A review on thermochemical seasonal solar energy storage materials and modeling methods

In the current era, national and international energy strategies are increasingly focused on promoting the adoption of clean and sustainable energy sources. In this perspective, thermal energy storage (TES) is essential in developing sustainable energy systems. Researchers examined thermochemical heat storage because of its benefits over sensible and latent heat storage systems, such as higher energy density and decreased heat loss. Solar energy is a promising alternative among the numerous renewable energy sources. As a result, this study provides an overview of thermochemical heat storage materials, focusing on materials utilized by solar energy systems in buildings. The research examines the storage materials used in relevant studies and the models used to predict and enhance system performance.

To date, various techniques have been utilized to assess the contractility of cardiomyocytes and their response to drug-induced toxicity. However, these techniques are either invasive or involve complex fabrication methods and expertise. Here, we introduce the use of video-based analysis software to track the motion of cardiomyocytes and assess their contractility. The software, called “Tracker”, is freely available and this is the first attempt at using it for cardiac contractility measurement. We used the software to measure the contractile properties of cells cultured on a rigid substrate and two flexible polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrates having different elastic moduli day-wise up to eight days. Contractility was found to be highest in the most flexible substrate. Subsequently, the cardiotoxicity response of the cells on three different substrates was analyzed with verapamil. It was observed that the cells on rigid substrate were primarily affected by drug-induced toxicity, while the drug had a lesser impact on cells on the more flexible PDMS substrate. Evidently, the flexible substrate aided the maturation of cells and had lower drug toxicity, while the cells on PS could not fully mature. The assessment of cardiomyocytes using “Tracker” proved to be simple and reliable.

Benzoselenadiazole as the central acceptor unit with terminal donor unit of n-hexylbithiophene waschosen to design the symmetric donor-acceptor-donor (D–A–D) configuration based small organicchromophore, 4,7-bis(50-hexyl-[2,20-bithiophen]-5-yl)benzo[c][1,2,5]selenadiazole, RTh-BSe-ThR, forthe fabrication of solution-processed bulk-heterojunction organic solar cells (BHJ-OSCs). RTh-BSe-ThRchromophore showed assuring solubility in common organic solvents and exhibited wider absorption inthe visible region with an optical band gap (Egopt) of1.87 eV. Benzoselenadiazole unit with two nhexylbithiopheneunits exhibited an excellent electrochemical behavior with the highest occupiedmolecular orbital (HOMO) of5.38 eV and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of3.51 eV. The fabricated BHJ-OSCs with RTh-BSe-ThR:PC61BM (1:3, w/w) blend thinfilm displayed a powerconversion efficiency (PCE) of3.46% and a high value of short circuit current density (JSC) of11.20 mA/cm2. The enhancement in the photovoltaic parameters might be attributed to the significantimprovements in the interfacial area of bulk heterojunction which might enhance the light harvestingproperty and the shunt resistance of the blend thinfilms.

Finding alternative feeds, such as sesame hulls and Prosopis juliflora species can attenuate difficulties of feed shortage and reduce the cost of animal feed in arid and semi-arid countries. Thirty-two Black male kids with similar initial weights (BW = $16.7{\pm}0.80\;kg$) and $120{\pm}5\;d$ of age, were used to evaluate the effect of replacing barley grains and soybean meal with Prosopis juliflora pods (PJP) and sesame hulls (SH) on growth performance, digestibility and carcass and meat characteristics. Kids were equally divided into four dietary treatment groups for an 84-d fattening period. Treatment diets had similar crude protein (CP) and metabolizable energy (ME). The treatment groups were: (T1) no PJP nor SH, (T2) 10% PJP and 20% SH, (T3) 15% PJP and 15% SH, and (T4) 20% PJP and 10% SH. A tendency was detected (p<0.08) for dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), organic matter (OM) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) intakes that were greater for T2 than T3 and T4 while T1 was not different from all other treatment groups. Ether extract (EE) intake was the greatest (p<0.05) for T2 and the lowest for T1. Acid detergent fiber (ADF) intake was greater (p<0.05) for T2 than T1 while T3 and T4 were intermediate. Final live weight, average daily gain (ADG) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were comparable among different treatment groups. Digestibility of DM, OM, CP, NDF and ADF were similar among all treatment groups, however, EE digestibility was the lowest (p<0.05) for T1 when compared to other treatments. In addition, nitrogen intake, nitrogen in urine and retained and retention percentages were similar among all treatment groups. However, N loss in feces was higher (p<0.05) for T2 than T3 and T4 while T1 was intermediate. No differences were observed among treatment groups with respect to fasting live weight, hot and cold carcass weights, dressing-out percentages, mesenteric fat, visceral organs, carcass cuts percentages and carcass linear dimensions. No differences were also observed for dissected loin, leg, rack and shoulder tissues except in the total bone % for loin cuts and in the meat to bone ratio for rack cuts. T3 has the greatest total bone % and the lowest meat to bone ratio when compared to all other treatment groups. No differences were observed between treatment groups in all quality characteristics of the longissimus muscle. The present study demonstrates the potential of using PJP and SH for growing kids without adverse effects on growth performance, carcass characteristics and meat quality.
