Before and after conducting the health promotion program by group occupational health service during 5 years, we surveyed knowledge, attitude and practice about general health (30 items) and occupational health(30 items) among 25 small and medium scale industry workers(before: 355 workers, after: 279 workers) for evaluation of effectiveness. The scores of knowledge for smoking, drinking, cholesterol, mental stress, management of hypertension, and risks in younger or women workers were significantly increased after conducting group occupational health service. The scores of attitude for controlling of fatty food consumption and cleaning workplace and bathing for health and that of practice for taking the periodic health examination and checking blood pressure were significantly increased but most of items in attitude and practice didn't be changed after services. According to sex, the scores of men were significantly increased in knowledge of general health, but there were not significant differences in age, job status and work duration group. In conclusion, through the group occupational health service during 5 years, only the scores of knowledge in general health were increased. It suggested that the effective program which can change workers' attitude and practice for health promotion, should be developed and conducted in small and medium scale industry workers.

Before conducting the health promotion program, we surveyed the health risk appraisal(HRA) of 210 workers (186 men and 24 women) in a computer company, for the need assessment, selection of target population, priority setting, and as a standard for comparision after performing the program. The smokers were 115(88.6%), and drinkers (over 1 bottle of Soju per week) were 91(44.8%) in men. Entire women and 148(78.0%) men never or irregularly exercise. Type A personality were 73(39.2%) in men, 8(33.3%) in women, and 26(14.0%) of men and 6(25.0%) of women were high stress risk group. 53(25.2%) of men and 2(8.3%) of women were obese (BMI ≥25kg/m²), and workers who consumed exess of total calory compared with recommendation were 142(76.3%) in men and 18(75%) of women. By the health risk appraisal, it was suggested that smoking cessation program, drinking counselling, exercise prescription, stress management, and weight control program should be conducted effectively for the high risk group.
근로자 건강증진전략을 위한 행동변화에 대한 요구도 평가

Objectives : In order to evaluate the stage of behavior change for health promotion strategy in workplace Methods : Questionnaire survey was carried out for 309 workers who employed in H Electronics company in Kyong-in area from September to October 1998. Results : According to need assessment of four step such as precontemplation stage, contemplation stage, action stage, maintenance stage which were to change of behavior for health promotion, the percent for quitting smoking were observed 48.8%, 43.1%, 8.1%, 0%, and for the restriction of drinking were 29.8%, 10.6%, 9.3%, 5.3%; for fitness 11.1%, 31.0%, 37.3%, 20.6% in male 26.6%, 27.8%, 26.6%, 19.0% in female, for regular diet 26.1%, 19.8%, 38.7%, 15.3% in male, 27.8%, 22.2%, 40.0%, 10.0% in female and for stress management 5.8%, 10.6%, 8.7%, 75.0% in male, 13.6%, 22.7%, 19.7%, 44.0% in female. In heavy smoker(p=0.017) and heavy drinker,(p=0.021) the percent of precontemplation stage was significantly higher than in lower drinker and light smoker. Conclusions : This study suggested that company support for health promotion in workplace was and workers of high risk group for smoking and drinking were in precontemplation stage. So before conducting the health promotion program, health risk appraisal and need assessment for stage of behavior change should be taken for the efficient health promotion strategy.

Caenorhabditis elegans him-6 mutants, which show a high incidence of males and partial embryonic lethality, are defective in the orthologue of human Bloom’s syndrome protein (BLM). When strain him-6(e1104) containing a missense him-6 mutation was irradiated with γ-rays during germ cell development or embryogenesis, embryonic lethality was higher than in the wild type, suggesting a critical function of the wild type gene in mitotic and pachytene stage germ cells as well as in early embryos. Even in the absence of γ- irradiation, apoptosis was elevated in the germ cells of the him-6 strain and this increase was dependent on a functional p53 homologue (CEP-1), suggesting that spontaneous DNA damage accumulates due to him-6 deficiency. However, induction of germline apoptosis by ionizing radiation was not significantly affected by the deficiency, indicating that HIM-6 has no role in the induction of apoptosis by exogenous DNA damage. We conclude that the C. elegans BLM orthologue is involved in DNA repair in promeiotic cells undergoing homologous recombination, as well as in actively dividing germline and somatic cells.
Developmental Regulation of Caenorhabditis elegans DNA Topoisomerase I Expression

The developmental regulation of Caenorhabditis elegans DNA topoisomerase I expression was examined using synchronized Caenorhabditis elegans cultures. Variations of te relative mRNA and protein levels of the enzyme during their development were measured by Northern and Western analyses, respectively. The mRNA level was the highest at the embryonic stage, decreasing rapidly to the one tenth level at the L1 state, and then increasing by a few fold at the L4 and young adult stages. The protein level was the highest at the L1 stage, with gradual decreasing at the following stages until it showed a slight increase at the young adult stage. Based on our results of the expressional regulation, the possible roles of DNA topoisomerase I in the development of C. elegans are discussed.

The Transport Phenomena of a Series of Amides through the Copolymer Hydrogel Membranes

Hydrogel membranes were prepared by copolymerizing 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone (VP) in the presence of the solvent and the crosslinker tetraethyleneglycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA). By changing the monomer composition and the crosslinker content, different membranes were synthesized. Using these membranes, relative permeabilities and distribution coefficients for amides including urea were measured. The water contents in membrane were also measured. On the basis of solute-membrane matrix interaction, the results were interpreted.
Helical Periodicity of (dT)nㆍ(dA)nㆍ(dT)n Triple-Stranded DNA

The helical periodicity of the triple-stranded (dT)n·(dA)n·(dT)n sequence was determined by measuring gel-mobilities of bent DNA fragments containing the sequence. In the bent DNA fragments, a GA22G·CT22C sequence was located between two bent DNA loci composed of six An·Tn repeats, and the DNA length between the bent DNA loci was varied by 1 base pair over a full helical turn. The gel mobility of each bent DNA fragment reflected the overall extent of DNA bending and varied with the DNA length between the two bent loci. Mobilities of the bent DNA fragments in 5% polyacrylamide gel were measured after preincubating the DNA fragments both in the presence and absence of CT22C oligonucleotide. By comparing the bent DNA fragments containing an intermolecular triplex structure with those of a genuine duplex structure in the gel mobilities, the helical periodicity of the Tn·An·Tn triplex DNA was determined to be 11.5 (±0.3) bp/turn.
