      • V<sub>2</sub>O<sub>5</sub> xerogel electrodes with much enhanced lithium-ion intercalation properties with N<sub>2</sub> annealing

        <p>V<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB> xerogel films were fabricated by casting V<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB> sols onto FTO glass substrates and annealing at 300 °C for 3 hours in nitrogen and air. The films annealed in nitrogen and air possessed different grain size and crystallinity. Optical absorption measurements and electrochemical impedance analyses revealed a reduced optical bandgap and enhanced electrical conductivity of N<SUB>2</SUB> annealed V<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB> film. Lithium ion intercalation measurements showed that at a charge/discharge current density of 600 mAg<SUP>−1</SUP>, the N<SUB>2</SUB> annealed sample possessed noticeably better lithium ion storage capability. In contrast to the air annealed sample, which started with a discharge capacity of 152 mAhg<SUP>−1</SUP> but after 50 cycles the capacity had decreased to a low value of only 44 mAhg<SUP>−1</SUP>, the N<SUB>2</SUB> annealed sample started with a low value of 68 mAhg<SUP>−1</SUP> but the capacity increased sharply to a high value of 158 mAhg<SUP>−1</SUP> at the 24<SUP>th</SUP> cycle, followed by little capacity degradation in later cycles and after 50 cycles, the discharge capacity was still as high as 148 mAhg<SUP>−1</SUP>. Much improved lithium ion intercalation capacity and cyclic stability could be attributed to surface defects V<SUP>4+</SUP> and/or V<SUP>3+</SUP> and associated oxygen vacancies introduced by N<SUB>2</SUB> annealing as well as much less crystallized vanadium oxide.</p> <P>Graphic Abstract</P><P>V<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>5</SUB> films annealed in N<SUB>2</SUB> exhibited a much improved lithium ion intercalation capability as compared to counterparts annealed in air, highly favoring potential application as lithium ion battery electrodes. <img src='http://pubs.rsc.org/ej/JM/2009/b914436f/b914436f-ga.gif'> </P>

        Effect of probiotics and xylo-oligosaccharide supplementation on nutrient digestibility, intestinal health and noxious gas emission in weanling pigs

        Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of probiotics (Bacillus subtilis and Enterococcus faecium) and xylo-oligosaccharide (XOS) supplementation on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, serum profiles, intestinal health, fecal microbiota and noxious gas emission in weanling pigs. Methods: A total of 240 weanling pigs ([Yorkshire${\times}$Landrace]${\times}$Duroc) with an average body weight (BW) of $6.3{\pm}0.15kg$ were used in this 28-day trial. Pigs were randomly allocated in 1 of the following 4 dietary treatments in a $2{\times}2$ factorial arrangement with 2 levels of probiotics (0 and 500 mg/kg probiotics) and XOS (0 and 200 mg/kg XOS) based on the BW and sex. Results: Administration of probiotics or XOS improved average daily gain (p<0.05) during 0 to 14 d and the overall period, while pigs that were treated with XOS had a greater average daily gain and feed efficiency (p<0.05) compared with unsupplemented treatments throughout 15 to 28 d and the whole experiment. Either probiotics or XOS treatments increased the apparent total tract digestibility of nutrients (p<0.05) during 0 to 14 d. No effects on serum profiles were observed among treatments. The XOS increased villus height: crypt depth ratio in jejunum (p<0.05). The supplementation of probiotics (500 mg/kg) or XOS (200 mg/kg) alone improved the apparent total tract digestibility of dry matter, nitrogen and gross energy on d 14, the activity of trypsin and decreased fecal NH3 concentration (p<0.05). Administration of XOS decreased fecal Escherichia coli counts (p<0.05), while increased lactobacilli (p<0.05) on d 14. There was no interaction between dietary supplementation of probiotics and XOS. Conclusion: Inclusion of XOS at 200 mg/kg or probiotics (Bacillus subtilis and Enterococcus faecium) at 500 mg/kg in diets containing no antibiotics significantly improved the growth performance of weanling pigs. Once XOS is supplemented, further providing of probiotics is not needed since it exerts little additional effects.

      • Array-based Nano-amplification Technique Was Applied in Detection of Hepatitis E Virus

        A rapid method for the detection of Hepatitis E Virus (HEV) was developed by utilizing nano-gold labeled oligonucleotide probes, silver stain enhancement and the microarray technique. The 5'-end -$NH_2$ modified oligonucleotide probes were immobilized on the surface of the chip base as the capture probe. The detection probe was made of the 3'-end -SH modified oligonucleotide probe and nano-gold colloid. The optimal concentrations of these two probes were determined. To test the detection sensitivity and specificity of this technique, a conservative fragment of the virus RNA was amplified by the RT-PCR/PCR one step amplification. The cDNA was hybridized with the capture probes and the detection probes on microarray. The detection signal was amplified by silver stain enhancement and could be identified by naked eyes. 100 fM of amplicon could be detected out on the microarray. As the results, preparation of nano-gold was improved and faster. Development time also was shortened to 2 min. Thus, considering high efficiency, low cost, good specificity and high sensitivity, this technique is alternative for the detection of HEV.

