Hypertension is one of the major risk factor for cardiovascular disease and can lead to or make worse many complications, heart disease, atherosclerosis and diabetes. Thus, managing blood pressure effec tively using therapeutic drugs such as angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) and Ca2+ channel blocker (CCB) can be prevent other complications. Therefore, we investigated the synergistic effect of these two drugs, ir besartan and lercanidipine, for antihypertension, cardioprotection and antidiabetes. Irbesartan (28.74 mg/kg, 14.37 mg/kg) or lercanidipine (1.92 mg/kg, 0.96 mg/kg) alone or combination was administered to sponta-neously hypertensive rats (SHRs) and C57BL/6 mice. A two-week treatment of combination with irbesartan and lercanidipine significantly attenuated systolic blood pressure (SBP) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) compared with monotherapy. Futhermore. the combination therapy protected myocardial ischemia reperfusion injury more effectively than monotherapy. In vascular remodeling, combination therapy significantly diminished cuff -induced neointima formation and reduced serum -indllced vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) pro-liferation compared with monotherapy. However, combination therapy had no significant synergistic effect of blood glucose regulation. Taken together, present study suggest that the combination therapy of irbesartan and lercanidipine may be more effective therapeutic strategy for the treatment of hypertension and related complications, myocardial infarction and arterial restenosis than monotherapy

A strengthening technique for reinforced concrete beams using external unbonded reinforcement offers advantages in speed and simplicity of installation over other, established, strengthening techniques. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the capabilities of a new retrofitting technique, namely external prestressing(Bow), for flexural strengthening of beams. The paper provides a general description of structural behavior of beams strengthened using the technique. Results of 2 physical tests on strengthened reinforced concrete continuous beams are reported and compared. It is shown that the technique can provide greater strength enhancement to lightly reinforced sections and that provision of deflectors enhances efficiency.

In this work, ladder-shaped block copolymer structures consisting of parallel bars, bends, and T-junctions are formed inside square confinement. We define binary states by the two degenerate alignment orientations, and study properties of the two-state system. We control the binary states by creating openings around the confinement, changing the confinement geometry, or placing lithographic guiding patterns inside the confinement. Self-consistent field theory simulations show templating effect from the wall openings and reproduce the experimental results. We demonstrate scaling of a single binary state into a larger binary state array with individual binary state control.

The purpose of this experiment was to compare the pregnancy rate (PR) according to the state of the ovaries and uterus, according to the number of embryos transferred from cows and heifers and to investigate the method of artificial twin induction with Hanwoo in vitro fertilized (IVF) embryos by embryo transfer (ET). Looking at the PR according to the condition of the ovaries and uterus, the result was not influenced by the condition of the ovaries, but was significantly influenced by the state of the uterus. The PR according to the number of embryos transferred from cows was 36.8%, 53.0%, 50.5% for 1, 2, and 3 embryos, respectively and although there was a higher frequency of twin calves with 3 embryos than 2, the calving rate was the highest with 2 embryos. In case of heifers, the transfer of 1 embryo showed the best pregnancy and calving rate, and although the PR was similar with 2 embryos (67.7 versus 66.4), in case of 2 embryos transferred there was high frequency of embryonic loss (6.1%) occurred when a cow was diagnosed at 28 and 53 d after ET, total loss (21.3%); sum of fetal death, abortion and stillbirth after pregnant diagnosis at 60 day.
Comparison of Blood Metabolites and Enzyme Activities at Different Slaughter Ages of Hanwoo Cattle

This study was conducted to investigate changes of blood metabolites and enzyme activities at different slaughter ages of Hanwoo cattle. Blood samples were taken from six hundred thirty two steers(24~33 months of age) and one hundred twenty eight bulls(17~24 months of age) by venipuncture from caudal vein immediately prior to slaughter. Glucose concentrations were linearly increased(P<0.001) with increases of the slaughter age in steers, and blood urea nitrogen(BUN) concentrations were linearly decreased(P<0.001) with increases of the slaughter age in steers. Likewise, glucose and albumin concentrations in bulls were linearly decreased(P=0.009 and P<0.001, respectively) with increases of the slaughter age. BUN, cholesterol, triglycerides, and total cholesterol concentrations were linearly increased(P<0.001, 0.018 and 0.002, respectively), and creatinine concentrations were quadratically increased(P=0.009) with increases of the slaughter age. Activity of gamma glutamyltransferase(γ-GT) and aspartate aminotransferase(AST) was linearly increased(P<0.001) with increases of the slaughter age in both steers and bulls, whereas alanine aminotransferase(ALT) was not affected by increasing slaughter age. In addition, the concentrations of γ-GT and AST were higher(P<0.05) for bulls than those of steers at 24 months of age. Increased levels of γ-GT and AST indicate impaired liver function; it may be associated with increases of concentrate level which is a concomitant of the extended fattening periods in Hanwoo feeding. In conclusion, the results in the present study may be one of the useful information for diagnosis of the metabolic disorder in Hanwoo cattle.

Thirty six Hanwoo steers (average BW, 564.5±25.7 kg; average age, approximately 23 months) were used to evaluate the effects of a mixture of eugenol(14%), thymol(1%) and malate (85%) on growth performance, beef quality and liver function in Hanwoo finishing steers fed ahigh-concentrate diet. A feeding trial was conducted for 7 months in National Agricultural Cooperative Federation farm located in Anseong, Korea. Steers were assigned randomly to one of three treatments: control (without additive supplementation), treatment 1(0.05% additive of concentrate), treatment 2(0.1% additive of concentrate). The results of this study showed that initial and final BW averaged 564 and 755 kg, respectively, and BW gain was significantly higher (P<0.05) for steers fed the additive mixture than for those fed no mixture (0.78 and 0.79 vs. 0.69 kg/d, respectively). Serum aspartate aminotransferase in the T2 treatment was decreased during the 24 to 31 months of age. Although supplementation of additives resulted in no substantial effect on carcass characteristics, it had a potential effect to improve feed efficiency and AST concentration in Hanwoo finishing steers fed a high-concentrate diet. In conclusion, a mixture of eugenol, thymol and malate has shown promise in improving feed efficiency and liver function in the finishing phase of Hanwoo steers.

A randomized controlled trial to evaluate the long-term outcomes of laparoscopic distal gastrectomy for gastric cancer is currently ongoing in Korea. Patients with cT1N0M0-cT2aN0M0 (American Joint Committee on Cancer, 6th edition) distal gastric cancer were randomized to receive either laparoscopic or open distal gastrectomy. For surgical quality control, the surgeons participating in this trial had to have performed at least 50 cases each of laparoscopy-assisted distal gastrectomy and open distal gastrectomy and their institutions should have performed more than 80 cases each of both procedures each year. Fifteen surgeons from 12 institutions recruited 1,415 patients. The primary endpoint is overall survival. The secondary endpoints are disease-free survival, morbidity, mortality, quality of life, inflammatory and immune responses, and cost-effectiveness (ClinicalTrials.gov ID: NCT00452751).
