This study demonstrates that low processing rate for producing polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based carbon fiber is a critical to obtain a homogeneous radial microstructure with high resistance to oxidation, thereby resulting in their improved mechanical strength. The dry-jet wet spun PAN organic fibers were processed (e.g., stabilized and then carbonized) utilizing two different rates; one is 1.6 times longer than the other. The effect of processing rate on the microstructural evolutions of carbon fibers was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy after slow etching in air, as well as Raman mapping after graphitization. The rapidly processed fiber exhibited the multilayered radial structure, which is caused by the radial direction stretching of the extrusion in the spinning. In case of the slowly processed fiber, the layered radial structure formed in the spinning process was changed into a more homogeneous radial microstructure. The slowly processed fibers showed higher oxidation resistance, higher mechanical properties, and higher crystallinity than the rapidly processed one. Raman mapping confirmed that the microstructure developed during spinning was sustained even though fiber was thermally treated up to 2800 °C.

Metal (loid)s such as environmental contaminants affect food safety. Metal (loid)s exist trace extremely in agriculture products. Therefore it is important to analyze accurately about trace these metals. High resolution techniques and quality controls are needed to analyze these materials. In order to achieve quality results, standardized methods and techniques are required. So ISO(International Organization for Standardization) of laboratory proficiency testing is determination of laboratory testing performance by means of inter-laboratory comparison. The values have been derived as a consensus of a number of laboratories using a variety of methods. Proficiency tests were applied to analyze the metal(loid)s [inorganic arsenic (As), total As and cadmium (Cd)] in powdered rice FAPAS 07187 (Food Analysis Performance Assessment Scheme; February-April 2013). The rice powder sample was extracted with 1% HNO3 for inorganic As for microwave-assisted extraction using water at 95℃ for 90 min and their analysis by HPLC/ICPMS. Also, HNO3 for total As and Cd using microwave-assisted extraction using at 200℃ for 50 mins and analysis by ICP/MS. Validation check was performed for accuracy using CRM (NMIJ CRM 7503-a) for inorganic As, and CRM (IRMM-Rice CRM) for total arsenic and cadmium. The result were satisfactory. FAPAS 07187 the z-scores of inorganic As, total As and Cd in powdered rice were-1.8,-0.9 and 0.2(lzl<2, respectively).

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Among the most critical needs of natural product chemistry is a complete library of pure reference substances. Some khellactone-type isomers of pharmacological importance are either still lacking reference substances or references are only available in limited amounts. To address this need, a recycling high-performance liquid chromatography (R-HPLC) strategy was adopted to improve the isomer separation efficiency from <I>Peucedanum japonicum</I>. Under the optimal isolation conditions, we obtained isomerically pure substances, particularly khellactone coumarins with different substituent groups. Isolated compounds attained purities greater than 98% as determined by ultra-performance liquid chromatography-charged aerosol detector (UPLC-CAD) and photodiode array (PDA). The structures of these compounds were identified according to their mass patterns and 2D NMR spectra. The proposed methods of single-column recycling obtained the same amount of product as conventional systems while being simple, increasing efficiency and reducing cost.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> 2–7 fractions of <I>P. japonicum</I> roots inhibited the synthesis of nitric oxide (NO). </LI> <LI> Fifteen coumarins (<B>1</B>–<B>15</B>) from the fractions were isolated using a recycling HPLC. </LI> <LI> Khellactone-type coumarin isomers were efficiently separated by R-HPLC. </LI> </UL> </P>

