        Chemistry and pharmacology of Bidens pilosa: an overview

        Bidens pilosa L. is an edible herb and has been traditionally used for a wide range of ailments in many countries. The aim of this review is to present comprehensive information of the chemical constituents, nutraceutical and ethnomedical uses as well as the biological and pharmacological effects and toxicity of this plant based on 218 literary sources reported over 40 years. Major chemical constituents (including 301 compounds) belonging to polyacetylenes, polyacetylene glycosides, flavonoids, flavone glycosides, aurones, chalcones, okanin glycosides, phenolic acids, terpenes, pheophytins, fatty acids and phytosterols have been identified or isolated from the different parts of this plant. Many of them have been considered as the bioactive compounds which are potentially responsible for the pharmacological actions. Various types of preparations, extracts and individual compounds derived from this plant have been found to possess biological and pharmacological activities such as anti-malarial, anti-allergy, antihypertensive and smooth muscle relaxant, anti-cancerogenic, anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, antioxidant. The results of data analysis on the chemicals, pharmacological and toxicological characteristics of B. pilosa validate the view of its folk worldwide-medicinal uses. This herb has a great beneficial therapeutic property and is possibly used for complement or alternative to pharmaceutical drugs in some specific cases. However, this herb is known as hyperaccumulator and as-excluder; therefore, harvesting the herb for medicinal uses should be judiciously cautioned.

        Unipolar Resistance Switching Characteristics in a Thick ZnO/Cu/ZnO Multilayer Structure

        The resistance switching mechanism and the electrical conduction of thick Cu/ZnO/Cu/ZnO/Cu structures were investigated for various ZnO thicknesses (40, 80, 160, and 320 nm) when the thickness of the middle Cu layer was 2 nm. The ZnO films had a microstructure with columnar grains normal to the substrate. The switching voltages (VSET and VRESET) varied with the thickness of the ZnO layer. A symmetric electrode structure exhibited a unipolar resistance switching. The electrical transport of both high-resistance state (HRS) and low-resistance state (LRS) was Ohmic conduction, and the resistance switching mechanism was driven by the formation and the rupture of Cu conducting paths.

        Influence of Credit on the Income of Households Borrowing from Banks: Evidence from Vietnam Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development, Kien Giang Province

        This paper investigates the determinants of credit accessibility and the effect of credit on the income of farm households borrowing from Vietnam Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development, Giong Rieng District Branch, Kien Giang Province. Based on the primary data of 200 farming households who are the customer of the bank, the study applied the Probit regression model to examine determinant factors of credit accessibility of farm households and employed the Propensity score matching method to investigate the impact of credit on households’ income. The findings of the Probit regression shown that three independent variables that significantly influence the access to credit of households are household size, income source, and farm size. Besides that, the Propensity score matching method results showed a difference of 23.799 million VND/year between the income of borrowing households and that of non-borrowing households at the significance level of 1%. The difference in the imcome from the interval and central matching methods are VND 24.700 million VND/year and VND 24.633 million VND/year, respectively. Given empirical findings suggetsted that several recommendations to increase the credit accessibility of farm households, thereby creating favorable conditions for improving their income.

        Grain-Size Effect on the Dielectric Properties of La1.5Sr0.5NiO₄ Nano-Particle Materials

        We have manufactured ceramic samples of La1.5Sr0.5NiO₄and studied their dielectric proper-ties. The samples were prepared by using a reactive mechanical milling technique on D8000-Spex combined with an annealing at a temperature in the range of 700 ℃ - 1000 ℃. The crystalline structure and the sample's purity were checked by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) on a SIEMENS D5000 spectrograph. The obtained XRD patterns conrmed that all the samples belonged to the F4K2Ni perovskite layer tetragonal structure with a space group of I4/mmm (139). The grain size of a ceramic sample was estimated based on the Field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE- SEM) images and was calculated by using the Warren-Averbach method based on the Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM) of the XRD lines. The results obtained by using the two methods were quite the same. The mean grain size (< D >) of the samples varied from 16.2 nm to 95 nm with the annealing temperature. Dielectric constant (ε) of all the samples was estimated from the capacitance measurement at different temperatures in the frequency range of 1 kHz - 13 MHz. The estimated ε of all the samples was about 105 over the whole frequency range up to 1 MHz. The temperature and the frequency dependences of ε(f T), the dielectric constant, were observed and are discussed for all the samples.         Dielectric resonance effect with negative permittivity in a La1.5Sr0.5NiO4+δ ceramic

