristics and printing quality.

        Comparison of blood lead and blood and plasma {delta}-aminolevulinic acid concentrations as biomarkers for lead poisoning in cattle.

        <P>Lead (Pb) concentrations in whole blood and 관-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) concentrations in plasma and whole blood from 37 cattle with suspected Pb exposure were determined in order to investigate the usefulness of ALA as a biological indicator for Pb poisoning in cattle. Cows were divided into 4 groups based on blood Pb, as follows: <30 ppb (group 1), 30-100 ppb (group 2), 100-300 ppb (group 3), and >300 ppb (group 4). The derivatization reaction for ALA was improved by a greater than 2-fold measure in whole blood and by a 10-fold measure in plasma by adding 75 and 50 µl of 0.1 N HCl, respectively. Blood Pb concentrations ranged from <25 ppb to 1,006 ppb (185.5 ± 254.9 ppb), with 17 samples containing >50 ppb Pb. Delta-aminolevulinic acid concentrations in whole blood and plasma ranged from <62.7 ppb to 96.9 ppb (77.4 ± 8.4 ppb) and from <5.0 ppb to 24.0 ppb (4.6 ± 3.8 ppb), respectively. Whole blood ALA did not correlate with blood lead concentrations in any group. Increase in plasma ALA concentration was dependent on blood Pb concentration. There was no correlation between blood Pb concentration and plasma ALA concentration in group 2 (n ????4), but correlation coefficients were 0.736 in group 3 and 0.807 in group 4, respectively. The correlation coefficient was increased to 0.851 when groups 3 and 4 were combined. Based on these observations, in cattle, plasma ALA is a more reliable biological biomarker for Pb exposure than is blood ALA.</P>
