To gain a better understanding on the function of the potato Solanum tuberosum Multiprotein Bridging Factor 1 protein (StMBF1) its interaction with the TATA box binding protein (TBP) was demonstrated. In addition we reported that StMBF1 rescues the yeast mbf1 mutant phenotype, indicating its role as a plant co-activator. These data reinforce the hypothesis that MBF1 function is also conserved among non closely related plant species. In addition, measurement of StMBF1 protein level by Western blot using anti-StMBF1 antibodies indicated that the protein level increased upon $H_2O_2$ and heat shock treatments. However, the potato $\beta$-1,3-glucanase protein level was not changed under the same experimental conditions. These data indicate that StMBF1 participates in the cell stress response against oxidative stress allowing us to suggest that MBF1 genes from different plant groups may share similar functions.
Tobamovirus Coat Protein CPCg Induces an HR-like Response in Sensitive Tobacco Plants

When inoculated into sensitive tobacco Xanthi-nn plants, the crucifer and garlic-infecting Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV-Cg) induces local necrotic lesions that resemble those seen in the hypersensitive response (HR) of resistant tobacco plants. However, unlike these, tobacco Xanthi-nn plants do not become resistant to infection and the virus spreads systemically causing a severe disease characterized by necrotic lesions throughout the plant. To identify the viral protein that elicits this necrotic response, we used a set of hybrid viruses constructed by combination of TMV-Cg and the tobacco mosaic virus strain U1 (TMV-U1). In this study we present evidence that the coat protein of TMV-Cg (CPCg) is the elicitor of the necrotic response in tobacco Xanthi-nn plants. Local and systemic necrotic lesions induced by TMV-Cg and by the hybrid U1-CPCg -that carries CPCg in a TMV-U1 context- are characterized by cell death and by the presence of autoflorescent phenolic compounds and H2O2, just like the HR lesions. In addition, defense-related genes and detoxifying genes are induced in tobacco Xanthi-nn plants after TMV-Cg and U1-CPCg inoculation. We postulate that in our system, CPCg is recognized by sensitive tobacco plants that mount an incomplete defense response. We call this an HR-like since it is not enough to induce plant resistance.

Background/Aims Chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction (CIPO) is a rare syndrome characterized by a failure of the propulsion of intraluminal contents and recurrent symptoms of partial bowel obstruction in the absence of mechanical obstruction. Regional variations of the intestinal compromise have been described. Intestinal manometry can indicate the pathophysiology and prognosis. Our objective is to establish the demographic and clinical characteristics of group Chilean patients and analyze the motility of the small intestine and its prognostic value. Methods Patients with symptoms of intestinal pseudo-obstruction with dilated bowel loops were included, in all of whom a manometry of the small intestine was performed using perfused catheters. Results Of the 64 patients included, 51 women (average age 41.5 ± 17.6 years), 54 primary and 10 secondary CIPO were included. Dilatation of the small intestine was the only finding in 38 patients; in the remaining, the compromise was associated with other segments, primarily the colon. Forty-nine patients underwent 65 surgeries, mainly exploratory laparotomies and colectomies. Intestinal manometry was performed on all patients; 4 “patterns” were observed: neuropathic (n = 26), myopathic (n = 3), mixed (n = 24), and a group without motor activity (n = 11). The most relevant findings were the complex migrating motor disorders and decreased frequency and propagation of contractions. The 9 patients who died had a severe myopathic compromise. Conclusions In our series, isolated small bowel compromise was the most common disorder. Neuropathic motor compromise was observed in most of the patients. Mortality was associated with severe myopathic compromise. (J Neurogastroenterol Motil 2017;23:273-280)

Background/Aims: No clear data have been established and validated regarding whether rectal retroflexion has an important and therapeutic impact. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the diagnostic yield and therapeutic impact of rectal retroflexion compared with straight view examination. Methods: A prospective single-blind study was conducted. Consecutive patients evaluated between October 2011 and April 2012 were included. Results: A total of 934 patients (542 women [58%]) were included. The mean age was 57.4±14.8 years. Retroflexion was successful in 917 patients (98.2%). Distinct lesions in the anorectal area were detected in 32 patients (3.4%), of which 10 (1%) were identified only on retroflex view and 22 (2.4%) on both straight and retroflex views. Of the 32 identified lesions, 16 (50%) were polyps, nine (28.1%) were angiodysplasias, six (18.8%) were ulcers, and one (3.1%) was a flat lesion. All 10 patients (1%) in whom lesions were detected only by rectal retroflexion showed a therapeutic impact. Conclusions: Rectal retroflexion has minimal diagnostic yield and therapeutic impact. However, its low rate of major complications and the possibility of detecting lesions undetectable by straight viewing justify its use.

Efforts aimed at reduction of fishing waste generated during the evisceration and filleting are scarce. The fishing waste is used in the production of low value-added products, such as flours or silages. It is important to visualize an alternative and profitable use of this waste, as it constitutes a serious environmental problem. This research determined the antioxidant properties of collagenous extracts of skin and galls of Oreochromis sp. The raw materials were characterized by proximal chemical analysis. Three treatments were applied to extract the collagen: salt-soluble collagen, acid-soluble collagen (ASC), and pepsin-hydrolyzed collagen (PHC). The collagenous fractions were hydrolyzed (0.1% pepsin). The recovered collagen yield and antioxidant activity were determined to hydrolyzed collagen (HC) and nonhydrolyzed collagen (NHC). The ASC skin showed the highest extraction yield (3.02%). For galls, only the PHC extraction was feasible (0.16%). Antioxidant analysis of NHC did not reveal radical scavenging activities. HC displayed a 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl %RSA of 22.58 (ASC skin) and 10.34% (PHC galls), and a 2,2′-azino-bis[3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid] %RSA of 30.40% (PHC skin) and 29.43% (PHC galls), respectively. The ASC skin and PHC gall extracts exhibited 94.40% and 81.54% in ferric-reducing antioxidant power, and 43.63 and 38.08 μg ascorbic acid equivalents per milli liter for total antioxidant capacity, respectively. The collagen extracts showed %RSA and chelation of pro-oxidant metal ions. Different mechanism of antioxidant action was identified for the extracts: radical scavengers for HC and metal ion chelators for NHC. In conclusion, red tilapia skin collagen is recommended as an active ingredient of nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals, or functional foods, for the identified bioactive properties.
