Perinatal asphyxia is one of the most important factors contributing to neonatal morbidity and mortality. However, no clear-cut parameters exist which enable an early identification of neonates who are at risk to develop brain damage. We measured creatine kinase(CK), CK isoenzyme, AST, ALT, LDH in full term asphyxiated(n=35) and healthy(n=39) newborns at 6-10 hours after birth to establish the values of these enzymes in the retrospective diagnosis of asphyxia and if serum levels of these enzymes correlated with the abnormalities of neurosonography or auditory evoked potential. The asphyxiated newborns had significantly increased serum activities of CK-BB(93.5±160.8 IU/L) and CK-BB%(11.1±12.4%) compare to controls(39.2±37.2 IU/L, 3.9±3.4%). However, there were no significant differences in the enzyme activities between normal and abnormal groups of neurosonography or auditory evoked potential. It is concluded that elevated CK-BB and CK-BB% are reliable indicator of the neonatal asphyxia. But the predictive value of specific enzymes for the development of neurologic disorders is not clear. Prospective long-term follow up studies are necessary to evaluate the predictive value of enzyme activities for the neurologic outcome.

To determine a suitable etching method for the fabrication of semiconductors with a few nm or less thickness, many atomic layer etching (ALE) techniques have been studied. Previously, ALE studies on silicon-based materials have been reported; however, recently, the number of ALE studies on metals have also been increasing. Metals are applied to semiconductor devices as electrodes and hard mask materials, thus, there is an increasing need for precise etching using ALE techniques. Therefore, in this brief review, recently reported ALE studies on metals will be summarized, and the ALE process results for various metals will be described for two ALE methods, namely, anisotropic ALE and isotropic ALE.

In this study, an experiment was conducted to evaluate the behavior of fiber reinforced concrete beam according to GFRP(Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer)sheets and based on previous specimens and directly compare the fiber reinforcing effect. As a result, all specimens, regardless of the cross section shape, had an increase in torsional capacity and similar behavior compared to previous study.

This present study was conducted to investigate protective effect of discontinuous Percoll gradient containing alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) before freezing process on viability, acrosome damage, mitochondrial activity, and oxidative stress of frozen-thawed boar spermatozoa. The separation of spermatozoa by discontinuous Percoll gradient was performed by different concentration of Percoll solution (45/90%) containing ALA combined with bovine serum albumin (BSA), and collected sperm in each Percoll layer was cryopreserved. To evaluate viability, acrosome damage, mitochondrial activity, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) level of frozen-thawed sperm, flow cytometry was used. Morphological abnormalities were observed under light microscope. In results, viability of sperm from 90% Percoll layer was higher than control and 45% Percoll group (p < 0.05). Separated sperm in 90% Percoll layer had lower acrosome damage and morphological abnormalities than control as well as viability, whereas 45% Percoll group was higher (p < 0.05). Similar with acrosome damage and abnormalities, mitochondrial activity was slightly enhanced and the population of live sperm with high ROS level was decreased by 90% Percoll separation, however, there was no significant difference. Supplementation of 3 ng/mL ALA into Percoll solution increased sperm viability and decreased population of live sperm with high ROS compared to control (p < 0.05). In conclusion, discontinuous Percoll gradient before freezing process could improve efficiency of cryopreservation of boar sperm through selection of sperm with high freezing resistance, and supplement of ALA during Percoll gradient might contribute suppression of ROS generation via stabilizing of plasma membrane during cryopreservation.
The studies on characteristics of return to estrus in postpartum dairy cattle

This study attempted to determine the characteristic features of postpartum dairy cows during their return to estrus. Moreover, it investigated the effects of abnormal ovarian cycles (AOC) on subsequent reproductive performance and the relationship between normal ovarian cycles (NOC) and the blood urea nitrogen (BUN) level postpartum. Incidentally, 56.3% of the Holstein cows and 66.7% of the Jersey cows had NOC, whereas the 43.7% and 33.3% of the Holstein and Jersey, respectively, had AOC. Within 100 days of calving, the cows with AOC had significantly lower rates of artificial insemination (AI) submission as well as pregnancy and a significantly longer interval to first AI, as compared to that in the cows with NOC. Additionally, the cows with NOC had a significantly higher first AI conception rate than that in the cows with AOC. In this study, of the 32 Holstein cows, 8 resumed their ovarian cycle within 20 days of calving, 10 resumed the cycle with 21-40 days of calving, 8 within 41-60 days of calving, while the remaining 6 did not resume their ovarian cycles until 60 days postpartum. Furthermore, the likelihood ratios of incidence of NOC are 0.93, 1.94, and 0.38, respectively, in the groups with BUN levels < 15, 15-19.9, and ≥ 20 mg/ dl. In conclusion, AOC postpartum adversely affects reproductive performance such as AI submission rate, pregnancy rate, interval to first AI and first AI conception rate; moreover, an increase or decrease in the BUN levels beyond 15-19.9 mg/dL leads to the AOC postpartum.
