Background Gut microbiota provide numerous types of metabolites that humans cannot produce and have a huge influence on the host metabolism. Accordingly, gut bacteria-derived metabolites can be employed as a resource to develop anti-obesity and metabolism-modulating drugs. Objective This study aimed to examine the anti-adipogenic effect of 3-phenylpropionylglycine (PPG), which is a glycine conjugate of bacteria-derived 3-phenylpropionic acid (PPA). Methods The effect of PPG on preadipocyte-to-adipocyte differentiation was evaluated in 3T3-L1 differentiation models and the degree of the differentiation was estimated by Oil red O staining. The molecular mechanisms of the PPG effect were investigated with transcriptome analyses using RNA-sequencing and quantitative real-time PCR. Results PPG suppressed lipid droplet accumulation during the adipogenic differentiation of 3T3-L1 cells, which is attributed to down-regulation of lipogenic genes such as acetyl CoA carboxylase 1 (Acc1) and fatty acid synthase (Fasn). However, other chemicals with chemical structures similar to PPG, including cinnamoylglycine and hippuric acid, had little effect on the lipid accumulation of 3T3-L1 cells. In transcriptomic analysis, PPG suppressed the expression of adipogenesis and metabolism-related gene sets, which is highly associated with downregulation of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) signaling pathway. Protein-protein association network analysis suggested adiponectin as a hub gene in the network of genes that were differentially expressed genes in response to PPG treatment. Conclusion PPG inhibits preadipocyte-to-adipocyte differentiation by suppressing the adiponectin-PPAR pathway. These data provide a potential candidate from bacteria-derived metabolites with anti-adipogenic effects.
An Edge-based Method to Classify Open and Closed Eyes for Monitoring Driver’s Drowsiness
Jaeik Jo,Sung Joo Lee,Youn Joo Lee,Ho Gi Jung,Kang Ryoung Park,Jaihie Kim 대한전자공학회 2010 ICEIC:International Conference on Electronics, Inf Vol.1 No.1
Monitoring the drowsiness and inattention of a driver plays an important role in preventing car accidents. Previous researches show that many vehicular accidents in highway are caused by the fatigue due to long-time driving, inattention or dozing of a driver. To resolve these problems, we propose a method to classify open and closed eyes by analyzing horizontal edge of eye images. After initial locations of face and eyes are found by using object detection methods such as Adaboost, an edge-based method is used to extract feature from detected eye image. Then, open and closed eyes are classified by the threshold based on Bayesian rule and analysis of extracted feature. Experimental results show that open and closed eyes are reliably classified in actual vehicular environments.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between university image, student satisfaction, trust, and word of mouth in the quality of education service provided by the university for the survival and growth. The results of the second-order structural model testing are as follows. First, educational service quality has more influence on university image than student satisfaction. As a result of examining the sub-dimensions of educational service quality, the degree of relative influence is in the order of lecture contents, teaching method, teaching attitude, and communication. Second, university image has the most influence on student satisfaction in the effect of university image on student satisfaction, trust and word of mouth. Third, student satisfaction has a higher effect on trust in the effect of student satisfaction on trust and word of mouth. Finally, lecture content(0.938) and teaching method(0.923) were found to be the most important factors of educational service quality, and their influence on university image, student satisfaction, and word of mouth is bigger than the other factors. Although teaching quality, which is the most important service in the education service provided by the university, does not exceed instructor quality, it affects student satisfaction and positively affects the image and loyalty of the university as a result. In order to improve the performance such as word of mouth and trust, the teaching contents and proficiency of each individual should be strengthened.

N6-Methyladenosine (m6A) RNA modification plays a critical role in the posttranscriptional regulation of gene expression. Alterations in cellular m6A levels and m6A-related genes have been reported in many cancers, but whether they play oncogenic or tumor-suppressive roles is inconsistent across cancer types. We investigated common features of alterations in m6A modification and m6A-related genes during carcinogenesis by analyzing transcriptome data of 11 solid tumors from The Cancer Genome Atlas database and our in-house gastric cancer cohort. We calculated m6A writer (W), eraser (E), and reader (R) signatures based on corresponding gene expression. Alterations in the W and E signatures varied according to the cancer type, with a strong positive correlation between the W and E signatures in all types. When the patients were divided according to m6A levels estimated by the ratio of the W and E signatures, the prognostic effect of m6A was inconsistent according to the cancer type. The R and especially the R2 signatures (based on the expression of IGF2BPs) were upregulated in all cancers. Patients with a high R2 signature exhibited poor prognosis across types, which was attributed to enrichment of cell cycle- and epithelial–mesenchymal transition-related pathways. Our study demonstrates common features of m6A alterations across cancer types and suggests that targeting m6A R proteins is a promising strategy for cancer treatment.

Yongkeun Song,Jaeik Shin,Sungho Cho,Seunghoon Yoo,Ilsung Cho,Eunho Kim,Wongyun Jung,Sanghyoun Choi,오경민 한국물리학회 2015 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.67 No.1
We investigated the parameter optimization of the ridge filter’s thickness for carbon-ion therapy by using a Monte Carlo simulation. For this study, a ridge filter was designed for the spreadout Bragg peak (SOBP) by considering the relative biological effectiveness (RBE). The thickness, height, and width of the ridge filter were designed by using the FLUKA and the GEANT4 codes, and we analyzed and compared the results of the physical dose distributions for the FLUKA and the GEANT4 codes. The results showed that the minimum width of the groove for the ridge filter should be at least 0.5 cm for an appropriate biological dose. The SOBP sections were 8 cm, 9 cm, and 10 cm, respectively, when the heights were 3.5 cm, 4.0 cm, and 4.5 cm. The height of the ridge filter was designed to be associated with the SOBP width. Also, the results for the FLUKA and the GEANT4 codes showed that the average value of the difference was 3% and that the maximum error was 5%; however, the trends were similar. Therefore, the height and the width of the groove for the ridge filter are important parameters for deciding the length and the plateau of the SOBP.
Real-Time Gaze Estimator Based on Driver's Head Orientation for Forward Collision Warning System
Sung Joo Lee,Jaeik Jo,Ho Gi Jung,Kang Ryoung Park,Jaihie Kim IEEE 2011 IEEE transactions on intelligent transportation sy Vol.12 No.1

This paper presents a vision-based real-time gaze zone estimator based on a driver's head orientation composed of yaw and pitch. Generally, vision-based methods are vulnerable to the wearing of eyeglasses and image variations between day and night. The proposed method is novel in the following four ways: First, the proposed method can work under both day and night conditions and is robust to facial image variation caused by eyeglasses because it only requires simple facial features and not specific features such as eyes, lip corners, and facial contours. Second, an ellipsoidal face model is proposed instead of a cylindrical face model to exactly determine a driver's yaw. Third, we propose new features-the normalized mean and the standard deviation of the horizontal edge projection histogram-to reliably and rapidly estimate a driver's pitch. Fourth, the proposed method obtains an accurate gaze zone by using a support vector machine. Experimental results from 200 000 images showed that the root mean square errors of the estimated yaw and pitch angles are below 7 under both daylight and nighttime conditions. Equivalent results were obtained for drivers with glasses or sunglasses, and 18 gaze zones were accurately estimated using the proposed gaze estimation method.
