Phytoplasma Associated with Yellowing Disease of Washingtonia sp. in Kuwait

Yellowing disease of palms caused by phytoplasma is spreading in the Arabian Gulf region. Surveys were conducted to determine the occurrence of the disease. Electron and fluorescence microscopy, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) techniques were used to detect the phytoplasma associated with the yellowing disease of ornamental palm Washingtonia sp. grown in Kuwait. An accumulation of phytoplasmal DNA was observed by fluorescence microscopy in phloem tissues of diseased palms. Electron microscopy showed that phytoplasma cells were primarily confined to the phloemsieve elements of tissue samples collected from infected mature palms in the field. The pathogen was identified on the basis of molecular analysis using universal and specific nested primers in PCR amplifications. Prokaryotic 16S rDNA gene was detected in amplified PCR products. Nested PCR resulted in DNA amplification of 1.2 kbp fragment. This is the first report of a phytoplasmal rDNA gene identified from the putative causal pathogen of yellows in ornamental palms in the Arabian Gulf region.
SO2, NO2 and BTEX Concentrations in Educational and Industrial Areas: Field Measurements in Kuwait

Measurements of SO2, NO2 and benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes BTEX concentrations using passive tubes were carried out at five locations featuring educational and light industrial activities in south western Kuwait City during 2014. The five selected sites, chosen to be statistically representative of land use in the study area, were monitored to evaluate the impacts of traffic and light industrial activities on pollutant concentrations. The recorded mean concentrations of NO2, SO2 and BTEX were 40.3, 28.1 and 3.72 μg/m3, respectively. The lowest concentrations were recorded in the educational area. Comparisons between the measured concentrations and the applicable air quality standards from the Kuwait Environment Public Authority showed that the gas concentrations were lower than the allowable limits.
Identification of Luteovirus Nucleotide Sequences in Mild Yellow-Edge Diseased Strawberry Plants

The availability of nucleotide sequences of the coat protein gene of Potato leafroll virus (PLRV) permitted the construction of DNA primers that were utilized for cDNA synthesis. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) products of a 487 bp. and approximately 500 bp DNA fragments were amplified from nucleic acid extracts of PLRV-infected tissue and strawberry mild yellow-edge (SMYE) diseased strawberry tissue, respectively. The amplified DNA fragments were further differentiated by hybridization analysis with a CDNA probe for the coat protein gene of PLRV and restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis. These results suggest that a luteovirus is associated with the SMYE disease.

In this paper, we propose a diagnostic pattern selection method for Resistive Open Faults (RoFs) to handle the excessive power supply noise caused by IR drop. The main idea of the method is to sort out the risky patterns denoted by the detection patterns of the RoFs whose longest sensitized path have high IR drop from a pre-generated test set, and then generates the diagnostic patterns for RoFs by performing x-identification and xfilling process on the risky patterns. The originality of the method is to introduce the Simulated Annealing optimization algorithm to explore the best x-filling for the risky patterns. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our method.
