Cyanobacteria are able to produce diverse value-added biochemicals from CO<sub>2</sub> and light. To utilize the potency, it is critical to understand the photosynthetic mechanism under various environmental conditions. Here, we investigated the inhibitory mechanisms of photosynthesis under high light and low temperature stress in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803. Under each stress condition, the transcript abundance and translation efficiency were measured using RNA-seq and Ribo-seq, and the transcription unit architecture was constructed by transcription start sites and transcript 3'-end positions obtained from TSS-seq and Term-seq. Our results suggested that the mode of photosynthesis inhibition differed between the two stress conditions. The poor translation of photosystem I resulted from ribosome stalling at the untranslated regions, affecting the overall photosynthesis under low temperature. Our multi-omics analysis with transcription unit provides foundational information on photosynthesis for future industrial strain development.

Chunghyuldan (Daio-Orengedokuto in Japanese) (CHD) has been used as an antihyperlipidemic and antiischemic agent in Korea. To evaluate in vitro the efficacy of Chunghyuldans (CHDs) metabolized with and without human intestinal microflora against brain ischemia, we investigated its anti-inflammatory effect on LPS-induced RAW264.7 cells. Both metabolized CHD (MCHD) and CHD showed antioxidant activities in vitro, and inhibited nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) productions in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced RAW264.7 cells. These also inhibited enzyme activities and protein expressions of inducible NO synthase and cyclooxygenase-2 in LPS-induced RAW264.7 cells. MCHD-inhibitory activity against NO and PGE2 productions in LPS-induced RAW264.7 cells was more potent than those of CHD. These results suggest that CHD may Show potent anti-inflammatory activity in vivo and can improve brain ischemia.

Synthesis and characterization of novel germanium-containing poly(p-phenylenevinylene) derivatives

<P>Novel blue-emitting germanium-containing poly(p-phenylenevinylene) (PPV) derivatives with well-defined conjugation lengths were synthesized via Wittig-condensation polymerizations. The polymers can be color-tuned by the introduction of various chromophores into the PPV-based polymer backbones. The photoluminescence (PL) spectra of the polymers, GePVK (containing carbazole moieties), GeMEH (containing dialkoxybenzene moieties), and GePTH (containing phenothiazine moieties), were found to exhibit blue, greenish blue, and green emissions, respectively. GePTH produces more red-shifted emission than GeMEH and GEPVK, resulting in green emission, and the solution and solid state PL spectra of GePVK consist of almost blue emission. The electroluminescence spectra of GeMEH and GePTH contain yellowy green and yellow colors, respectively. Interestingly, GePVK exhibits white emission with CIE coordinates of (0.33, 0.37) due to electroplex emission in the light-emitting diodes. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Wall Voltage and Priming Effect Due to Auxiliary Electrode in AC PDP With Auxiliary Electrode

<P> Variation of wall voltage and priming effect due to an auxiliary electrode are investigated with the aim of attaining a better understanding of the discharge phenomenon in an ac plasma display panel with an auxiliary electrode. A periodic positive pulse, which is applied to the auxiliary electrode during afterglow, reduced wall charges accumulated on the auxiliary and sustain electrodes so that discharge current decreased with an increase of auxiliary-pulse voltage. In addition, the auxiliary pulse influenced on the priming particles so that the optical output was not changed as much as the reduced current and sustain voltage was lowered. Based on these results, modified auxiliary-pulse waveforms, i.e., dual auxiliary pulses, were applied to the auxiliary electrode to utilize more priming particles to improve luminous efficacy. The proposed auxiliary waveforms improved IR efficiency by 10%–15% as compared to that obtained with a single auxiliary pulse. </P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Rho GTPases control a wide range of cellular processes, and their deregulation is associated with promotion of an aggressive and metastatic tumor phenotype in human cancers. Rho guanine nucleotide dissociation inhibitor 1 (RhoGDI1) plays a key role in regulating the activity of Rho GTPases. However, the underlying mechanisms are still unclear. In this study, we show that protein phosphatase 1B (PPM1B) interacts with RhoGDI1 and functions as its phosphatase. Ectopic expression of PPM1B results in dephosphorylation of RhoGDI1 and, thereby, abates the activation of RhoA, Rac1 and CDC42 by epidermal growth factor (EGF). PPM1B overexpression in Hs578T and SKBR3 human breast cancer cells decreases their motility and invasiveness <I>in vitro</I> and cancer metastasis <I>in vivo</I>. In contrast, knockdown of PPM1B in MCF-7 and MDA-MB-468 human breast cancer cells that express endogenous PPM1B enhances EGF-induced RhoGDI1 phosphorylation, activation of Rho GTPases, and cancer cell migration and invasion. Knockdown of RhoA or Rac1 by siRNA reverses the enhanced cell migration seen after PP1MB depletion. Collectively, these results indicate that PPM1B negatively regulates cancer cell motility and invasiveness through dephosphorylating RhoGDI1.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> PPM1B interacts with RhoGDI1 and functions as its phosphatase. </LI> <LI> PPM1B abates the activation of RhoA, Rac1, and Cdc42 by EGF. </LI> <LI> PPM1B suppresses the migration and invasion of cancer cells <I>in vitro</I> and tumor metastasis <I>in vivo.</I> </LI> <LI> We provides new insight into the molecular mechanism by which PPM1B regulates the migration and invasion of cancer cells. </LI> </UL> </P>

