Purpose: This study was done to identify the degree that perceived social support effects the self esteem of the elderly. Method: A structured questionnaire was administered to 203 elderly subjects from April 2003 to June 2003. The data were analyzed with an SPSS program for descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficients. t-test, ANOVA, and stepwise multiple regression. Result: The level of social support was moderate; family support received the highest score among sources of support. In types of support, appraisal support was the highest score and material was the lowest. The level of self esteem was also moderate. The score of social support showed a slightly high positive correlation with self esteem. In general characteristics, several variables were significantly related to self esteem. The most powerful predictor of self esteem was material support by family and the variance explained was 19.6%. A combination of material support by family, informational support by relatives, perceived economic status, perceived health status, and having a subject to depend on accounted for 39.8% of the variance in self esteem of the elderly. Conclusion: To increase the self esteem of the elderly, it is necessary to consolidate material support by family.

Purpose: This study aimed to assess needs of training programs for APN practice courses and continuing education programs for APNs to provide baseline data to improve APN education and practice. Methods: A total of 98 questionnaires were distributed to professors in 38 nursing institutions and 64 (65.3%) were returned. Data collection was performed in November and December, 2007 through email. Results: Professors in charge of geriatric and home care nurse practitioner programs constituted 43.7% of the study participants. Forty-one percent answered that they were satisfied with the practice programs they currently have operated, while 36.5% responded to have difficulty in appointment of institutions for practice programs and 56.3% had problems in assignment of preceptorship. In case of developing training programs for APN practice courses, 58.7% answered that they are willing to participate, and 90.6% felt needs for development of continuing education programs for APNs. Regarding liability insurance for APN students, only 11.5% provided insurance policy. Conclusion: The study results indicated that standardized training programs are needed to assure quality of APN education, and continuing education programs are required to provide opportunities for APNs to improve competencies.
Synthesis and characterization of β-carotene-loaded albumin nanoparticles by high-speed homogenizer

β-Carotene (BC) is a strong antioxidant, but its therapeutic application has been limited by its poor aqueous solubility. Protein-based nanoparticles (NPs) have been used to increase the aqueous solubility of hydrophobic drugs. In this study, bovine serum albumin (BSA) was used to prepare NPs to encapsulate BC using a high-speed homogenizer. After homogenization, BC-BSA-NPs were formed and the encapsulated BC was dissolved in phosphate-buffered saline at pH 7.4. Various characterization methods, including dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, and spectrophotometry, indicated that BCBSA- NPs were spherical with an average size of 112 nm and encapsulated BC with high efficiency. BC encapsulated in NPs was stable during the preparation process and was continuously released in PBS at 37 C for 3 days. The 2,2- diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl and ferric reducing antioxidant power assays demonstrated good antioxidant activity of BC-BSA-NPs. These results suggest that BSA-NPs are a promising nanocarrier for the delivery of BC.

Analysis on Antioxidant Activity of the New Developed Waxy Corn Hybrids

A total of CNU 28 colored hybrids developed at the Chungnam National University were evaluated to identify new cultivars with functionality. These color waxy corn hybrids appeared to have high antioxidant activity. The SOD activity in the developed color waxy corn was high; CNU13H-3, in white hybrid, and CNU13H-44, in yellow hybrid, was 5% and 27% higher than the Yeonnong and Daehakchal Gold 1 of control hybrids, respectively. The DPPH activity in CNU13H-44, of yellow hybrid, and CNU13H-75 of purple hybrid were high as 32.6 mg/g and 40.1 mg/g, respectively. We have already reported that color hybrids have high antioxidant activity. In this study also was same results. On the basis of our findings, these hybrids will be planted in next time to compare their productivity and area adaptation.