        Mechanical and Tribological Properties of Short Basalt Fiber-reinforced Polyoxymethylene Composites

        In this paper, short basalt fiber-reinforced polyoxymethylene (POM) composites were prepared by melt blending and injection molding. The mechanical and tribological properties of the composites were studied by an orthogonal experiment. It was found that the optimal combination of fiber length 4 mm, fiber content 20 wt% and treated with KH550 would result in a comprehensive property which is 27.45% higher tensile strength, 9.65% higher impact strength and 18.11% higher flexural strength with compared to that of pure POM. But its tribological properties would be worse with the addition of the basalt fibers. After incorporating 10 wt% of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) into the composites, the tribological properties of the composites was improved, closed to that of pure POM, with an insignificant decrease to their mechanical properties. Moreover, the morphology of fracture surfaces and worn surfaces evaluated by scanning electron microscopy showed good agreement with the results of the literature.

        KRAB family is involved in network shifts in response to osmotic stress in camels

        A feature of the camel is its tolerance to osmotic stress. However, few studies of osmotic stress in vivo or comparative analyses between different tissues of the camel have been performed. Here, we report the roles of Krüppel-associated box domain containing zinc-finger repressor proteins (KRAB-ZFPs) in transcriptional networks under osmotic stress in camels by analyzing transcriptomes of four different tissues under various osmotic conditions. We found that 273 of 278 KRAB-ZFPs were expressed in our data set, being involved in all of the 65 identified networks and exhibiting their extensive functional diversity. We also found that 110 KRAB-ZFPs were hub genes involved in more than half of the networks. We demonstrated that the osmotic stress response is involved in network shifts and that KRAB-ZFPs mediate this process. Finally, we presented the diverse mechanisms of osmotic stress responses in different tissues. These results revealed the genetic architecture of systematic physiological response in vivo to osmotic stress in camels. Our work will lead to new directions for studying the mechanism of osmotic stress response in anti-arid mammals.

        Preparation of low density TiO_2/poly (methyl methacrylate) composite particles by emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization

        Based on the 3-(trimethoxysilyl) propylmethacrylate (MPS) modified TiO_2 particles, the TiO_2/poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) composite particles have been prepared successfully via emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization in water. A facile floating-sinking method is proposed to roughly evaluate the composite particles’ density. Chemical component of obtained composite particles was identified by Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR). The morphology and grain size of the composite particles were investigated by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Thermal analysis of the composite particles was measured by differential thermal analysis-thermo gravimetric analysis (DTA-TGA). The zeta potential and electrophoretic mobility of composite particles with suitable density in water was measured by dynamic light scattering (DLS).

        Experimental and Numerical Investigation on the Cyclic Behavior of SRC Columns considering Unsymmetrical Confinement Effect

        Experimental and numerical studies were conducted on the cyclic behavior of steel reinforced concrete (SRC) columns with T-shaped and L-shaped steel section. A total of 8 SRC columns were tested under axial compression and lateral cyclic loading. The design details, loading procedure and main results, including the failure modes, hysteretic characteristics and ductility were reported. Four failure modes as flexural failure, shear bond failure, shear compression failure and shear compound failure were observed. By considering various unsymmetrical confinement and plastic hinge region, the experimental study was supplemented by numerical analysis to study the influence of axial compression ratio, shear-span ratio and concrete strength. The results revealed that the FEA is in good agreement with the experimental results. The ultimate loading of specimen with confinement effect has been improved by 21.4% − 33.8%. The failure modes is dominated by the shear-span ratio and type of cross section. The specimens with smaller shear-span ratio are prone to shear failure, while the unsymmetrical steel arrangement causes shear compound failure which is combined with shear bond failure and shear compression failure. Moreover, the specimens with larger shear-span ratio and stirrup ratio present greater deformation capacity and ductility. In practical engineering, the confinement degree of SRC columns with unsymmetrical steel section can be enhanced by increasing the stirrup ratio and arranging the cross ties.

      • A Security Assessment Framework and Selection Method for Outsourcing Cloud Service

        Cloud services have become state of the art of resource sharing and interoperability among different service providers. The federated cloud seek to reduce costs and maximize efficiency, provide flexible and reliable services composed of various external cloud service and internal services, but this would introduce a risk of security due to outsourcing. For organization which provide an integrity cloud service must rely on SLA to illustrate the capacity of risk and performance, the various providers involved in the federations or services compositions should effectively distribute the organizational responsibilities and SLA. To solve the fears and deal with the threats associated with outsourcing, new method for selection of outsourcing cloud service providers(CSP) based on assessment of security and performance is urgently needed. This paper presents an approach on how to select the proper CSP to guarantee organizational SLA, which quantify the SLA terms and calculate a security weight, the organization can choose the appropriate CSP based on security weight, meanwhile minimize the business cost. This paper make contribution on modeling the capacity of the CSP, considering the business cost and historical performance. The proposed approach is validated through case study that shows selected CSP through our approach can best meet the organizational security and cost needs.

        Calcination and sintering effects on the microstructure and dielectric properties of CaCu3Ti4O12 ceramics

        CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO) ceramics were fabricated by a conventional solid-state reaction at various calcination and sintering temperatures. Depending on the relative dielectric constant (εr) at 1 kHz, the specimens can be categorized into three types:type A (εr < 5 × 104), type B (5 × 104 < εr < 105) and type C (εr > 105). The value of εr is closely related to the microstructure:type-A specimens show a morphology with large grains embedded in a small-grained matrix, type-B specimens present a network structure and type-C specimens display a core-shell structure. Different dielectric loss variation tendencies are observed in the type-A specimens, which can be well explained by impedance spectroscopy analysis and further confirmed by the EDX results. Also, the proper calcination and sintering temperature ranges needed to achieve good comprehensive properties are given.
