Aspects and Features of Instructional Conversation Serving to Scaffold EFL WebQuest Writing Performance

Haesong Harrison Lee 한국응용언어학회 2015 응용 언어학 Vol.31 No.1

This qualitative study, conducted as a follow-up to Lee’s (2014) experimental study, examined aspects and features of Instructional Conversation (IC) and IC discourse that serve to assist English as a foreign language (EFL) learners in their WebQuest writing performance. Interview data were collected from the three most successful online IC participants in Lee’s study and were subsequently analyzed using within-case and cross-case thematic analysis methods. Results indicated that (a) the structure/sequence of IC, (b) interactive participation, and (c) thematic focus assisted the EFL learners in their overall WebQuest writing performance, that (a) the structure/sequence of IC and (b) thematic focus assisted them in their performance on content, and that IC’s facilitation of understanding of content, along with the resulting improvement in other components of overall writing quality, assisted them in their performance on overall writing quality. An analysis of the texts from the online IC discussions in which the three interviewees participated revealed that the common themes identified through the cross-case analysis of the interview data were well manifested or reflected in the IC discussion data. Implications are discussed in both theoretical and practical terms.

Systemic TM4SF5 overexpression in ApcMin/+ mice promotes hepatic portal hypertension associated with fibrosis

        Joohyeong Lee,Eunmi Kim,Min-Kyung Kang,Jihye Ryu,Ji Eon Kim,Eun-Ae Shin,Yangie Pinanga,Kyung-hee Pyo,Haesong Lee,Eun Hae Lee,Heejin Cho,Jayeon Cheon,Wonsik Kim,Eek-hoon Jho,Semi Kim,Jung Weon Lee 생화학분자생물학회 2022 BMB Reports Vol.55 No.12

Mutation of the gene for adenomatous polyposis coli (APC), asseen in ApcMin/+ mice, leads to intestinal adenomas and carcinomasvia stabilization of β-catenin. Transmembrane 4 L sixfamily member 5 (TM4SF5) is involved in the development ofnon-alcoholic fatty liver disease, fibrosis, and cancer. However, the functional linkage between TM4SF5 and APC or β-cateninhas not been investigated for pathological outcomes. After interbreedingApcMin/+ with TM4SF5-overexpressing transgenic(TgTM4SF5) mice, we explored pathological outcomes in the intestinesand livers of the offspring. The intestines of 26-week-olddual-transgenic mice (ApcMin/+:TgTM4SF5) had intramucosal adenocarcinomasbeyond the single-crypt adenomas in ApcMin/+ mice. Additional TM4SF5 overexpression increased the stabilizationof β-catenin via reduced glycogen synthase kinase 3β (GSK3β)phosphorylation on Ser9. Additionally, the livers of the dualtransgenicmice showed distinct sinusoidal dilatation and featuresof hepatic portal hypertension associated with fibrosis, more than did the relatively normal livers in ApcMin/+ mice. Interestingly, TM4SF5 overexpression in the liver was positivelylinked to increased GSK3β phosphorylation (opposite to thatseen in the colon), β-catenin level, and extracellular matrix (ECM)protein expression, indicating fibrotic phenotypes. Consistentwith these results, 78-week-old TgTM4SF5 mice similarly had sinusoidaldilatation, immune cell infiltration, and fibrosis. Altogether, systemic overexpression of TM4SF5 aggravates pathologicalabnormalities in both the colon and the liver.

      • CD133-induced TM4SF5 expression promotes sphere growth via recruitment and blocking of protein tyrosine phosphatase receptor type F (PTPRF)

