Isolated ACTH deficiency is a rare cause of secondary adrenocortical insufficiency. Adrenal crisis in isolated ACTH deficiency is less common compared to primary adrenal insufficiency, but isolated ACTH deficiency is an important cause of hypoglycemia. Recently we experienced a 41-year-old man admitted because of mental confusion. On admission, plasma glucose and sodium concentration were 1.7, 132 mmol/L, respectively. Basal plasma ACTH and cortisol levels were low and other pituitary hormone showed normal response to combined pituitary stimulation test except growth hormone. Plasma ACTH concentration remained low even after intravenous injection of ovine corticotropin releasing factor. It suggest that the defect of ACTH secretion was apparently due to intrinsic pituitary rather than hypothalamic disease. The sellar CT showed the fossa to be filled by cerebrospinal fluid. After treatment with glucocorticoid, he had no further evidence of hypoglycemia and hyponatremia. In conclusion, we report a case of isolated ACTH deficiency with empty sella. Properties of Starches in Chinese Yam, Dioscorea oppsita Thunb. Irradiated with Proton Beam

The survival rate and thermal, crystal, and physicochemical properties of starches in chinese yam tubers irradiated to proton beam were determined. Survival rate was decreased with increased proton beam irradiation. Amylose content of D. opposita starches from different proton beam ranged from 13.2% to 17.8%. D. opposita starch at 5 Gy showed the highest ${\Delta}H_{gel}$ values (12.0 J/g) while D. opposita starch at 25 Gy showed the lowest values (10.1 J/g). Several parameters such as PKV (peak viscosity), HPV (Hot peak viscosity) and CPV (Cooling peak viscosity) decreased with the increase in irradiation dose. The degrees of crystallinity of the D. opposita starches at 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 Gy were 37.2, 38.3, 38.9, 39.2 and 39.9%, respectively. It might be deduced that proton beam irradiation causes changes of starch, especially at high dose irradiation.

The study was carried out to evaluate the affect of proton beam radiation on production of bulbil and tuber including change of endogenous gibberellins, of Dioscorea opposita Thunb. The yield of bulbils and tubers from non- and irradiated D. opposita Thunb at doses of 5, 10, 15 and 20 Gy were determined. Endogenous gibberellins were also quantified by GC/MS analysis. D. opposita tubers irradiated at 15 Gy produced higher bulbil production than non-irradiated plants. Enlarged bulbil (above size diameter 4 mm) was significantly increased at 15 Gy. Bioactive endogenous $GA_4$ was dominant in bulbils and tubers irradiated with proton beam rather than $GA_1$. Major gibberellins biosynthetic pathways in bulbils and tubers of D. opposita plants were non C-13 hydroxylation route. From the results of this study, 15 Gy proton beam radiation was suggested as an optimal dose that can produce high amounts of bulbil for mass production of D. opposita plant.

We describe here a facile transformation procedure of root explants of Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh. The important features of our procedure are; 1) introduction of a direct shooting media of a single phytohormone combination of 2 ㎎/ℓ benzylaminopurine (BAP) and 0.2 ㎎/ℓ of indole acetic acid (IAA) for conditioning of root explants, for cocultivation with Agrobacteria and for shoot regeneration, and 2) liquid culture of plants in Murashige and Skoog's medium supplemented with 1% sucrose for ewer collection of root material, and 3) use of 2 week-old root material When applied to two Arabidopsis ecotypes La-0 and WS-0, our procedure generated transformed shoots within 2 weeks after cocultivation (or 5 weeks from sowing) with a transformation efficiency of 33%.

Background and ObjectivesThe use of ballistic movements during resistance exercises can improve the efficiency of force and change the momentum and muscle activity due to the selective mobilization of the motor unit. This study was conducted to analyze the number of repetitions, exercise time, and body muscle activity during traditional resistance and ballistic resistance exercises.Materials and MethodsEight males in their 20s were selected as the study subjects and two exercise types (non-ballistic, ballistic) were performed. The following results were obtained by measuring the number of repetitions, exercise time, and the electromyography (EMG) response during exercise.ResultsFirst, there was a statistically significant difference in the number of repetitions with the ballistic movement during the standing shoulder press (p = .037). Second, there was a statistically significant difference in the exercise time with the ballistic movement during the standing shoulder press (p= .042). Third, there was a statistically significant difference in the erector spinae (p = .002), rectus femoris (p = .001), gastrocnemius (p = .012) activity with the ballistic movement during the standing shoulder press.ConclusionIt was confirmed that muscle activity and power output could be changed with the use of ballistic movements.
진행성 비소세포 폐암에 대한 5 - Fluorouracil , Vinblastine 과 Cisplatin ( FVP ) 의 복합화학요법

The 5 year survival rate after surgical resection for stage III non-small cell lung cancer(NSCLC) remains short, only 10-19%. Radiotherapy seems to show some benefit for local control, but it does not reflect to prolongation of survival, as distant metastasis prevails. Vinblastine is one of the most active agent against NSCLC. 5-Fluorouracil(5-FU) and cisplatin are synergistic in anti-cancer activity in adenocarcinoma of gastrointestinal tract and squamous cell cancer of head and neck. We initiated a phase II trial for advanced NSCLC to determine the effect of FVP regimen in response rate, survival and toxicities. The therapy consisted of 5-FU 500mg/m2/12 hours continious IV infusion for 36 hours from day 1, vinblastine 3mg/m2 IV bolus day 1 and 2, cisplatin 75mg/m2 IV infusion over 2 hours day 1 and it was repeated every 3 weeks. Among the 45 patients entered into this study, 40 patients were evaluable for response. The objective response rate was 50%(CR;1/40, 2.5% PRi19/40, 47.5%). The median survival of all the patients was 42.9 weeks(8.4+ - 140.6 weeks); the responding patients survived longer than the non-responders(mediansurvival; 54.4 weeks vs 29.7 weeks, p<0.05). The toxicities of this regimen were acceptable but 1 patient died of pneumonia associated with granulocytopenia. We concluded that the FVP regimen is effective in the treatment of advanced non-small cell lung cancer and a prospective randomized trial and long- term follow up is warranted.
