      • The effect of international licensing-in experience on latecomer’s international licensing-out

        Numerous papers in international management and strategy have addressed international licensing-out as a type of foreign market entry mode. Scholars, however, haven’t paid enough attention to what firm-level factors determine international licensing-out at the firm-level. To fill this theoretical gap, this paper investigates the effect of firm-level international licensing-in experience on international licensing-out in the context of latecomer firms in the early stage of catch-up. Using a panel dataset of 58 Korean pharmaceutical latecomer firms during 2004 to 2017, we conducted panel Poisson regression to test the influences of international licensing-in experience and international licensing-in experience involving external tacit knowledge transfer on latecomer firm’s international licensing-out. The results show that external tacit knowledge transfer by international licensing-in enhances latecomer firm’s international licensing-out while international licensing-in experience reduces it.

        Design of 0.25 lm 2.7 V 2T2C 4 Mb asynchronous ferroelectric random access memory (FRAM)for mobile applications

        In order to fabricate nonvolatile 4 Mb ferroelectric random access memory (FRAM) for the application to portable electronicdevices, we proposed two noble techniques; (1) shared sense amplier arrangement structure for reducing a chip size, active current,and power consumption, and (2) address transition detection (ATD) control scheme for asynchronous operation and limited addressskew-free. We successfully developed 4 Mb FRAM with the address access time of 90 ns, read/write cycle time of 100 ns, and limitedaddress skew-free of 20 ns at 2.7 V and 85˚C.

        후발기업의 내부 R&D와 모방 경험이 혁신에 미치는 영향

        This paper investigates how latecomer firms(latecomers)’ internal R&D investment and imitation affect innovation. Most of latecomers entering industries are relatively lack of critical resources, such as technologies, financial resources, and R&D engineers or scientists compared to the industry incumbents. To survive and build competitive advantage, latecomers either imitate products and technologies of incumbent firms or invest in R&D activities to build their own innovation capabilities. Based on the literature of latecomers’ innovation, we developed hypotheses regarding how the latecomer’s R&D investment affect incremental and radical innovation and how knowledge diversity of imitation moderates the relationship between R&D investment and incremental and radical innovation performance, respectively. We constructed the panel dataset of 10 years(2006~2015) of 58 Korean pharmaceutical firms which can be seen as representative latecomer firms, and tested the hypotheses using random-effect panel Poisson model. We found that the knowledge diversity of imitation and R&D investment has a positive interaction effect on incremental innovation performance, but each has no independent effect. Meanwhile, the results show that the R&D investment has positive effect on the latecomer’s radical innovation, but the knowledge diversity of imitation negatively moderates the positive effect of R&D investment on radical innovation. Such findings imply that latecomers would be better to increase the knowledge diversity of imitation and R&D investment simultaneously to promote incremental innovation, but to adopt more focused imitation strategy to pursue radical innovation. Based on the results, we suggest that establishing strategic imitation portfolio at the firm level will be a feasible and useful innovation strategy for latecomers.

        넷플릭스의 경쟁 전략: 네트워크 효과, 콘텐츠 재판매, 오리지널 콘텐츠의 전략적 조합

        넷플릭스는 미디어 산업의 일대 혁신을 가져온 전 세계 1위의 디지털 OTT (Over-the-Top) 서비스 기업이다. 넷플릭스는 영화, 드라마, 다큐멘터리 등의 고품질 영상 콘텐츠를 디지털 기반의 인터페이스를 통해 전 세계 약 2억 명의 월정액 구독자에게 제공하고 있다. 넷플릭스는 OTT 서비스 사업 초기에 내부 빅데이터 분석 역량을 토대로 구독자 전체 규모가 증가할수록 정밀도가 높아지는 디지털 콘텐츠 큐레이션 서비스를 제공함으로써 직접 네트워크 효과를 창출하고 외부 콘텐츠 제작자로부터 양질의 콘텐츠를 대량으로 공급받아 구독자에게 재판매함으로써 조기에 OTT 서비스를 시장에 안착시킬 수 있었다. 넷플릭스는 외부 콘텐츠 제작자의 과도한 저작권료 인상 요구에 직면하면서 사업 운영의 근본적 위기에 처하게 되었으나 전략적으로 후방 통합을 실시하여 OTT 서비스 사업자겸 콘텐츠 제작자로 비즈니스 모델을 전환하였다. 넷플릭스는 내부 빅데이터 분석 결과를 토대로 구독자 맞춤형 오리지널 콘텐츠를 제작, 독점 배급함으로써 상업적으로 큰 성공을 거두었으며 오리지널 콘텐츠를 해외 시장에 빠르게 이전함으로써 기하급수적 속도의 글로벌화에도 성공하였다. 하지만 이와 같은 후방 통합 전략은 외부 콘텐츠 제작자의 전방 통합을 촉진하는 등 기업 성과에 ‘양날의 검’으로 작용하였으며 넷플릭스는 경쟁 우위 유지를 위해 장기적 관점에서 양면 시장 플랫폼 도입과 같은 전략적 대안을 고려할 필요가 있다. 디지털 전환의 시대에 넷플릭스 성공 사례는 디지털 서비스 기업의 경쟁 전략 수립과 실행에 대해 통합적 시사점을 제공한다. Netflix is the world"s No. 1 digital over-the-top (OTT) service provider that revolutionized the media industry. Netflix provides high-quality video contents such as movies, dramas, and documentaries to about 200 million monthly subscribers worldwide through a digital-based interface. From the beginning of the OTT service business, Netflix created a direct network effect by providing a digital content curation service that increases in precision as the total number of subscribers increases based on internal big data analysis capabilities. In addition, Netflix was able to settle the OTT service in the market early by licensing a large amount of high-quality contents from external content producers and reselling it to subscribers. Netflix subsequently faced a fundamental crisis in business operations while facing excessive demand for royalty increases by external content producers, but strategically implemented backward integration to transform the business model into an OTT service provider and content producer. Based on the results of internal big data analysis, Netflix succeeded in commercial success by producing and exclusively distributing original contents customized for Netflix’s subscribers, and also succeeded in globalizing at the exponential speed by rapidly transferring original contents to overseas markets. However, Netflix"s backward integration strategy poses a risk of "double-edged sword" effect to corporate performance, such as promoting forward integration of external content creators, so it is necessary to consider strategic alternatives such as implementing a platform business model based on two-sided markets from a long-term perspective. The Netflix case provides integrated implications for establishing and implementing a competitive strategy for digital service companies in this age of digital transformation.

