Edible insects are considered novel protein sources, and the edible insect breeding industry is growing rapidly. However, fungal pathogens are a major threat to this industry, and appropriate identification of causative agents is important for the development of antifungal agents. In 2019, strains of the fungal pathogen Metarhizium were isolated from infected second and third instar larvae of the economically important edible insect Protaetia brevitarsis, which were collected from separate farms in Gimhae-si, Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea. Based on morphological characteristics and multilocus phylogenetic analysis of the internal transcribed spacer region, and 50-region of gene encoding the 1-α elongation factor, the fungal strains were identified as Metarhizium majus. Here, we report the detailed phylogenetic characteristics and morphological description of this species, which is prevalent in Korea. Identification of the principal disease-causing agent can help develop disease prevention and antifungal strategies for application in edible insect-rearing farms.

Sclerosing mucoepidermoid carcinoma with eosinophilia (SMECE) of the thyroid gland is a very rare carcinoma. We herein report on a case of SMECE with metastasis to bilateral lateral neck nodes, esophagus, and trachea. A 72-year-old woman presented with a neck mass found incidentally during a medical check-up. She had a history of cerebral stroke without sequelae 20 years ago and was taking aspirin regularly. The neck mass was confirmed as papillary thyroid carcinoma by fine needle aspiration biopsy. The patient underwent bilateral total thyroidectomy with central compartment and bilateral compartment lateral neck dissection. The right recurrent laryngeal nerve was sacrificed due to tumor invasion. The trachea wall and esophagus were also invaded by the cancer. Histologically, the tumor showed dense fibrohyaline stroma and a goblet cell, nested islands of squamoid cells, and marked stromal eosinophilia with perineural invasion and lymphovascular invasion, confirming the diagnosis of SMECE. After radiation therapy for three months, distant metastasis to the liver, lung, and bone were found on PET-CT. This case appears to be more aggressive than previously reported cases.
Effects of secondary tasks on brake time of taxi drivers during unexpected situation

Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the secondary tasks such as sending text message (STM) and searching navigation (SN) on brake time of taxi drivers when it happen unexpected situation during driving. Background: There are so many researches that driving performance of ordinary people was affected by cell phone conversations and watching TV. But there are no researches about driving performance of taxi drivers. Method: The participants included 15 taxi drivers; 7 males aged 57.7±4.2 with 28.0±7.5 years of driving experiences and 8 females aged 56.0±2.8 with 22.7±5.2 years of driving experiences. All subjects were instructed to keep a certain distance (30m) from the car ahead and a constant speed (80km/h or 100km/h). The brake time after unexpected situation was measured. Results: The brake time was more faster during driving only than the driving with secondary tasks. Driving performance was more affected by driving with searching navigation(SN) than sending text message(STM).

Background/Aim: The prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is affected by stage as well as liver function. We analyzed the outcome of early stage HCC in Child-Pugh class C patients and advanced HCC in Child-Pugh class A patients. Methods: Among 453 HCC patients, group I included consecutive 33 patients with early stage (I,II) in Child-Pugh class C and Group II included 45 consecutive patients with advanced stage (III, IV) in Child-Pugh class A. We compared clinical characteristics, complications of cirrhosis, overall survival between two groups. Results: Younger age, male, presence of HBV, α-fetoprotein (AFP) (>400ng/ml), and MELD score (<15) were significantly high in advanced stage HCC in Child-Pugh class A patients (Group II) (p<0.05). Complications of cirrhosis such as variceal hemorrhage, ascites, and hepatic encephalopathy were increased in the Group I (p<0.05). Median overall survival was 24.5 months (95% CI 10.6-38.4) for Group I and 13.5 months (95% CI 4.6-22.3) for Group II (p=0.281). AFP was an independent prognostic factor in early stage in Child-Pugh class C patients (Group I). MELD score and tumor stage were independent prognostic factors in advanced stage in Child-Pugh class A patients (Group II). Conclusion: Overall survival was not different between two groups. AFP was a prognostic factor in early stage in Child-Pugh class C patients (Group I), whereas MELD score and tumor stage were prognostic factors in advanced stage in Child-Pugh class A patients (Group II).

