Benzalkonium chloride (BAC) intoxication causes fatal lung injuries, such as acute lung injury (ALI) and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). However, the pathogenesis of ALI/ARDS induced by BAC ingestion is poorly understood. This study aimed to clarify the mechanism of lung toxicity after BAC ingestion in a mouse model. BAC was orally administered to C57BL/6 mice at doses of 100, 250, and 1250 mg/kg. After administration, BAC concentrations in the blood and lungs were evaluated via liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry. Lung tissue injury was evaluated via histological and protein analyses. Blood and lung BAC concentration levels after oral administration increased in a dose-dependent manner, with the concentrations directly proportional to the dose administered. The severity of lung injury worsened over time after the oral administration of 1250 mg/kg BAC. An increase in the terminal transferase dUTP nick end labeling-positive cells and cleaved caspase-3 levels was observed in the lungs after 1250 mg/kg BAC administration. In addition, increased cleaved caspase-9 levels and mitochondrial cytochrome c release into the cytosol were observed. These results suggest that lung tissue injury with excessive apoptosis contributes to BAC-induced ALI development and exacerbation. Our findings provide useful information for developing an effective treatment for ALI/ARDS induced by BAC ingestion.

Mathematical laws in the walking of human beings are experimentally investigated using inexpensive GPS receivers. Subjects with their eyes blindfolded and ears stoppled are asked to walk straight on a wide playground. Then, the subjects behave like random walkers. How do the subjects walk? When persons move in whiteout, such as in snowy mountains veiled in dense fog or mist, they are often reported to wander along ring-like orbits and return near the start point. Similar ring-wandering phenomena are produced by a controlled eld experiment. The ring-wandering tendency in an old person is found to be stronger than that in a young person. The time series X(t) and Y (t) of the walking trajectories in a Descartes X-Y coordinate system set up on the playground are studied using a Hurst R/S analysis and a power spectrum analysis. Both the time series have a 1=f characteristic in the frequency region 10 mHz . f . 500 mHz, where is a numerical factor of order 1 and depends on each person. For frequencies less than the lower bound, peaks relating to ring-wandering walks are observed. The upper bound frequency of 500 mHz is not a characteristic of walking, but a limit due to the performance of the GPS receivers used in this experiment, which output position data every second. The R/S analysis of the time series X(t) and Y (t) shows that the Hurst exponent H is independent of any walker and any walking and that H is almost equal to one.

3.0-mm-thick a- and b-axis-oriented (Bi_(3.25)Nd_(0.75))Ti_3O_(12) (BNT-0.75) films were fabricated on conductive Nb:TiO_2(101) (Nb = 0, 0.048, 0.46, 0.79 mass%) single crystal substrates by high-temperature sputtering. A BNT films grown on undoped TiO_2 substrates have no orientation, whereas BNT films deposited on Nb:TiO_2 substrates with 0.46-0.79 mass% Nb show strong (h00/0k0) diffractions and grow with a heteroepitaxial relationship to the underlying Nb:TiO_2 substrates. The BNT-0.75 film deposited on Nb:TiO_2(101) substrate with 0.79 mass% Nb was indicated the peculiar shape of approximately 100-150-nm-thick nanoplates. We speculate that the driving force for producing a plate-like structure for BNT films is attributed to the large anisotropy of linear expansion coefficients for Bi_4Ti_3O12, and the comparatively small lattice matching between Nb:TiO_2 substrate and BNT film.
