This thesis investigates the two honorific forms (respectful and modest) of words from the book Hakai written in the 39th year of Meiji. The two honorific forms of the words were divided into three categories – alternation, addition, and conversion. The results of the research are as follows. In terms of using the respectful form of honorific words research found 299 examples using the alternation form of words – mostly from the word “ossyaru.” Furthermore, knowledge collected from the addition form shows “o” plus verbal stem plus Nasaru or Nasuru and “go” or “o” plus adjective stem were used throughout the book. Finally, the conversion form showed all forms followed the “te” pattern of auxiliary’s added respect. In terms of using the modest form of honorific words research found 75 examples using the alternation form of words generated from a variety of words. Two forms of addition were found. One, “o” ~ mousu e.g., “Onegaimousu,” two, “o” ~ suru e.g., “Ohanashisuru” are the two additions found in research. Lastly, dealing with the conversion form, investigation established “te” pattern of auxiliaries corresponding to the respectful form above; however, the modest form depends on who is giving or receiving.
