Non-union is one of the most serious complication of the fractures of the long bone, and it is often difficult to achieve union. Forty one cases with non-union of the long bones who had been treated by rigid stabilization and cancellous bone grafting at the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Chonbuk National University Hospital, from March, 1980 to December, 1984 are clinically analysed.

<P>In this study, 3D polycaprolactone (PCL) scaffolds were fabricated by 3D printing technique. The macro/nano morphology of 3D PCL scaffolds surface was etched with oxygen plasma. Acrylic acid (AA) plasma-polymerization was performed to functionalize the macro/nano surface with carboxyl groups and then collagen was immobilized with plasma-polymerized 3D PCL scaffolds. After O-2 plasma and AA plasma-polymerization, contact angles were decreased. The FE-SEM and AFM results showed that O-2 plasma is increased the surface roughness. The MTT assay results showed that proliferation of the M3CT3-E1 cells increased on the oxygen plasma treated and collagen immobilized 3D PCL scaffolds.</P>
Direct Observation of a Carbon Filament in Water-Resistant Organic Memory

<P>The memory for the Internet of Things (IoT) requires versatile characteristics such as flexibility, wearability, and stability in outdoor environments. Resistive random access memory (RRAM) to harness a simple structure and organic material with good flexibility can be an attractive candidate for IoT memory. However, its solution-oriented process and unclear switching mechanism are critical problems. Here we demonstrate iCVD polymer-intercalated RRAM (i-RRAM). i-RRAM exhibits robust flexibility and versatile wearability on any substrate. Stable operation of i-RRAM, even in water, is demonstrated, which is the first experimental presentation of water-resistant organic memory without any waterproof protection package. Moreover, the direct observation of a carbon filament is also reported for the first time using transmission electron microscopy, which puts an end to the controversy surrounding the switching mechanism. Therefore, reproducibility is feasible through comprehensive modeling. Furthermore, a carbon filament is superior to a metal filament in terms of the design window and selection of the electrode material. Complex tungsten carbides of fine grain sire and Ni as a binding metal were developed with TiC and SiC as additives. The process to produce cemented carbides based on (W-Si-Ti)C-10wt.%Ni consisted of mixing W and TiC powders with liquid glass(SiO₂) and carbon powder and carburizing at 1500∼1550℃ to form SiC coating, adding 10wt.% of Ni powders and sintering. As a result, we obtained a fine grain size in the range of 0.4∼1.0 ㎛, a high micro-Vickers hardness of 1830 ㎏/㎟ and a relative density higher than 97%. TiC appeared to retard grain growth and enhance hardness by forming (W, Ti)C and Ni₃Ti. This was evidenced by the morphological features of (W, Ti)C and WC phases as well as the distribution characteristics of the elements observed by electron microscopy.

Acromegaly is a chronic disorder caused by excessive growth hormone (GH) secretion. In most cases, the excess GH originates from GH-producing pituitary adenomas. Surgery is the preferred first-line treatment for patients with acromegaly, but medical man-agement is considered when the disease persists after surgery or in cases where patients refuse surgery or are poor candidates for surgery. Somatostatin analogues are commonly used to treat acromegaly. The Korean Endocrine Society and the Korean Neuroendocrine Study Group have developed a position statement for the use of somatostatin analogues in the medical treatment of acromegaly. This position statement is based on evidence from the current literature and expert opinions. In the case of discrep-ancies among expert opinions, the experts voted to determine the recommended approach. (Korean J Med 2019;94:485-494)

In southern region of Korea, double cropping system including soybean as a second crop is widely adopted because prolonged high temperature in October enables soybean maturation even in late autumn. Global warming during decades derives transition of soybean planting dates as late as late-July. Delayed planting beyond the critical time moves reproductive stage to less favorable weather conditions like low temperature and short photoperiod, which can affect soybean yield and seed composition. Therefore selection of appropriate cultivar for changed climate and cultural practice is required. Effects of different eco-type and planting date on soybean yield was investigated for three sowing dates of 20 June, 5 July and 20 July with ten cultivars. Strong interaction between cultivar and sowing date was detected in number of branch, node and pod. No significant interaction was observed in 100-grain weight and yield, and this might be resulted from similar yield reduction pattern. Daepung, Taekwang and Uram recorded the highest yield when planted late, proving that these three cultivars are the most adaptable to delayed planting. Delayed planting results in higher sugar content, especially stachyose and raffinose which have detrimental effect on human health by causing flatulence and diarrhea. Protein content was decreased and oil content was increased in July 20 planting. Decrease in protein content was the largest in Hwangeumol and maintained high in Saedanbaek. This information will provide a guideline when select appropriate soybean cultivar in delayed planting to maintain yield and seed quality.
