• More buzz, more vibes: Impact of social media on concert distribution

Cho, Daegon,Hwang, Youngdeok,Park, Jongwon Elsevier 2018 JOURNAL OF ECONOMIC BEHAVIOR & ORGANIZATION Vol.156 No.-

Abstract

This paper examines the impact of social media on decision-making regarding concert locations in the music industry. The use of social media allows musicians to communicate directly with their current and potential fans, which provides useful information about where concerts will be more successful. In particular, with the use of social media, musicians are likely to reach out relatively unexplored regions in choosing their concert locations. To examine the effect of social media use on the distribution of concert locations, we introduce an empirical methodology, using a zero-inflated generalized linear mixed model with a log link function. The model accounts for potential heterogeneous locational and temporal traits, allowing us to measure the impact of characteristics of the population on location selection. The parameters estimated from this model support an argument that the use of social media encourages musicians to pursue unexplored markets that they may not have considered before the use of social media.

Highlights

We investigate the impact of the use of social media on the geographic distribution of concert locations.

We apply a zero-inflated Poisson (ZIP) model and isolate the effect of the use of social media from the overall temporal trend.

We find that musicians tend to reach out the less populous places for concerts where they had not given a concert before, after they create personal pages on YouTube, Twitter, and/or Facebook.

      • An Empirical Analysis of Smartphone Diffusions in a Global Context

Cho, Daegon World Association for Triple Helix and Future Stra 2015 Journal of Contemporary Eastern Asia Vol.14 No.1

This paper examines the diffusion of smartphones with a special emphasis on the diffusive interactions between Apple iOS and Google Android in a global context. Since the two mobile platforms were first introduced in the market, the use of smartphones has skyrocketed, suggesting that the dramatic diffusion of smartphones may be explained in part by the growth and competition of these two platforms. To study this, an extended Bass model is applied to a data set of quarterly smartphone sales between 2008 and 2013 for 15 countries. Our findings suggest that the innovation effect was more salient for iOS than for Android in developed countries, whereas the imitation effect was more striking for Android than for iOS in developing countries. Furthermore, our results from the co-diffusion model suggest that the diffusion of Android negatively affected by the diffusion of iOS, but not vice versa.

      • Thumbnail Image Design to Grab Views in Online Video Platform : Evidence from YouTube

Vol.2019 No.11

Thumbnail image is one of the most common forms of video visualization used in online video platforms that let viewers to catch a glimpse of the content before watching the whole video. In recent years, leading online video platforms have adopted the feature of custom thumbnails with which video creators can actively generate or edit images to promote the content. Although prior literatures have revealed visual presentation to significantly influence human attention and purchase decisions, there has been little to no empirical study on whether and which visual features of a video thumbnail are effective in driving more views. In this paper, we conduct an exploratory study on the effect of thumbnail images on video views with a rich data set from the largest video-hosting platform, YouTube. Based on image features extracted from machine-learning models, thumbnail design factors associated with the video views are identified using fixed-effect models.

      • Design and Validation of the Bright Internet

Lee, Jae,Cho, Daegon,Lim, Gyoo Association for Information Systems 2018 Journal of the Association for Information Systems Vol.19 No.2

Bright Internet research was launched as a core project of the AIS Bright ICT Initiative, which aims to build an ICT-enabled Bright Society. To facilitate research on the Bright Internet, we explicitly define the goals and principles of the Bright Internet, and review the evolution of its principles. The three goals of the Bright Internet are: the realization of preventive security, the provision of the freedom of anonymous expression for innocent netizens, and protection from the risk of privacy infringement that may be caused by preventive security schemes. We respecify design principles to fulfill these seemingly conflicting goals: origin responsibility, deliverer responsibility, identifiable anonymity, global collaboration, and privacy protection. Research for the Bright Internet is characterized by two perspectives: first, the Bright Internet adopts a preventive security paradigm in contrast to the current self-centric defensive protective security paradigm. Second, the target of research is the development and deployment of the Bright Internet on a global scale, which requires the design of technologies and protocols, policies and legislation, and international collaboration and global governance. This research contrasts with behavioral research on individuals and organizations in terms of the protective security paradigm. This paper proposes validation research concerning the principles of the Bright Internet using prevention motivation theory and analogical social norm theory, and demonstrates the need for a holistic and prescriptive design for a global scale information infrastructure, encompassing the constructs of technologies, policies and global collaborations. An important design issue concerns the business model design, which is capable of promoting the propagation of the Bright Internet platform through applications such as Bright Cloud Extended Networks and Bright E-mail platforms. Our research creates opportunities for prescriptive experimental research, and the various design and behavioral studies of the Bright Internet open new horizons toward our common goal of a bright future.