<B>Abstract</B><P>Decision making in an emotionally conflicting situation is important in social life. We aimed to address the similarity and disparity of neural correlates involved in processing ambivalent stimuli in patients with schizophrenia and patients with depression. Behavioral task-related hemodynamic responses were measured using [<SUP>15</SUP>O]H2O positron emission tomography (PET) in 12 patients with schizophrenia and 12 patients with depression. The task was a modified word-stem completion task, which was designed to evoke ambivalence in forced and non-forced choice conditions. The prefrontal cortex and the cerebellum were found to show increased activity in the healthy control group. In the schizophrenia group, activity in these two regions was negligible. In the depression group, the pattern of activity was altered and a functional compensatory recruitment of the inferior parietal regions was suggested. The prefrontal cortex seems to be associated with the cognitive control to resolve the conflict toward the ambivalent stimuli, whereas the cerebellum reflects the sustained working memory to search for compromise alternatives. The deficit of cerebellar activation in the schizophrenia group might underlie the inability to search and consider compromising responses for conflict resolution. <P>Summary</P><P>Objective </P><P>Adiponectin receptors 1 and 2 (<I>ADIPOR1</I> and <I>ADIPOR2</I>) are considered as candidate genes for type 2 diabetes because they mediate the metabolic effects of adiponectin on target tissues. We investigated whether common polymorphisms of <I>ADIPOR1</I> and <I>ADIPOR2</I> are associated with type 2 diabetes or its related phenotypes in Koreans.</P><P>Design and patients </P><P>By sequencing of the DNA samples from 24 unrelated Korean subjects, we selected seven single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from <I>ADIPOR1 </I>and four SNPs from <I>ADIPOR2 </I>for genotyping in 757 type 2 diabetic patients and 644 nondiabetic subjects.</P><P>Results </P><P>None of the SNPs were associated with the risk of type 2 diabetes. However, g.−7309A>G (rs75172865) in <I>ADIPOR1 </I>was associated with lower insulin resistance, measured by the homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). Thereafter, we transfected three different human cell lines with plasmids harbouring g.−7309A>G and found that this variant reduced the promoter activity of <I>ADIPOR1</I>. In <I>ADIPOR2</I>, g.−63442G (novel SNP) and g.33447T (rs1044471) were associated with smaller waist circumference.</P><P>Conclusions </P><P>None of the SNPs in either <I>ADIPOR1 </I>or <I>ADIPOR2</I> were associated with the risk of type 2 diabetes in Koreans. However, the altered activity of the <I>ADIPOR1 </I>promoter was associated with insulin resistance and SNPs of <I>ADIPOR2</I> were associated with waist circumference.</P>

<P>In this letter, a novel SONOS NAND Flash memory array featuring arch-shaped silicon fin and extended word lines (WL) is proposed to improve virtual source/drain (VSD) performance. The arch shape concentrates electric field, resulting in higher electron concentration at the VSD region and higher on -state cell current. In addition, the extended WL process improves the short-channel-effect (SCE) immunity and <TEX>$I$</TEX>–<TEX>$V$ </TEX> characteristics. To verify these, an arch VSD NAND array device was fabricated and characterized. The integrated device shows very small SCE while obtaining high on-state cell current. Program and disturbance characteristics of the device are also confirmed.</P>
Simulation Analysis on the Power Grid in the Northeast Asia with GTMax

This study attempts to evaluate the possibility of power cooperation through the simulation analysis of electricity markets in Northeast Asian regions using the Generation-Transmission Maximization (GTMax) modeling. GTMax is a useful tool for analyzing power interconnection among countries and a software to maximize net revenues when an equilibrium for power trade and operation of power system is reached under the physical and institutional constraints. And it also contributed to building strategies based on hourly trade volumes, costs, and revenues by players participating in competitive electricity market. From the simulation results, this study indicates that the effect from interconnection with North Korea or Russia to domestic Korea electricity market is not so big. However, direct connection of transmission network from Korea to Russia has a clearly positive effect on power cooperation. Moreover, it is expected that power cooperation will be done in a way South Korea mainly imports. To maximize the effect of power transfer, it is absolutely necessary to expand the transfer capability of transmission line. Nonetheless, in CASE 5 (interconnecting South Korea with North Korea, Russia and China) scenario, positive effect in average LMP in South Korea is not likely to happen compared with CASE 2 (interconnecting South Korea with North Korea) scenario. And positive effect in average LMP in South Korea has been appeared in CASE 6 (interconnecting South Korea with North Korea, Russia, China and Direct transfer from Russia to Korea though power network) scenario.

A new kidney bean cultivar, “Noghyeob 1” was developed at the Yeongnam Agricultural Research Institute (YARI) in 2005. “Noghyeob 1” was selected from a cross between KLG50074 and KLG50063. It has determinate growth habit, white flower, green pod color, oval shape of crossed section of pod at the harvesting time for edible pod, white seed coat and middle seed size (21.1 grams per 100 seeds). The average yield of edible pod of “Noghyeob 1” was 24.25 M/T per hectare in the yield trials which were carried out at the green house in spring and autumn in 2005. It was 7 percent higher than that of the check cultivar “Kangnangkong 1”.
