        The Disclosure-Culture Model:Is Investor Protection Relevant in the Banking Industry?

        This paper investigates the significance of investor protection to Hooi’s (2007) banking disclosure-culture model. Seventeen developed and developing countries with a representative sample of 37 listed domestic commercial banks were examined in 2004. A significant finding for national culture is that individualism not uncertainty avoidance has been found as the primary cultural dimension for banking disclosures. Investor protection is found to improve the banking disclosure-culture model in terms of common law and anti-director rights.

        최근 많은 관심을 집중시키고 있는 광전자재료용 고분자의 제조를 위해 많은 연구가 진행되고 있다. 광전자재료용 고분자를 연구하는데 있어서 특수한 기능성을 갖는 monomer의 합성이 필수적이며, 이번에 본 연구그룹에서 합성한 porphyrin은 최근 많은 주목을 받고 있으나 고분자로 도입하는 합성방법에 있어 2 관능성을 갖게 만드는데 어려움이 있고 가격이 상당히 비싸 고분자를 전공하는 사람들이 이것을 이용하는데 많은 어려움을 가지고 있었다. 금번 본 연구그룹에서 합성한 방법은 고분자에 쉽게 적용할 수 있는 형태의 porphyrin을 합성하는 방법이고 이것을 ??, UV, GC-MASS 등을 통하여 확인하였으며, 이것을 이용하여 고분자를 중합하고 특수한 기능성을 부여한 신고분자의 합성을 목표로 하고 있다. There have been many researches on the preparation of photonic-electronic polymers. For the preparation of them it is necessary to synthesize materials that have special functionalities. Porphyrins that we synthesized are taken much attention from polymer chemists. But the method of synthesizing porphyrin is very difficult. For polymerization, every monomer has to have two functionalities. But having two functionalities on porphyrin needs high chemistry. It is expensive, too. Our group could synthesize this material with special method, which can be easily applied to polymer backbone. Porphyrin was charactrerized with ??, UV and GC-MASS. Our goal is making new polymers that can be applied to special functionalities-having polymers.

      • Metalloporphyrin으로 도핑된 폴리이미드의 광전사적 성질

        본 연구에서는 ZnTPP와 MgTPP를 도우핑한 폴리이미드의 과악적 성질을 UV spectrum과 emission spectrum을 이용하여 조사하였다. Tetraphenylporphyrin-zinc (ZnTPP)와 Tetraphenyl-porphyrin-magnesium (MgTPP)는 전하이동현상을 보였다. 폴리이미드와 폴피린관련 자외흡수피크에서 red-shift를 관찰할 수 있었다. 이는 폴리이미드의 이미드와 폴피린에 포함된 금속 물질과의 전하이동착체의 형성때문으로 설명할 수 있다. In this research, we fabricated metalloporphyrin doped polymides(PI) and characterized them with ultraviolet spectrophotometer and emission spectrophotometer. Tetraphenylporphyrin-zinc-doped and Tetraphenylporphyrin-magnesium-doped PIs showed charge transfer phenomena. Red-shift was obseved in polyimide and porphyrin related bands at the same time. This phenomena can be explained that charge transfer complex(CTC) formed between imide group of PI and metal in the porphyrin.

        Economic Integration in Asia: Quo Vadis Malaysia?

        Neo-liberal globalization has accelerated the space of economic integration in Asia, particularly between the rising superpowers like China and India and other Asian nations. In this connection, the paper examines the degree of economic integration between Malaysia and the rapidly developing economies of China and India on the one hand and the United States and Japan on the other. This study shows that Malaysia is more integrated with China and India than with the United States and Japan. It is not that global integration is becoming less significant in Malaysia but that regional integration is becoming more deterministic.

        Evaluating Perceived Quality of Traffic Information System using Structural Equation Modeling

        Megacities worldwide have been employing some form of traffic information systems to manage their road network and to mitigate congestion. However, the full benefits of such systems can only be achieved if drivers perceive the system to be of adequate quality for them to actually use the disseminated information in their travel choices. One way to evaluate the underlying quality of the system is to conduct questionnaire survey, gather direct driver feedback and perform statistical analyses to derive attributes or indicators such as driver awareness, utilization of traffic information and perceived effectiveness which are useful to agencies for their planning and management activities. However many past works have treated the attributes to be independent and did not offer a complete picture on the perceived quality of the traffic information system. This paper therefore presents the development of a holistic structural equation model that can consider all potential attributes affecting perceived quality in a single framework. Attributes considered in the paper include: driver awareness, driver utilization, perceived effectiveness, expectation, and perceived necessity of the system. Using the traffic information system in Klang Valley, Malaysia as a case study, it is demonstrated that there are causal and cross-loading relationships between the attributes contributing to perceived system quality and the attributes must be considered in a comprehensive manner. In addition, the model offers a useful interpretation on the factors affecting road user perception on the traffic information system, thereby allowing agencies to undertake appropriate measures to further improve the level of user satisfaction.

        Regional Identity and Belonging: Timor-Leste and ASEAN

        Emerging from Portuguese colonialism and Indonesian occupation to become one of the newest states, Timor-Leste is an interesting example of modern nation-building. Geographically, Timor-Leste is located in the area covered by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). In such context, Timor-Leste has a strong claim to belonging to Southeast Asia. Timor-Leste nevertheless has not yet been admitted formally as a member despite its application for membership in March 2011. This paper locates Timor-Leste in a broader context of their construction of regional identity and as part of Southeast Asia. Drawing upon the constructivist approach, this paper suggests that the complexity of Timor-Leste's regional affiliation with ASEAN is made more challenging with its quest to assert itself as a nation-in-the-making.

        Quantifying Impact of Traffic Images Applications (APPS) on Travel Choices

        The advent of smartphone technologies has caused revolution to the manner of dissemination of traffic information. Development of traffic image applications (apps) allows drivers to obtain updated traffic information by accessing Closed Circuit Television Camera (CCTV) images mounted along the roadways. This facilitates drivers to carry out pre-trip or en-route trip planning to avoid congestion while authorities manage travel demand more efficiently. Previous studies are mostly focused on quantifying driver perception of road congestion level based on the traffic images shown, but failed to scrutinize their responses. The manner in which traffic image applications (apps) could influence driver travel choices are yet to be established. This study is thus carried out to gratify the research gap by investigating drivers’ likeliness to change their travel choices by virtue of route, departure time, mode, and willingness to cancel a planned trip upon viewing the traffic conditions via apps. A questionnaire study is piloted to gather drivers’ opinion while fuzzy logic is adopted to model their responses. It was established that drivers are more sensitive to changes in density rather than speed and flow when perceiving traffic congestion levels. A new dynamic relationship of drivers’ travel choice and their perceived congestion levels is deduced. This relationship explains the type of travel plan changes the drivers are more likely to make under different traffic conditions, endorsing benefits in travel demand modeling as opposed to a single value outcome provided by most of the existing studies. The model reveals that drivers perceived only 3 levels of congestion, i.e., low, medium, and high congestion. They tend to change their departure time choice at medium perceived congestion level while the likeliness to change route increases when congestion level increases. Drivers cancel trips when they perceive heavy congestion but less likely to perform mode choice changes.
