The purpose of this study is to examine students’ perspectives on two online learning formats: pre-recorded video lectures versus video-conferencing. There were 90 participants who took College English courses in a university in Seoul. Participants took TOEIC tests before taking the classes and were divided into two different proficiency level groups: a high-level group and a low-level group. All participants studied English via both pre-recorded video lectures and video-conferencing (Zoom) for the whole semester. Questionnaires were carried out to explore students’ perspectives on both online formats in accordance with their proficiency levels. The findings of the closed-ended questionnaires revealed that significant differences were not found between the low- and high-level groups regardless of the online learning formats. Regarding students’ perspectives about these online English formats, a statistical difference was not found between the two groups. It is worth noting that students did not show any significantly different perspectives concerning online courses regardless of their proficiency levels. As for the open-ended questionnaires, both groups noted various benefits and drawbacks of the current online learning platforms. Also, they provided constructive suggestions for these online learning formats. The results of this study have pedagogical implications for carrying out successful online courses.

Purpose: This study was to identify the relationship between depression and spiritual health in patients suffering from women cancers. Methods: The research method was a cross-sectional descriptive study. Data was collected by questionnaires from 106 in woman patients who were diagnosed with women cancer at one university hospitals and one general hospital. The instruments used for this study included, the Depression Scale developed by Zung(1965) and Spirituality Health Inventory developed by Highfieid(1992) and amended by Lee & Kim. The collected data were analyzed using Frequency, Percentage, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson s correlation coefficients. Results: 1) Depression score was middle, Spiritual Health score was middle 2) The Spiritual Health in women cancer patients indicated a significant negative correlation between spiritual health and depression was perceived with over moderate level(r=-.647, p=.000) 3) There were significant difference in spiritual health according to the Monthly income (F=4.30, p= .016), the degree of pain(F= 2.848,p= .041), the degree of fatigue(F= 3.415,p=.020),the frequency of attendance at worship services(F=3.285, p=.014) the effect of religion on personal life(F= 9.413, p=.000). 4) There were significant difference in depression, according to the residence type(F= .748, p=.012), the cancer insurance(t=7.859, p=.006), the degree of pain(F= 2.775,p= .045). Conclusions: It is needed strategies for intervention of improving the spiritual health to reduce depression in women cancer patients. The significant several characteristics of related to depression and spiritual health should consider in sociopsychological nursing intervention of women cancer patients

Phosphoinositide-specific phospholipase Cδ (PLCδ) plays an important role in many cellular responses and is involved in the production of second messenger. The present study was conducted to characterize the catalytic and regulatory properties of the PLCδ of Misgurnus mizolepis (ML-PLCδ). The ML-PLCδ gene was cloned and expressed under according to the method of the previous report (Kim et al., 2004), and its recombinant protein was purified by successive chromatography using Ni2+-NTA affinity column. The recombinant ML-PLCδ showed a concentration-dependent PLC activity to phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate (PIP2) or phosphatidylinositol (PI). Its activity was absolutely Ca2+-dependence, which was similar to mammalian PLCδ isozymes. The Ca2+ concentration yielding maximal activation of ML-PLCδ was 100 μM. However, the activity was decreased interestingly by a polyamine, such as spermine and spermidine. In vitro assay using cholate-micelle cell, ML-PLCδ activity was inhibited in dose-dependent manner by sphinogosine but increased by phosphocholine . In the lipid-binding assay, ML-PLCδ was strongly bound to LPA, PI(3)P, PI(4)P, PI(5)P, PI(3,5)P2, PI(4,5)P2, PI(3,4,5)P3 and PA, but it showed the low affinity to S1P, PI(3,4)P2 and PS. Taken together our results, it is suggested that the general catalytic and regulatory properties of ML-PLCδ are similar with those of mammalian PLCδ1 isozymes, but the N-terminal extended piscine phospholipase Cδ1 (ML-PLCδ) might reflect some distinctions in regulatory properties and inositol-lipid binding specificity between piscine ML-PLCδ and mammalian PLCδ isozymes.
Future English Learning: Chatbots and Artificial Intelligence
( Na-young Kim ),( Yoonjung Cha ),( Hea-suk Kim ) 한국멀티미디어언어교육학회 2019 멀티미디어 언어교육 Vol.22 No.3
Advancements in robotic research have enabled robots to assist humans in many ways. Chatbots have been considered useful in many areas and research has increasingly focused on applying this technology to language education. The purpose of this study is to report on and review different types of intelligent chatbots in terms of language learning. The findings reveal that there are few chatbot programs that allow for direct interaction between chatbots and humans through voice recognition systems or texting for the purpose of learning foreign languages. Researchers have investigated the limited use of AI in education fields, including chatbot applications aimed at improving English teaching and learning. Based on their empirical studies, chatbots have proven to have some positive effects on students’ communication skills largely by their effect on expanding the quantity of their interactions, meaning negotiation, increasing their motivation, and on raising their interest in learning. Thus, this study proposes that chatbots can enrich language inputs and bring opportunities for language learners to raise communicative competence. More studies should be conducted to develop chatbots for learning foreign languages. Based on the findings of this study, suggestions for future research directions concerning chatbots in the realm of language education are presented, and further pedagogical implications are discussed.

The aim of this study was to focus on describing how different learning platforms (traditional and Metaverse) may influence learners’ English proficiency. To investigate whether the experience of a Metaverse environment can be favorable for speaking practice, forty-five students were divided into two groups: traditional and Metaverse. During the semester, students in the traditional group practiced speaking English in offline classrooms, while those in the Metaverse group exercised speaking English in a Metaverse environment. According to the findings, both groups significantly improved their English proficiency within the group, but there were no significant differences between the two groups. In terms of students’ perspectives, the advantages and disadvantages of the Metaverse learning platform shed light on how they perceived using it for learning English speaking. The results of this study also suggest pedagogical implications and insights for future research.

A 74-year-old woman complained of dysphagia and hemoptysis after ingesting a fragment of crab shell while eating crab saltedfermented fish products, and presented dyspnea that had lasted for three days. Computed tomography indicated pneumomediastinum. Laboratory results revealed acute renal failure. The patient experienced respiratory distress and shock over the days following her initial presentation. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed black pigmentation of the esophageal mucosa from the middle to lower esophagus. Despite intensive care, the patient’s condition deteriorated and she died. This is the first case of acute esophageal necrosis associated with esophageal foreign body injury and the development of pneumomediastinum reported in Korea.
