In myotonic dystrophy(MD), a characteristic myopathy is accompanied by abnormalities of other systems, including the brain. The pathogenesis of MD has not been clearly explained. Sometimes white matter lesion was noted on brain MRI, but its causative roles and association with intellectual impairment in MD was not clea yet. We report a case of myotonic dystrophy with intellectual impairment and temporal white matter lesions.

요골신경의 분지인 후골간 신경손상은 주로 요골골두 손상이나 골절에 의해 나타나며, 지방종, 결절종, 점액낭염, 섬유종 또는 류마티스양 활막염 등의 비 외상성 압박에 의해서도 발생할 수 있으나 특별한 원인 없이 자발적으로 발생하는 후골간 신경손상은 비교적 드물다. 저자들은 수면 후 발생한 좌 상지 근력저하를 주소로 내원하여 시행한 신경학적 검사와 전기 생리학적 검사에서 특별한 원인 없이 자발적으로 발생한 후골간 신경손상을 경험하였기에 문헌고찰과 함께 보고하는 바이다. Posterior interosseous nerve, deep muscular branch of radial nerve, can be compressed by tumor, ganglion, fibroma, bursitis, or rheumatoid synovitis. But, spontaneous posterior interosseous nerve neuropathy is relatively rare. We report a case of spontaneous, non-traumatic paralysis of the posterior interosseous nerve.

This paper presents an advanced torque ripple minimization method of a switched reluctance motor (SRM) using torque sharing function (TSF). Generally, TSF is applied into the torque control. However, the conventional TSF cannot follow the expected torque well because of the nonlinear characteristics of the SRM. Moreover, the tail current that is generated at a high speed motor drive makes unexpected torque ripples. The proposed method combined TSF with fuzzy logic control (FLC). The advantage of this method is that the torque can be controlled unity at any conditions. In addition, the controller can track the torque under the condition of the wrong TSF. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is verified by the simulations and experiments.
Ginsenoside Rg12, a new dammarane-type triterpene saponin from Panax ginseng root

Background: Panax ginseng has been used as Korean medicine for various diseases. It has antioxidant, hypotensive, sedative, analgesic, and endocrine activities. Dammarane-type triterpenes from the plant have various beneficial effects. Methods: A dammarane-type triterpene saponin was isolated from P. ginseng root through chromatography such as repeated column chromatography and medium pressure liquid chromatography. Results and conclusion: New dammarane-type triterpene saponin was isolated for the first time from nature. The structure was elucidated as ginsenoside Rg12 (1) based on spectral data. There may be good materials from P. ginseng for the development of industrial applications such as nutraceutical, pharmaceutical, and cosmeceutical purposes.

Background: The Panax ginseng plant is used as an herbal medicine. Phytosterols of P. ginseng have inhibitory effects on inflammation-related factors in HepG2 cells. Methods: Phytosterols (e.g., stigmasterol and ${\beta}$-sitosterol) in the roots of P. ginseng grown under various conditions were analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography. The P. ginseng roots analyzed in this study were collected from three cultivation areas in Korea (i.e., Geumsan, Yeongju, and Jinan) and differed by cultivation year (i.e., 4 years, 5 years, and 6 years) and production process (i.e., straight ginseng, red ginseng, and white ginseng). Results: The concentrations of stigmasterol and ${\beta}$-sitosterol in P. ginseng roots were 2.22-23.04 mg/g and 7.35-59.09 mg/g, respectively. The highest concentrations of stigmasterol and ${\beta}$-sitosterol were in the roots of 6-year-old P. ginseng cultivated in Jinan (82.14 mg/g and 53.23 mg/g, respectively). Conclusion: Six-year-old white ginseng and white ginseng cultivated in Jinan containing stigmasterol and b-sitosterol are potentially a new source of income in agriculture.

<P>Antifreeze proteins (AFPs) have important functions in many freeze-tolerant organisms. The proteins non-colligatively lower the freezing point and functionally inhibit ice recrystallization in frozen solutions. In our previous studies, we found that the Arctic yeast Leucosporidium sp. produces an AFP (LeIBP), and that the protein could be successfully produced in Pichia expression system. The present study showed that recombinant LeIBP possesses the ability to reduce the damage induced to red blood cells (RBCs) by freeze thawing. In addition to 40 % glycerol, both 0.4 and 0.8 mg/ml LeIBPs significantly reduced freeze-thaw-induced hemolysis at either rapid- (45 C) or slow-warming (22 C) temperatures. Post-thaw cell counts of the cryopreserved RBCs were dramatically enhanced, in particular, in 0.8 mg/ml LeIBP. Interestingly, the cryopreserved cells in the presence of LeIBP showed preserved cell size distribution. These results indicate that the ability of LeIBP to inhibit ice recrystallization helps the RBCs avoid critically damaging electrolyte concentrations, which are known as solution effects. Considering all these data, LeIBP can be thought of as a key component in improving RBC cryopreservation efficiency.</P>
Fatigue failure of a composite wind turbine blade at its root end

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>As blade failures at wind farms have increased, the structural safety of composite wind turbine blades is ever more important. The recent implementation of considerably larger blades has made the problem even more crucial. One of the critical failure modes is the blade root failure, which can result in the blade being pulled out from its wind turbine during operation. In this study, we experienced delamination failure at the blade root during fatigue testing of a 3MW full-scale wind turbine blade according to international standard IEC 61400-23: full-scale structural testing of rotor blades. Comparing the measured data with the FE analysis results, we simulated the situations the blade had experienced, and then found what caused the delamination failure as well as the problem of the conventional design approach. The bumping motions of the blade shell caused by geometric complexities between the maximum chord and the root alter significantly the load distribution at the end of the blade root. Therefore, to enhance the structural safety of a large composite wind turbine blade, a more detailed FE analysis on the blade root in the design stage is needed.</P>