BmCu/Zn SOD was isolated from early embryo of Bombyx mori using microarray analysis. The BmCu/Zn SOD gene was observed during the early embryonic stage with the strongest signal found at the unfertilizaion, fertilization and blastoderm stages. The BmCu/Zn SOD gene encodes a protein of 154 amino acids with a calculated Mr of 15 kDa. The deduced amino acid sequence of BmCu/Zn SOD indicated that the residues that form on the Cu/Zn binding site are conserved and that the sequence is a 60% identity to that of M. domestica. In a phylogenetic tree, Bm SOD was also close to Drosophila SODs rather than other insect SODs. The BmCu/Zn SOD gene exists as a single copy in the genome. Transcripts of BmCu/Zn SOD cDNA were identified by northern blot analysis. The expression of the BmCu/Zn SOD gene was observed weakly in most of larvae, pre-pupae, pupae and adult tissues. Also, the BmCu/Zn SOD gene was observed in early embryonic stage. Although the roles of SODs remains to be further elucidated, the high expression of BmCu/Zn SOD gene at before 24 h post fertilization suggests that this gene is of general importance during early embryogenesis in the Bombyx mod.

The current study examined the effects of freeze-dried mulberry fruit on disaccharidase activity in the small intestine and the lowering of blood glucose in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Sprague-Dawley male rats were randomly assigned to one normal and three streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic groups. The diabetic groups were fed a mulberry fruit-free diet (DM-group), 0.3% mulberry fruit diet (DM-F group) or 0.6% mulberry fruit diet (DM-2F group). After they were fed the experimental diets for three weeks, diabetes was induced with an intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin 50 mg/kg b.w before sacrificing 9 days later using the same experimental treatments. Analyses of anthocyanins, flavonoid and 1-deoxynojirimycin (DNJ) of lyophilized mulberry fruit were carried out and the major anthocyanins were rutin (142.5 mg), isoquercitrin (10.3 mg), quercetin (5.8 mg), morin (1.6 mg) dihydroquercetin (3.83 mg), cy-3-O-glucopyranoside (230.45 mg) and cy-3-O-rutinoside (131.5 mg) on the basis of 100 g dry weight. Total DNJ content was 2.39 mg/g dry weight of lyophilized mulberry fruit. Blood glucose level decreased in the diabetic mts fed the mulberry fruit supplement. The content of the liver glycogen increased in the diabetic mts fed the mulberry fruit supplement. Disaccharidase activity in the proximal part of the intestine, such as that of maltase, sucrase and lactase in the mulberry fruit supplementation groups, were lower than that of the DM group. These results suggest that mulberry fruit possess a suppressive effect on hyperglycemia, possibly by inhibiting the activity of disaccharidase in the small intestine of rats.

The current study examined the effects of mulberry fruit on the antioxidative defense systems and oxidative stress in the erythrocytes of diabetes-induced rats. Sprague-Dawley male rats were randomly assigned to one normal and three streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic groups. 1be diabetic groups were fed a mulberry fruit-free diet (DM-group), 0.3% mulberry fruit diet (DM-F group) or 0.6% mulberry fruit diet (DM-2F group). Diabetes was induced with STZ after three weeks of the experimental diets. 1be rats were sacrificed 9 days later for examination of the antioxidative defense systems and oxidative stress in the erythrocytes. Means of cy-3-Ο-glucopyranoside, cy-3-Ο-rutinoside, rutin, isoquercitrin, quercetin, morin and dehydroquercetin contents were 230.45, 131.5, 142.5, 10.3, 5.8, 1.6 and 3.83mg per l00g dry weight, respectively, in the mulberry fruit. Mulberry fruit strengthened the antioxidative defense systems through increased activity of the antioxidant enzymes, such as glutathione peroxidase (GSH-px) and catalase (CAT), in the erythrocytes of the diabetes-induced rats. Accrdingly, mulberry fruit was found to reduce the accumulation of thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (WARS). Therefore, mulberry fruit was found to be excellent for strengthening the antioxidative defense system and reducing damaging oxidative substances in the erythrocytes of the diabetes-induced rats.
