The simultaneous synthesis of a phytosteryl ester and enrichment of stearidonic acid (SDA) were performed via a one-step lipase-catalyzed esterification of fatty acids from Ahiflower(TM) seed oil with phytosterol. A commercial lipase (Lipase OF) from Candida rugosa was employed as a biocatalyst. Three solvents were screened and cyclohexane was selected as a suitable reaction medium. The effects of enzyme loading, temperature, and solvent amount were investigated. The conversion as well as the SDA content were significantly improved by adding molecular sieves after 1h of reaction. The optimum conditions were the enzyme loading of 10% (based on the total substrate weight), the temperature of 30oC, and the solvent amount of 4mL (based on a substrate weight of 2g), respectively. The maximum conversion and SDA content in the residual fatty acid were 81mol% and 58 mol%, respectively, under the optimum conditions. The SDA content increased a 3.4-fold from 17 mol% in Ahiflower(TM) seed oil to 58mol%.

Abstract

The characteristics of non-metallic inclusions (NMI) that precipitated in an equiatomic CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy (HEA) were investigated in order to understand their effect on the mechanical properties of the HEA. As the existence of NMI could degrade the mechanical properties, improved information concerning NMI could hold key importance in controlling the promising applications of HEA. An equiatomic HEA composed of CoCrFeMnNi was manufactured using vacuum induction melting (VIM) method. A thermodynamic computation program (FactSage™7.0) was used to investigate the solidification process of the HEA at both equilibrium and non-equilibrium states. Furthermore, the computational program also predicted the type of inclusions that would precipitate. Through an electrolytic extraction process and scanning electron microscopy - energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) observations, the actual compositions of the precipitated inclusions were observed and classified as (a) Mn-Cr-Al oxide, (b) Mn(S,Se), and (c) mixed type; a Mn-Cr-Al oxide core with a Mn(S,Se) shell. Mn-Cr-Al oxide, in a brittle spinel-structured phase with high melting temperature, was also observed in dimples on the fracture surface. The relationship between the tensile properties of HEA and the characteristics of NMI were discussed by comparing two CoCrFeMnNi specimens with the same structure and composition. Overall, the present results indicate that the tensile properties of the HEA were significantly degraded as the area fraction (AF) and number density (ND) of NMI increased.

Highlights

Qualitative and quantitative characterization of non-metallic particles in HEA was performed.

Effect of impurity on non-metallic particle in HEA was thermodynamically simulated.

Fracture mechanics of HEA with crack initiation under load condition was revealed.

Importance of manufacturing (impurity, casting) conditions of HEA was highlighted.

Necessity of refining non-metallic particles in HEA was highlighted.

Graphical abstract

[DISPLAY OMISSION]

Purpose: Exercise intervention after surgery has been found to improve physical fitness and quality of life (QOL). The purpose of this study was to investigate the feasibility and effects of a postoperative recovery exercise program developed specifically for gastric cancer patients (PREP-GC) undergoing minimally invasive gastrectomy. Materials and Methods: Twenty-four patients treated surgically for early gastric cancer were enrolled in the PREP-GC. The exercise program comprised sessions of In-hospital Exercise (1 week), Home Exercise (1 week), and Fitness Improvement Exercise (8 weeks). Adherence and compliance to PREP-GC were evaluated. In addition, body composition, physical fitness, and QOL were assessed during the preoperative period, after the postoperative recovery (2 weeks after surgery), and upon completing the PREP-GC (10 weeks after surgery). Results: Of the 24 enrolled patients, 20 completed the study without any adverse events related to the PREP-GC. Adherence and compliance rates to the Fitness Improvement Exercise were 79.4% and 99.4%, respectively. Upon completing the PREP-GC, patients also exhibited restored cardiopulmonary function and muscular strength, with improved muscular endurance and flexibility (P<0.05). Compared to those in the preoperative period, no differences were found in symptom scale scores measured using the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Core Quality of Life Questionnaire (QLQ-C30) and Quality of Life Questionnaire-Stomach Cancer-Specific Module (QLQ-STO22); however, higher scores for global health status and emotional functioning were observed after completing the PREP-GC (P<0.05). Conclusions: In gastric cancer patients undergoing minimally invasive gastrectomy, PREP-GC was found to be feasible and safe, with high adherence and compliance. Although randomized studies evaluating the benefits of exercise intervention during postoperative recovery are needed, surgeons should encourage patients to participate in systematic exercise intervention programs in the early postoperative period (Registered at the ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT01751880).

Only blood transfusion of the wrong ABO group will be expected to produce an immediate interference with renal blood flow except very few exceptions. But, very occasionally, despite apparent compatibility in vitro, transfused red cells are destroyed ed sufficiently rapidly idly to produce a hemolytic transfusion reaction. On the other hand, there are some cases in which severe reactions occurred following the transfusion of apparently compatible blood in these cases a blood group antibody was demonstrated in the patient's serum after transfusion although it could not be demonstrated in the pre transfusion serum. We present here very similar two cases. Acute renal insufficiency after ABO group and Rh-D compatible blood transfusion in our cases may be due to. 1. Rapid destruction of transfused red cells without demonstrable antibody. 2. Hemolysis due to blood group antibody only temporarily absent. 3. Hemolysis due to high temperature or unknown factor. 4. Hemolysis due to inadequate container within blood collecting bottles.

Recently, request far application of advanced commercial technology to the defense acquisition process, to reduce the budget and shorten development time, has been increased. To accomplish these goals, the Advanced Concept Technology Demonstration(ACTD) is used for the defense acquisition process in Korea. And User Utility Assessment is tested to make a decision for transition to acquisition process. But this process does not include measurement of technology maturity and impacts of interface and interaction among the technologies. In this research, we propose the needs of measurement of TRL and IRL and application of SRL to reduce the risk during development phase, to understand the relations of technologies, and to fulfill the requirement far transition of the ACTD project to system development and demonstration process.

Eight Borrelia burgdorferi strains, which had been isolated from Ixodes nipponensis and Apodemus agrarius captured in the Chungju area of Korea, were characterized by ospC gene sequence analysis. Nucleotide sequence similarity among the Chungju strains ranged from 83.6 to 100%. Deduced amino acid sequence similarity of the Chungju strains ranged from 75.4 to 100%. In a molecular phylogenetic analysis, the Chungju strains were separated from B. burgdorferi and B. garinii reference strains, and formed a cluster with B. afzelii reference strains. Three (KK2, KM4, and KK5), two (CJ2 and CJ21), and one (CJ3) Chungju strains formed clusters with OspC serotype 5, OspC serotype 8, and OspC serotype 7 reference strains, respectively. However, two Chungju strains (KK1 and KM10) formed a distinctive cluster that was separated from other strains of B. afzelii reference strains. These results suggest that Chungju strains are very heterogeneous in clonality.