      • EBCOT 속도 향상을 위한 비트 평면 부호화기 구조 설계

        본 논문은 비트평면 부호화기의 계산량을 줄이기 위한 효율적인 BPC 구조를 설계하였다. 계산량을 줄이기 위해 표준에서 요구되는 3개의 코딩 패스를 상태정보 예측기법으로 코딩 패스 간의 의존도를 제거하여 코딩 패스 자체를 제거하고, 비트 평면 내에서 비트 단위로 스캔하는 구조를 코드-블록 메모리에서 읽어 오는 컬럼(stripe) 단위로 처리하도록 구조를 설계하였으며, 메모리 사용량을 줄이기 위한 방안으로 표준에서 스캔하는 동안 상태정보를 저장하기 위해 사용되는 메모리들(σ, σ‘, η 등)을 없애고 코드-블록 메모리에서 읽어온 값을 기반으로 상태정보를 예측하는 기법을 사용하여 표준에서 사용되는 상태정보를 저장하는 메모리들을 사용할 필요가 없다. 본 논문에서 제안한 알고리즘은 기존의 모델보다 37% 정도의 속도 향상과 70% 정도의 메모리 사용량 감소가 가능하다.

      • 3D tissue formation by stacking detachable cell sheets formed on nanofiber mesh

        <P>We present a novel approach for assembling 3D tissue by layer-by-layer stacking of cell sheets formed on aligned nanofiber mesh. A rigid frame was used to repeatedly collect aligned electrospun PCL (polycaprolactone) nanofiber to form a mesh structure with average distance between fibers 6.4 mm. When human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs), human foreskin dermal fibroblasts, and skeletal muscle cells (C2C12) were cultured on the nanofiber mesh, they formed confluent monolayers and could be handled as continuous cell sheets with areas 3. x. 3 cm(2) or larger. Thicker 3D tissues have been formed by stacking multiple cell sheets collected on frames that can be nested (i.e. Matryoshka dolls) without any special tools. When cultured on the nanofiber mesh, skeletal muscle, C2C12 cells oriented along the direction of the nanofibers and differentiated into uniaxially aligned multinucleated myotube. Myotube cell sheets were stacked (upto 3 layers) in alternating or aligned directions to form thicker tissue with similar to 50 mu m thickness. Sandwiching HUVEC cell sheets with two dermal fibroblast cell sheets resulted in vascularized 3D tissue. HUVECs formed extensive networks and expressed CD31, a marker of endothelial cells. Cell sheets formed on nanofiber mesh have a number of advantages, including manipulation and stacking of multiple cell sheets for constructing 3D tissue and may find applications in a variety of tissue engineering applications.</P>

      • Closed-loop Multi-rate Identification with zone-MPC using Constrained Subspace Method

        In many industrial processes, process variables have different sampling intervals and they are referred to as multi-rate (MR) systems. When these systems are controlled by model predictive control which is useful to control of constrained multivariable process, model mismatch can occur because of changing in process dynamics. Thus, identification of a new model is necessary. The new model should be identified in closed-loop if the process needs to comply particular operating range for product specification or safety requirement. In this paper, the re-identification problem of a MR system in a closed-loop with a MPC controller is addressed, considering the lifted system and known dynamic characteristics. In comparison with the existing approach, the proposed identification method provides more accurate and realistic model.

        Ultrasonographic Identification of the High-Risk Zone for Medial Antebrachial Cutaneous Nerve Injury in the Elbow

        Objective To demonstrate the sonoanatomy of the medial antebrachial cutaneous nerve (MACN) in the elbow region using high-resolution ultrasonography (HRUS) to identify areas at a high risk of MACN injury. Methods A total of 44 arms were included in the study. In the supine position, the participants’ arms were abducted 45° with the elbow fully extended. The MACN was visualized in the transverse view. The anterior branch of the MACN (ABMACN), posterior branch of the MACN (PBMACN), and location of the branching sites were determined. The distance between the ABMACN and superficial veins, including the basilic vein (BV) and median cubital veins (MCV) was measured. For the PBMACN, the distance to the ulnar nerve (UN) and to BV were measured. Results The MACN was subdivided into 2.18±1.00 branches, including ABMACN and PBMACN. The ABMACN and PBMACN were subdivided into 1.60±0.78 and 1.07±0.25 branches, respectively. The branching point of the MACN was 8.40±2.42 cm proximal to the interepicondylar line (IEL). We demonstrated that the ABMACN is located close to the BV and MCV in the elbow region, and the PBMACN was located approximately 1 cm and 0.8 cm anterior to the UN and posterior to the BV at the IEL level, respectively. Conclusion Considering the location of the MACN, including ABMACN and PBMACN, clinicians can perform invasive procedures around the elbow region more carefully to lower the risk of MACN injury.