        A polycrystalline sample of La1.5Sr0.5NiO4+δ was prepared by using a solid-state reaction. Xraydiffraction proved the sample to be a single phase with a tetragonal structure (space group:I4/mmm). By using an iodometric titration method to determine the non-stoichiometric oxygenconcentration (δ) in La1.5Sr0.5NiO4+δ, we found δ = −0.017, which corresponds to a doping level ofnh = x + 2δ = 0.466. Also, a strong increase of the magnetization in theM(T) curve at temperaturesbelow the spin-ordering temperature (TSO 100 K) was observed. The M(H) curves show verysmall magnetic moments, which proves the weak ferromagnetic nature of La1.5Sr0.5NiO4+δ. Thedependences of the dielectric constant on the frequency and the temperature, "(!, T) = "0(!, T) +i"00(!, T), was investigated in the frequency range of 1 − 13 MHz. At temperatures around roomtemperature, the maximum of the real part ("0) was higher than 105. Particularly, an abnormaldependence of the permittivity on frequency was observed. Depending on temperature, a dielectricresonance was observed at about 500 kHz or 8 MHz. Interestingly, we observed the dielectricresonanceeffect with a negative permittivity. Such a feature is very similar to that observed inleft-handed materials. The fitting of the experimental data for the dielectric constant at frequenciesaround the resonance frequency to the equations associated with an equivalent RLC series circuitproves that La1.5Sr0.5NiO4+δ belongs to the class of multiferroic materials.

        Conventional and inverse magnetocaloric effects, and critical behaviors in Ni43Mn46Sn8In3 alloy

        A systematic study of the conventional and inverse magnetocaloric effects, and critical behaviors in an alloy ingot of Ni43Mn46Sn8In3 has been performed. Our results reveal the sample exhibiting structural and magnetic phase transitions at temperatures TC M = 166 K (TC of the martensitic phase), TM-A =260 K (the martensitic-to-austenitic phase transformation) and TC A = 296 K (TC of the austenitic phase). The large values of refrigerant capacity (RC) around TMeA and TC A are found to be RCM-A = 172.6 and RCA = 155.9 J kg-1, respectively, under an applied field change of 30 kOe. Our critical analyses near the TC M and TC A reveal that a coexistence of the long- and short-range ferromagnetic order in the martensitic phase, while the long-range ferromagnetic order exists in the austenitic phase. Interestingly, at around TC A, the maximum magnetic entropy change (|ΔSmax|) versus magnetic field H obeys a power law, |ΔSmax| = a·Hn, where the exponent n is found to be about 0.66.

      • Data Forwarding Algorithm in Lossy Wireless Sensor Networks

        This paper proposes a novel forwarding algorithm for lossy wireless sensor networks (WSNs), which increases network performance in terms of received traffic at the sink (R0 pcakets/s) and network lifeline. Due to lossy wireless links, each sensor node forms around itself three different communication regions, each characterized by different packet reception rate (PRRs). An optimal forwarding algorithm is derived by solving a linear programming problem (LPP) with the objective of maximizing R0 while satisfyung the essential constraint of balancing energy consumption. From the results of the LPP, a new metric combining hop distance (HD) and PRR was developed to formulate a novel forwarding algorithm called direct and multi-hop data forwarding with lossy awareness (DMFLLA) algorithm. The results of simulation indicate that the Proposed DMFLLA algorithm outperforms the conventional algorithms with respect to R0 and network lifetime.
