Desmoplastic ameloblastoma is a rare histologic variant of ameloblastoma. It shows important differences in anatomic distribution, histologic appearance, and radiographic findings compared with the general type of ameloblastoma. It is histologically characterized by an abundance of densely collagenous stroma and radiographically a mixed radiolucent-radiopaque lesion. We present three cases of desmoplastic ameloblastoma. All the patients complained on buccal swelling with or without pain and the sites of occurrence were the anterior and the premolar region. Plain radiographs showed mixed radiopaque-radiolucent lesion with ill-defined or diffuse sclerotic margin and no external root resorption. Additionally, CT scans revealed buccal expansion and relatively well-defined margin of the lesions. The clinical and radiographic features of the presented cases were compared with those of the desmoplastic ameloblastoma in the previous literatures. (Korean J Oral Maxillofac Radiol 2006; 36 : 63-8)

광범위 유두근 석회화는 흔하지 앉으며, 원인과 임상적 중요성에 관한 문헌만 드물게 찾아볼 수 있다. 반면에 작은 석회 침착은 노인에서 흔하며 심장 첨부에 주로 나타난다. 유두근 석회화는 관상동맥질환, 확장성 심근병증, 승모관 질환, 고칼슘혈증, 그리고 말기신부전에서 인산칼슘의 중가와 연관성이 있다. 저자는 심장초옴파와 MDCT를 통해 진단된 전외측 유두근의 광범위 석회화의 드문 사례가 있어 보고한다.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Bacterial pathogens of water origin have potential public threats thus suggesting the need of developing efficient and sustainable water disinfection strategies from waterborne pathogens. We set out to synthesize different controlled morphologies of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C<SUB>3</SUB>N<SUB>4</SUB>) polymer, evaluate their comparative effects on the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and investigate potential applications in water purification systems. Characterization of the synthesized microstructures of g-C<SUB>3</SUB>N<SUB>4</SUB>, such as melamine-cyanuric acid (MCA)-based rosette-type, rod-type, 2D hexagonal, and 3D cubic mesoporous silica was accomplished using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The microbial inhibitory potential of 2D g-C<SUB>3</SUB>N<SUB>4</SUB> photocatalyst against waterborne <I>Escherichia coli</I>, <I>Staphylococcus aureus</I>, and <I>Salmonella typhimurium</I> was evaluated based on the effective activity of 2D g-C<SUB>3</SUB>N<SUB>4</SUB> upon visible light excitations. The microbicidal efficiency of 2D g-C<SUB>3</SUB>N<SUB>4</SUB> was evident within 30 min of visible light exposure via direct interaction, while other microstructures of g-C<SUB>3</SUB>N<SUB>4</SUB> demonstrated only slight antimicrobial effects after 120 min, with insufficient ROS generation. The antimicrobial and ROS-generating effects of 2D g-C<SUB>3</SUB>N<SUB>4</SUB> depended on the type and surface area of the synthesized 2D g-C<SUB>3</SUB>N<SUB>4</SUB> material. Considering its availability and excellent disinfection activity, 2D g-C<SUB>3</SUB>N<SUB>4</SUB> obtained from simple and convenient facile synthesis is a promising solar-driven photocatalyst for clearing microbial contamination from water.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Waterborne pathogenic bacteria pose significant health risks to the public. </LI> <LI> We synthesized different morphologies of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C<SUB>3</SUB>N<SUB>4</SUB>) polymer. </LI> <LI> Synthesized microstructures of g-C<SUB>3</SUB>N<SUB>4</SUB> had potential effect on ROS generation. </LI> <LI> 2D hexagonal g-C<SUB>3</SUB>N<SUB>4</SUB> exhibited significant antimicrobial potential. </LI> <LI> 2D g-C<SUB>3</SUB>N<SUB>4</SUB> had photocatalytic inactivation efficiency in a water purifying system. </LI> </UL> </P>