      • The role of goal setting and feedbacks on energy monitoring and conservation behaviors

Vol.2017 No.10

The research on energy-saving behavior to date has a number of limitations. Firstly, it has not addressed the impact of goals with feedback under various household contexts. Second, it has not addressed the linkage between energy-monitoring behavior and energy-saving behavior. We address these limitations using detailed information obtained from households through a survey. In addition, to address the second limitation, we analyze mobile app access data as a proxy of energy-monitoring behavior. We find that goal setting with feedback reduces consumption by around 9 kWh per month. Most interestingly, we find that the positive effect of energy-monitoring behavior (app access) on energy use reduction completely disappears (and even becomes negative) for subjects not provided both goals and feedback.

      • The Internet is not Always Malicious : An Empirical Investigation of Socioeconomic Status, Social Capital, and Internet Crime

Vol.2016 No.11

When is the Internet used maliciously for criminal activity? This study examines the conditions under which the Internet is associated with cybercriminal offense. Using comprehensive state-level data in the United States during 2003-2010, our findings demonstrate that there is no clear empirical evidence that Internet penetration is correlated with the Internet crime perpetrators, though the effects of Internet on cybercriminal activities are contingent upon connection speed and socioeconomic factors. Contrary to narrowband, broadband connections are significantly and positively associated with the Internet crime perpetrators. Strikingly, the moderating effects of socioeconomic status are significant only in the absence of social capital. In U.S. states with low social capital, the Internet crime perpetrators increase with the Internet usage when the local economy grew with more education, less unemployment rate, and less population in poverty. Income inequality there also positively moderates the effects of Internet on cybercrime perpetrators. Some implications to reconcile the conflicting consequences of Internet penetration are discussed.

        김유미(Yoomi Kim),조대곤(Daegon Cho),홍성옥(Sungok Hong),김은주(Eunju Kim),강성홍(Sunghong Kang) 대한지리학회 2014 대한지리학회지 Vol.49 No.6

As chronic diseases have become more prevalent and problematic, effective cares for major chronic diseases have been a locus of the healthcare policy. In this regard, this study examines how regionspecific characteristics affect the prevalence of hypertension in South Korea. To analyze, we combined a unique multi-year data set including key indicators of health conditions and health behaviors at the 237 small administrative districts. The data are collected from the Annual Community Health Survey between 2009 and 2011 by Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other government organizations. For the purpose of investigating regional variations, we estimated using Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) and decision tree model. Our finding first suggests that using the multi-year data is more legitimate than using the single-year data for the geographical analysis of chronic diseases, because the significant annual differences are observed in most variables. We also find that the prevalence of hypertension is more likely to be positively associated with the prevalence of diabetes and obesity but to be negatively associated with population density. More importantly, noticeable geographical variations in these factors are observed according to the results from the GWR. In line with this result, additional findings from the decision tree model suggest that primary influential factors that affect the hypertension prevalence are indeed heterogeneous across regional groups. Taken as a whole, accounting for geographical variations of health conditions, health behaviors and other socioeconomic factors is very important when the regionally customized healthcare policy is implemented to mitigate the hypertension prevalence. In short, our study sheds light on possible ways to manage the chronic diseases for policy makers in the local government.