        Kim, Somi,Cho, Chang Yun,Lee, Doohyung,Song, Dae-Geun,Kim, Hye-Jin,Jung, Jae Woo,Kim, Ji Eon,Park, Dasomi,Lee, Haesong,Um, Hyejin,Park, Jinsoo,Choi, Yoonjeong,Kim, Yoomin,Nam, Seo Hee,Lee, Jung Weon Elsevier 2018 Cancer letters Vol.438 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>CD133 is a surface marker of liver cancer stem cells. Transmembrane 4 L six family member 5 (TM4SF5) promotes sphere growth and circulation. However, it is unknown how CD133 and TM4SF5 cross-talk with each other for cancer stem cell properties. Here, we investigated the significance of inter-relationships between CD133, TM4SF5, CD44, and protein tyrosine phosphatase receptor type F (PTPRF) in a three-dimensional (3D) sphere growth system. We found that CD133 upregulated TM4SF5 and CD44, whereas TM4SF5 and CD44 did not affect CD133 expression. Signaling activity following CD133 phosphorylation caused TM4SF5 expression and sphere growth. TM4SF5 bound to CD133 and promoted c-Src activity for CD133 phosphorylation as a positive feedback loop, leading to CD133-mediated sphere growth that was inhibited by TM4SF5 inhibition or suppression. TM4SF5 also bound PTPRF and promoted paxillin phosphorylation. Decreased sphere growth upon CD133 suppression was recovered by TM4SF5 expression and partially by PTPRF suppression. TM4SF5 inhibition enhanced PTPRF levels and abolished PTPRF suppression-mediated sphere growth. Altogether, CD133-induced TM4SF5 expression and function were important for liver cancer sphere growth and may be a promising target to block metastasis.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> The role of TM4SF5 and CD133 cross-talk in the CSC properties of HCC is unknown. </LI> <LI> CD133-induced c-Src, Akt, and β-catenin signaling mediates TM4SF5 induction. </LI> <LI> TM4SF5 drives CD133 phosphorylation via a bidirectional positive feedback loop. </LI> <LI> TM4SF5 binds PTPRF to regulate cellular signaling for anchorage-independent growth. </LI> <LI> CD133/TM4SF5/PTPRF and CD44 are potential biomarkers for HCC metastasis. </LI> </UL> </P>

Vol.2021 No.10

Surface Roughness and Cariogenic Microbial Adhesion after Polishing of Smart Chromatic Technology-based Composite Resin

        김해송,이주현,김해니,박호원,Haesong Kim,Juhyun Lee,Haeni Kim,Howon Park Korean Academy of Pediatric Dentistry 2023 大韓小兒齒科學會誌 Vol.50 No.1

This study compared the surface roughness and microbial adhesion characteristics of Omnichroma, a novel composite resin developed using "smart chromatic technology", with those of two other conventional composite resins with different filler compositions. A total of 144 specimens were fabricated using 3 types of composite resins: Omnichroma (nano-spherical), Filtek Z350XT (nanofill), and Tetric N-Ceram (nanohybrid) and, divided into 3 groups of 48. Finishing was performed using tungsten carbide burs. Specimens were then divided into 3 subgroups using different polishing methods: Control, SofLex, and PoGo. Surface roughness was analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively using an atomic force microscope and a scanning electron microscope. Microbial adhesion was assessed by culturing Streptococcus mutans on the specimens for 24 hours and then measuring colony-forming units attached to the upper surface. The surface roughness (Ra) of Omnichroma was 0.123 ㎛ after finishing, and it exhibited a smooth surface compared to the other resins. However, after polishing, there were no significant differences in the surface roughness between the three composite groups, regardless of the polishing methods. The surfaces of the Control subgroups were significantly rougher than those of the SofLex subgroups in all 3 composite groups. However, except for Tetric N-Ceram, there were no significant differences between the Control and PoGo subgroups in the other composite groups. Microbial adhesion assessment showed no significant differences between any of the 3 composite resin subgroups; however, Omnichroma exhibited higher microbial adhesion than the other two composites. No significant correlation was observed between surface roughness and microbial adhesion.

      • Electrocatalytic Activity of Carbon in N-Doped Graphene to Achieve High-Energy Density Li-S Batteries

        Kim, Jin Won,Jeon, Haesong,Lee, Jaeyoung American Chemical Society 2018 JOURNAL OF PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY C - Vol.122 No.40

<P>High-energy and cost-effective lithium-sulfur battery (LSB) technology has been regarded as a promising alternative to current rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. However, the utilization of LSB suffered from the gap between the theoretical expectation and practical observation. Here, we propose the mechanistic origin of the electrocatalytic role of carbon in the N-doped graphene (NDG) layer placed on the entire cathode. We understand that the carbon in NDG acts as an electrocatalyst by interactions with polysulfide, leading to efficient electrochemical charge and discharge behaviors. A sufficient sulfur loading amount (ca. 5.75 mg cm-2) is successfully achieved, and the developed cell in this work enables remarkable energy density (200 W h kgtotal cell-1) and high areal capacity (4 mA h cm-2).</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>
