A VCD robust mode analysis of induced chirality: The case of pulegone in chloroform

<P>Vibrational modes in an achiral molecule may acquire rotational strength by complexation to a chiral molecule, as happens for achiral solvent molecules complexed to a chiral solute. We investigate this transfer of chirality in vibrational circular dichroism for the pulegone molecule in CDCl3 solvent from the point of view of the robustness concept introduced recently. It turns out that the transfer of chirality yields nonrobust modes, which means that, although they are observed in vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) experiments, the sign of these modes cannot be predicted reliably with standard (Density Functional Theory) VCD calculations. This limits the usefulness of the induced chirality phenomenon for obtaining information on the intermolecular interactions that give rise to it. Background : Sclerotinia rot, caused by a fungus Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, is one of the serious and unpredictable yield losses in perilla (Perilla frutescens) leaf production in Korea. Screening disease resistant genetic resources is necessary to develop disease-resistant cultivars and conduct related research. Methods and Results : A Total of 150 perilla accessions, including 123 Korean landraces and 27 cultivars developed in Korea, were evaluated for resistance to Sclerotinia rot (Sclerotinia sclerotiorum) using detached leaf inoculation technique. Sclerotinia sclerotiorum isolate KACC40457 was inoculated at the seedling stage (five to six leaves). For detached leaf method, a mycelial plug was placed fungus-side down on the main leaf vain and incubated at 22 ± 1℃ on moistened paper towel in a plastic box. Three Korean landraces, including IT117036, IT117106, and IT117110, and cultivar IT229431 showed 100% of resistance ratio (no. of plants showed below 1 ㎝ of lesion size/total evaluated plants × 100). Seven accessions including five landraces, IT117080, IT117107, IT117048, 117042, 117029, and two cultivaers, IT276225 and IT213781, showed high level of resistance that is higher than 80% of resistance ratio Conclusion : 11 accessions which showed strong and moderate level of resistance to Sclerotinia rot could be possibly used by breeders, farmers, and researchers to produce new disease resistant cultivars and use them commercially. However, research related to the exploration of appropriate materials (accessions) for breeding cultivars with good quality, high functional components, high consumer acceptability, etc. should be continued, considering pathogenicity test was conducted in young stage.

A previous study (Roberson, Pak & Hanley, 2008) demonstrated that Korean (but not English) speakers show Categorical Perception (CP) on a visual search task for a boundary between two Korean colour categories that is not marked in English. Moreover, fast Korean responders showed CP only in the right visual field while slow responders showed CP in both visual fields. The present study used eye-tracking to demonstrate that those responders who maintained fixation on a central point showed CP only in the right visual field. Responders who moved their eyes to search for targets showed the effect in both visual fields. These results support that CP in this task is mediated by processing in the left hemisphere.

Regional co-operations increase economic dependencies amongst their member countries. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) entered into a free trade agreement more than two decades ago and recently formed an economic community. It is crucial to understand if the escalated partnership will have an impact on each country’s financial sector. This research is aimed at analyzing dependency amongst the five original ASEAN members and the effect of macroeconomics on financial fragility, which is proxied by their banking and insurance sectors. To analyze the dependence of banking and insurance companies in ASEAN-5 countries, this research used a quantitative approach, a distance-to-default model, and cross-sectional analysis applied to the data while analysis of macroeconomic effects used simple regression. The research findings show that dependency of financial sectors amongst the countries does not exist, with Singapore’s banking and insurance sectors as the most prone to default. In general, the banking sector has a greater tendency toward financial fragility compared to the insurance sector. Macroeconomic variables influencing the financial fragility of the companies are influenced by variables such as GDP, LR, and PER for banks and IP and UE variables for insurance companies. It is necessary to conduct further research on the ASEAN Economy Community to analyze the financial fragility of all ASEAN member countries.

<P>FAD-dependent glucose dehydrogenase (FAD-GDH) of <I>Burkholderia cepacia</I> was successfully expressed in <I>Escherichia coli</I> and subsequently purified in order to use it as an anode catalyst for enzyme fuel cells. The purified enzyme has a low <I>K</I>m value (high affinity) towards glucose, which is 463.8 μM, up to 2-fold exponential range lower compared to glucose oxidase. The heterogeneous electron transfer coefficient (<I>K</I>s) of FAD-GDH–menadione on a glassy carbon electrode was 10.73 s−1, which is 3-fold higher than that of GOX–menadione, 3.68 s−1. FAD-GDH was able to maintain its native glucose affinity during immobilization in the carbon nanotube and operation of enzyme fuel cells. FAD-GDH–menadione showed 3-fold higher power density, 799.4 ± 51.44 μW cm−2, than the GOX–menadione system, 308.03 ± 17.93 μW cm−2, under low glucose concentration, 5 mM, which is the concentration in normal physiological fluid.</P> <P>Graphic Abstract</P><P>FAD-dependent glucose dehydrogenase (FAD-GDH) of <I>Burkholderia cepacia</I> was successfully expressed in <I>Escherichia coli</I> and subsequently purified in order to use it as an anode catalyst for enzyme fuel cells. <IMG SRC='http://pubs.rsc.org/services/images/RSCpubs.ePlatform.Service.FreeContent.ImageService.svc/ImageService/image/GA?id=c3cp51864g'> </P>
