<P>Though <I>Cnidium officinale</I> Makino (COM) was known to have anti-angiogenic, anti-oxidant, neuroprotective, and anti-cancer effects, the underlying anticancer mechanism of COM using endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and miRNA remained unclear until now. Thus, in the current study, the inhibitory mechanism of COM in lymphoma and multiple myeloma (MM) cells was elucidated. COM exerted cytotoxicity in U937 and U266 but not Raw264.7 cells. COM treatment increased the expression of ER stress-related proteins such as p-protein kinase RNA-like endoplasmic reticulum kinase (p-PERK), p-eukaryotic initiation factor (p-eIF2α), and activating transcription factor 4 (ATF4) and C/EBP homologous protein (CHOP). COM also cleaved poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) in a dose-dependent manner in both cells. Also, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation was elevated by COM treatment. Conversely, the apoptotic effect of COM treatment was blocked by <I>N</I>-acetyl-<SMALL>L</SMALL>-cysteine (NAC) pretreatment. Also, the pro-survival miRNA, miR-211 was decreased by COM treatment in U937 and U266 cells. miR-211 mimic attenuated COM-induced apoptosis. Taken together, these results support the scientific evidence that COM induces apoptosis via ROS generation/CHOP activation and miR-211 suppression in U937 and U266 cells.</P>
Si 도핑이 InAs 자기조립 양자점 적외선 소자 특성에 미치는 효과

We investigate the characteristics of self-assembled quantum dot infrared photodetectors(QDIPs) based on doping level. Two kinds of QDIP samples are prepared using molecular beam epitaxy : $n^+-i(QD)-n^+$ QDIP with undoped quantum dot(QD) active region and $n^+-n^-(QD)-n^+$ QDIP containing Si direct doped QDs. InAs QDIPs were grown on semi-insulating GaAs (100) wafers by molecular-beam epitaxy. Both top and bottom contact GaAs layer are Si doped at $2{\times}10^{18}/cm^3$. The QD layers are grown by two-monolayer of InAs deposition and capped by InGaAs layer. For the $n^+-n^-(QD)-n^+$ structure, Si dopant is directly doped in InAs QD at $2{\times}10^{17}/cm^3$. Undoped and doped QDIPs show a photoresponse peak at about $8.3{\mu}m$, ranging from $6{\sim}10{\mu}m$ at 10 K. The intensity of the doped QDIP photoresponse is higher than that of the undoped QDIP on same temperature. Undoped QDIP yields a photoresponse of up to 50 K, whereas doped QDIP has a response of up to 30 K only. This result suggests that the doping level of QDs should be appropriately determined by compromising between photoresponsivity and operating temperature.

The aims of this study were to summarize results on the association of HLA-DRB1 with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in Asians and to determine if the shared epitope (SE) hypothesis could explain the meta-analysis results. Among the papers published between January 1987 and July 2006 on RA susceptibility in Asian-Mongoloid populations (Korean, Japanese, Chinese, and Thai), 12 were selected for the metaanalysis. Mongoloid-Asian patients with RA had significantly higher frequencies of HLA-DRB1*0101, *0401, *0410, and *1001 than controls (OR 1.5-2.1, p<0.05 for association). When analyses were restricted to more ethnically homogeneous populations, HLA-DRB1*0405 showed a significant susceptibility to RA in Koreans (OR 5.65, 95% CI 4.32-7.39), whereas the HLA-DRB1*0301, *0403, *0406, *0701, *1301, and *1405 alleles showed protective association with RA (OR 0.32-0.70, p<0.05 for association). In conclusion, it was found that HLA-DRB1 *0101, *0401, *0405, *0410, and *1001 are susceptible, while HLA-DRB1* 0301, *0403, *0406, *0701, *1301, and *1405 are protective in Asian-Mongoloids. All the RA-associated alleles except DRB1*0301 could be explained by the structural model supporting the SE hypothesis that RA susceptibility is determined by the combination of amino acid residues at HLA-DR 71 and 74, not by 71 alone.

We describe an intra-articular schwannoma involving the knee, an extremely unusual location for this lesion. This case shares the typical magnetic resonance (MR) findings of neural tumors, but also involves atypical features not previously highlighted, related to its solitary involvement and relatively larger size. Schwannoma should be included in the differential diagnosis of intra-articular masses in the knee joint.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Mitochondria are one of the most important organelles in our body. Recent studies showed morphology of polymorphous organelle mitochondria can be used as a relevant biological marker for certain diseases. In this study, we developed new fluorescent mitochondrial probe, <B>5</B>, for monitoring mitochondrial morphology via rational probe design using 1,2-dihydropyrrolo[3,4-<I>b</I>]indolizine-3-one. To overcome the drawback of triphenylphosphonium incorporation, pyridinium group was introduced as a mitochondria targeting moiety. Additional incorporation of olefin moiety between pyridinium and indolizine core skeleton in <B>5</B> induced a bathochromic shift of both absorption and emission wavelength along with increased hydrophobicity. Finally, we found <B>5</B> selectively stains the mitochondria under the live-cell condition. This work indicated that a simple change of chemical structure in a certain organic fluorophore can cause a significant transition in staining pattern of bioprobes.</P>
