ObjectiveaaAlterations of activity are prominent features of the major functional psychiatric disorders. Motor activity patterns are characterized by bursts of activity separated by periods with inactivity. The purpose of the present study has been to analyze such active and inactive periods in patients with depression and schizophrenia. MethodsaaActigraph registrations for 12 days from 24 patients with schizophrenia, 23 with depression and 29 healthy controls. ResultsaaPatients with schizophrenia and depression have distinctly different profiles with regard to the characterization and distribution of active and inactive periods. The mean duration of active periods is lowest in the depressed patients, and the duration of inactive periods is highest in the patients with schizophrenia. For active periods the cumulative probability distribution, using lengths from 1 to 35 min, follows a straight line on a log-log plot, suggestive of a power law function, and a similar relationship is found for inactive periods, using lengths from 1 to 20 min. For both active and inactive periods the scaling exponent is higher in the depressed compared to the schizophrenic patients. ConclusionaaThe present findings add to previously published results, with other mathematical methods, suggesting there are important differences in control systems regulating motor behavior in these two major groups of psychiatric disorders.
Does Higher Datarate Perform Better in IEEE 802.11-based Multihop Ad Hoc Networks?

Due to the nature that high datarate leads to shorter transmission range, the performance enhancement by high datarate 802.11 WLANs may be degraded when applying high datarate to an 802.11 based multihop ad hoc network. In this paper, we evaluate, through extensive simulations, the performance of multihop ad hoc networks at multiple transmission datarates, in terms of the number of hops between source and destination, throughput, end-to-end delay and packet loss. The study is conducted based on both stationary chain topology and mesh topologies with or without node mobility. From numerical results on network performance based on chain topology, we conclude that there is almost no benefit by applying the highest datarate when the chain length is 6 hops or more. With node mobility in mesh topology, the benefit of using high datarate diminishes at even shorter number of hops. To explore the main reasons for this behavior, analyses on multihop end-to-end throughput and network k-connectivity have been conducted later in the paper, and correspondingly an auto-rate adaptation algorithm has been proposed.

We report on a new high-resolution optical spectroscopy, coherent phonon measurement, for determining the chiral index of carbon nanotubes. Using femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy, we demonstrate the real-time observation of lattice vibrations in individualized single-walled carbon nanotubes in an aqueous surfactant solution. Almost all available radial breathing modes in the Fourier transform spectrum from coherent phonon oscillations are well-resolved with less ambiguity in comparison to continuous-wave resonant Raman scattering.