This study was investigated to evaluate a protective effect of ethyl acetate fraction from Cedrela sinensis (EFCS) on H₂O₂ and corticosterone-induced oxidative stress in hippocampal HT22 and human neuroblastoma MC-IXC cells. 40% ethanolic extracts of Cedrela sinensis showed higher total phenolic and total flavonoid contents than other ethanolic extracts. The EFCS showed the significant, 2,2"-azino-bis (3-ethyl benzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activities. The EFCS presented significant antioxidant capacity by evaluating the ferric reducing/antioxidant power (FRAP). The EFCS showed considerable inhibitory effect of malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity. In addition, the EFCS inhibited ROS production and increased cell viability in H₂O₂ and corticosterone-induced cytotoxicity in HT22 and MC-IXC cells. Main physiologically compounds of EFCS were identified as rutin, isoquercetin, ethyl gallate, quercetin, kampferol-3-O-rhamnose and ethyl digallate using ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time of flight/mass spectrometer (UPLC-QTOF/MS).

In this study, the improvement effect of Korean red pine (Pinus densiflora) bark extract (PineXol<SUP>®</SUP>) against the behavioral dysfunction and neurotoxicity in amyloid beta (Aβ)1-42-induced ICR mice was confirmed. Consumption of PineXol<SUP>®</SUP> improved learning and memory dysfunctions compared to the Aβ group by evaluating the Y-maze, passive avoidance and Morris water maze tests. The PineXol<SUP>®</SUP> regulated acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity, acetylcholine (ACh) content and expression of choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) and AChE related to a cholinergic system. In addition, the PineXol<SUP>®</SUP> restored antioxidant defisit by regulating the malondialdehyde (MDA) and reduced glutathione (GSH) levels in mouse brain tissue. Furthermore, PineXo<SUP>l®</SUP> significantly improved mitochondrial activity by ameliorating the mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) and mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) level.

In this study, anti-inflammatory effect of the ethyl acetate fraction of Eucommia ulmoides leaves (EFEL) on particulate matter (PM)2.5-induced intestinal damage mice model was evaluated. The EFEL showed a cytoprotective effect against PM2.5-induced cell death in HT29 cells. The EFEL ameliorated reduced glutathione (GSH) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) level in intestinal tissue. In addition, EFEL inhibited the intestinal malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. Furthermore, myelin peroxidase (MPO) level using the marker of intestinal inflammation was decreased in the EFEL group. Furthermore, the inflammatory cytokines such as (IL-1β, TNF-α and p-IκB-α) levels were decreased in the EFEL group. Also, intake of EFEL protected the tight junction proteins such as occluding and claudin-1 on PM2.5-induced intestine damage mice.
당 침지액 농도에 따른 건조 둥근 마의 품질 특성 및 항산화 효과

This study was investigated the quality characteristics and antioxidant of dried Dioscorea bulbifera with various pre-soaking concentrations of oligosaccharide. Dioscorea bulbifera are prepared by additions of 0, 4, 6, 8 and 10% oligosaccharide solution, and dried at 50℃. The effects of pre-soaking percent of Dioscorea bulbifera slices were evaluated by the moisture, soluble solid, pH, titratable acidity, color, browning degree, texture, antioxidant activities and sensory test. According to the percent of pre-soaking oligosaccharide solution was increased, the moisture was increased but soluble solids and titratable acidity were decreased. With respect to the result of colors, Dioscorea bulbifera slices that underwent the 10% pre-soaked process (85.86%) were lighter than control (73.88%). However, the redness and yellowness scores were the lowest than control. The springiness and cohesiveness of texture showed no significant differences among all groups. Gumminess and chewiness of texture results were increased according to per-soaking concentration increase. Also the polyphenol, flavonoid and DPPH (α, α-diphenyl-β-picrylhydrazyl) and ABTS [2,2’-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)] radical scavenging activities were significantly increased with increasing immersion concentration. The Dioscorea bulbifera slices supplemented with 6% pre-soaking oligosaccharide solution treatment showed the highest total sensory score. The results of our study indicated that when pre-soaking oligosaccharide solution is used to immerse the Dioscorea bulbifera slice, it has browning inhibition and antioxidant effect.
