This study intends to explore how production network changes in the process of the foreign direct investment, by comparing a Korean firm with a EU firm. Shanghai Volkswagen was established in 1984. The Chinese government imposed strong regulation of high local content in the early period of reform, and also granted various incentive for the Volkswagen to increase local content. Instead of replicating its own production system, the Volkswagen reconstructed the production network with local Chinese suppliers as well as global suppliers. Beijing Hyundai was established in 2002 right after China became a WTO member. The localization regulation cannot be imposed under the WTO rule, and the Chinese centralgovernment and the Beijing municipal government provided Hyundai with autonomy for the production network. Unlike Volkswagen, the Hyundai automobile replicated its own production network by moving to China together with Korean suppliers. While both cases show similar outcomes, the high rate of localization, the different constraints and responses resulted in different changes in production network.

This study aimed to identify efficient methods for the globalization of Korean food in Vietnam. For this, we interviewed owners of 11 Korean restaurants in Hanoi and 9 Korean restaurants in Ho Chi Minh. Due to the rapid economic development of Vietnam, the restaurant industry for the middle class has drastically increased. For the globalization of Korean food, new positioning of Korean restaurants is needed. Research has shown that Korean restaurants need to change their style of management. Although the first generation of Korean restaurant owners managed restaurants as a family business, a new professional management system is now required. Above all, it is necessary to develop and support a comprehensive food culture system in which the menu is suited to the taste of the natives and its recipe is distributed with food material quality control, hygienic control, and operation of a localized management system.

Background and Objectives

Differentiation and de-differentiation of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) are important events in atherosclerosis and restenosis after angioplasty. MicroRNAs are considered a key regulator in cellular processes such as differentiation, proliferation, and apoptosis. Here, we report the role of new miR-18a-5p microRNA and its downstream target genes in VSMCs and in a carotid balloon injury model.

Materials and Methods

Expression of miR-18a-5p and its candidate genes was examined in VSMCs and in a carotid artery injury model by quantitative reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and microRNA microarray analysis. VSMC differentiation marker genes including smooth muscle (SM) α-actin and SM22α were determined by Western blot, qRT-PCR, and a SM22α promoter study. Gene overexpression or knockdown was performed in VSMCs.

Results

miR-18a-5p was upregulated in the rat carotid artery at the early time after balloon injury. Transfection of the miR-18a-5p mimic promoted the VSMC differentiation markers SM α-actin and SM22α. In addition, miR-18a-5p expression was induced in differentiated VSMCs, whereas it decreased in de-differentiated VSMCs. We identified syndecan4 as a downstream target of miR-18-5p in VSMCs. Overexpression of syndecan4 decreased Smad2 expression, whereas knockdown of syndecan4 increased Smad2 expression in VSMCs. Finally, we showed that Smad2 induced the expression of VSMC differentiation marker genes in VSMCs.

Conclusion

These results indicate that miR-18a-5p is involved in VSMC differentiation by targeting syndecan4.

The purpose of this study was to examine and analyze the cognitive demand of the mathematical tasks suggested in the elementary school textbooks in Korea and Japan. In particular, it aimed to reveal the overall picture of the level of cognitive demand of the mathematical tasks in the strand of proportional reasoning in the textbooks. We adopted the framework for mathematical task analysis suggested by Stein & Smith(1998) and analyzed the mathematical tasks accordingly. The findings from the analysis showed that 38.9 percent of the mathematical tasks were at high level and the rest at low level in terms of cognitive demand in Korea. In Japan 18.7 percent of the mathematical tasks were at high level and the rest at low level in terms of cognitive demand. Most of the mathematical tasks in the textbooks were algorithmic and focused on producing correct answers by using procedures in both countries.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of nonverbal communication on customer trust and customer loyalty in hair and beauty service providers to build up a hair and beauty service strategy according to customers’ various needs and market changes. A questionnaire survey was conducted. Using a SPSS v. 21. statistical package program, frequency analysis, exploratory factor analysis, correlation analysis, linear regression analysis, and mediated regression analysis were performed. The results were as follows. The test of hypothesis 1 and 2 showed that expression language, spatial language, paralanguage, and appearance language of nonverbal communication had an important effect on customer trust and customer loyalty. The test of hypothesis 3 showed that customer trust had an effect on customer loyalty. The test of hypothesis 4 showed that customer trust met a partial mediation condition in the relationship between expression language, spatial language, paralanguage, and appearance language and customer loyalty. The findings suggest that the quality of nonverbal communication that has an intangible characteristic has an effect on customers’ service evaluation and works on a very important element in the process of service delivery. Customers’ evaluation of service quality is based on interaction between hair and beauty service providers and customers. Therefore, nonverbal communication quality should be steadily improved with technique. Also, related education system should be built up to develop various communication skills and have face-to-face activity to promote customer trust and royalty.

Objective:Histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors have been reported to improve essential and secondary hypertension. However, the specific HDAC that might serve as a therapeutic target and the associated upstream and downstream molecules involved in regulating hypertension remain unknown. Our study was aimed at investigating whether a selective inhibitor of class II HDAC (MC1568) modulates hypertension, elucidating the underlying mechanism. Methods:Hypertension was established by administering angiotensin II (Ang II) to mice before treatment with MC1568. SBP was measured. Results:Treatment with MC1568 reduced elevated SBP; attenuated arterial remodeling in the kidney's small arteries and thoracic aorta; and inhibited cell cycle regulatory gene expression, vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) proliferation, DNA synthesis, and VSMC hypertrophy in vivo and in vitro. Ang II enhanced the expression of phosphorylated HDAC4 and GATA-binding factor 6 (GATA6) proteins, which were specifically localized in the cytoplasm of cells in the arteries of kidneys and in aortas. Forced expression and knockdown of HDAC4 increased and decreased, respectively, the proliferation and expression of cell cycle genes in VSMCs. GATA6, a newly described binding partner of HDAC4, markedly enhanced the size and number of VSMCs. Calcium(2+)/calmodulin-dependent kinase II (CaMKII), but not HDAC4, translocated from the nucleus to the cytoplasm in response to Ang II. CaMKII and protein kinase D1 were associated with VSMC hypertrophy and hyperplasia via direct interaction with HDAC4. MC1568 treatment weakened the association between HDAC4 and CaMKII.Conclusion:These results suggest that class II HDAC inhibition attenuates hypertension by negatively regulating VSMC hypertrophy and hyperplasia via the CaMKII/protein kinase D1/HDAC4/GATA6 pathway.