핵연료 운반용 실린더의 재사용을 위한 용기세척공장의 제염공정에 대한 성능을 평가하기 위하여 Na2CO3 + H2O2 혼합용액의 조합을 약간 달리한 2회의 시험을 실행하였다. 각 시험은 모두 일련의 5 단계에 걸쳐 실시되었다. 우라늄 제염의 주 화학종은 Na4UO2(CO3)3 로 식별되었다. 그리고 첫 단계에서의 세척액은 물이었으며, 이 단계에서 50% 이상의 우라늄이 제염되었다. 그 이후로는 단계가 더해 갈수록 우라늄의 제염양은 지수함수적으로 감소하는 경향을 나타내었으며, 화학양론적으로 제거된 우라늄에 비하여 투여된 Na2CO3 의 양은 과다함을 나타내었다. 이러한 결과들에 의하면, 공정최적화를 통하여 Na2CO3 의 투여량 감축, 세척폐액의 감량, 제염단계 축소 등을 꾀할 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.

<P> Welders are at risk of being exposed to high concentrations of welding fumes and developing pneumoconiosis or other welding-fume exposure-related diseases. Among such diseases, manganism resulting from welding-fume exposure remains a controversial issue, as although the movement of manganese into specific brain regions has been established, the similar movement of manganese presented with other metals, such as welding fumes, has not been clearly demonstrated as being similar to that of manganese alone. Meanwhile, the competition between Mn and iron for iron transporters, such as transferrin and DMT-1, to the brain has also been implicated in the welding-fume exposure. Thus, the increased signal intensities in the basal ganglia, including the globus pallidus and subcortical frontal white matter, based on T1-weighted magnetic resonances in welders, require further examination as regards the correspondence with an increased manganese concentration. Accordingly, to investigate the movement of manganese after welding-fume exposure, 6 cynomolgus monkeys were acclimated for 1 mo and assigned to 3 dose groups: unexposed, low dose of (total suspended particulate [TSP] 31 mg/m3, 0.9 mg/m3 of Mn), and high dose of total suspended particulate (62 mg/m3 TSP, 1.95 mg/m3 of Mn). The primates were exposed to manual metal-arc stainless steel (MMA-SS) welding fumes for 2 h/day in an inhalation chamber system equipped with an automatic fume generator for 6 mo. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies of the basal ganglia were conducted before the initiation of exposure and thereafter every month. During the exposure, the blood chemistry was monitored every 2 wk and the concentrations of metal components in the blood were measured every 2 wk and compared with ambient manganese concentrations. The manganese concentrations in the blood did not show any significant increase until after 2 mo of exposure, and then reached a plateau after 90 days of exposure, showing that an exposure period of at least 60 days was required to build up the blood Mn concentration. Furthermore, as the blood Mn concentration continued to build, a continued decrease in the MRI T1 relaxation time in the basal ganglia was also detected. These data suggested that prolonged inhalation of welding fumes induces a high MRI T1 signal intensity with an elevation of the blood manganese level. The presence of a certain amount of iron or other metals, such as Cr and Ni, in the inhaled welding fumes via inhalation was not found to have a significant effect on the uptake of Mn into the brain or the induction of a high MRI T1 signal intensity.</P>
