Vol.98 No.-

Family rites are performed rites by family in each important turning point of family members. Even though it is known as Gwanhonsangje, traditionally, there is also Tonglye like Yusajeuggo. Today, both Suyeonlye and Jagmyeonglye are also included. Name specifically identifies a person, has identitis, and naming has the meaning of social birth. As an important turning point of our lives, it has been an object of family rites from the past, so this thesis examined this. As the family rites related to naming, traditionally, there was Jagjarye included in Gwanlye. From the 1990s, Jagmyeonglye has also been carried out. Gwanlye which was the traditional coming of age ceremony included Jaseol and Jagmyeonglye of Ja. Even after Gwanlye was settled down in the early 16th century, it was carried out only by some of the upper class. Due to the early marriage and Danballyeong, Gwanlye gradually disappeared in the Japanese colonial era. However, because of the strong educational feature for getting equipped with adult’s character, it was revived as coming of age ceremony in 1999. However, separately from this, after the enforcement of Minjeogbeob, Gyeongmyeongsasang and Pihwi disappeared, and along with the disappearance of ja, Jagjarye also disappeared. Jagmyeonglye is the family rites that name a Bonmyeong to a young child. The history is long enough to be recorded in Jujagarye and traditional Garyeseo. Even though it is argued to be carried out in the Joseon Dynasty, it has not been verified. From the 1990s, Jagmyeonglye was included in family rites, which has still rarely been carried out yet. Jagmyeonglye, which includes both physical birth and naming was an important turning point of our lives, so it was an object of family rites. Therefore, it should be highly evaluated that Jagmyeonglye was included in family rites based on Garyeseo. For the vitalization of Jagmyeonglye, we also need modernization of Myeongcheob and detailed records of naming methods.

Vol.0 No.34

This study verified through the used sentences whether the word ‘日本", employed in the catchphrases in Japanese newspaper advertisements, plays the role of a linguistic sign with connotations. As a result, it is known that the connotation of the word ‘日本" serves as an ideological subject to be protected, saved and safeguarded, identified with the world as the supreme value, getting beyond Japan and the image based on the national value. The research further shows that ‘日本’ implies a stronger connotation when pronounced as ‘にっぽん’ than when pronounced as ‘にほん’, and in a sentence in which the state ideology of nationalism is strongly expressed, ‘日本 is pronounced as ‘にっぽん". The study also shows that the word ‘日本’ as a linguistic sign has developed into a myth through the interaction with the signs connected with each other.

Vol.0 No.51

This study began with a motif about how the body language for chest and belly expresses happy and sad feelings through some conceptual metaphor. In other words, from a cognitive point of view, we tried to approach the concept of abstract emotion in body language, which material and specific concepts were adopted as source areas to express happy and sad feelings. First of all, the body language for chest is more metaphorically used in emotions or emotions in a person than in other body parts, especially in Korean, where the metaphorical concept of happy emotions, or source areas, was less than the source areas of sad emotions. In contrast, in Japanese, the source of happy emotions was slightly larger than the source of sad emotions. And in the case of belly, the source area of happy emotion seems to be three concepts in Korean, while the source area of sad emotion is more than happy with six concepts. In the case of Japanese, unlike in Korea, the source area of happy emotions is somewhat greater than that of sad emotions. What’s interesting here is that there are fewer or fewer idioms associated with metaphorical concepts such as “instrument,” “dirt,” “money” and “enemy” than in Korea, in terms of Japan’s special society and commercial culture. This is seen as the result of a metaphorical expression that has long been customary in Japan’s unique historical, cultural and social environment.

1993 KSBB Journal Vol.25 No.1

The inhibitory effect of cacao bean husk (CBH) extract on glucosyltransferase(GTasc) from Streptococcus mutans B13 was investigated. Water solube extract from CBH showeda sarong inhibitory effect (88-89%) on GTase from Streptococcus mutans Bl3. GTase inhibitors from sequential extraction by hot water or water-methanol had the strongest inhibition. Sources, fermentation, and types of solvents and fumigation processes did not influence the effect. These active compounds proved to be polyphones through acid hydrolytic analysis of the precipitates by ammonium sulfate or ethanol and proteinase K. It was also confirmed by additional column chromatography of Sephadex G-50, Sephadex LH-20 and DEAE-Sephdex A-50.

Multimodality and cognitive mechanisms: A cognitive-semantics analysis of political cartoons <stay out of my hair>

Vol.35 No.1

This paper aims to explore multimodality within a framework of cognitive semantics by conducting a case study of political cartoons <stay out of my hair> with special focus on the optimal manifestations of conceptual metaphors (Lakoff and Johnson 1999) and blends (Fauconnier 1997) in them. It looks into the cartoons which have been published from January to August in 2017 to illustrate escalating tensions over the issue of developing nuclear weapons in North Korea between North Korea and the United States after Donald Trump was elected president of the United States. Total 26 relevant cartoons were collected from multiple public webpages, which use the original hairstyles of the political figures to satirize their political actions or to show conflicts and their unpleasant emotions. This study provides a qualitative analysis of five selected cartoons that represent the sub-types to clarify how hair constitutes the overall construal of the cartoon within a framework of cognitive semantics. It supports the claim that cognitive mechanisms such as conceptual metaphor and blending are not confined to verbal artefacts, but they are pervasive in multimodal manifestations since multimodal data as well as linguistic data are outcomes of human cognition (Dancygier and Vandelanotte 2017).

Vol.80 No.-

The central purpose of the current paper is to examine how Japanese style postpositions, sometimes called ‘particles’. have been used and changed in the Korean language. A set of six postpositions were selected for that purpose: ‘-kwaeuy’, ‘-e isseo(seo)’, ‘-eseoeuy’, ‘-robuteo’, ‘-roeuy’, and ‘–roseoeuy’. The data under analysis were collected from five national papers including Chosun Ilbo, Joongang Ilbo, Donga Ilbo, Hankuk Ilbo, and Seoul Daily. A total of 20,000 sentences were used for analysis: 1,000 sentences from each paper at four different times –the 1990’s, the 2000’s, the 2010’s and 2019. It was found that the postposition ‘–kwaeuy' topped the list of frequency at all the four different times followed by ‘–eseoeuy', ‘-robuteo', ‘-e isseoseo', ‘-roseoeuy' and ‘–roeuy'. In terms of diachronic differences, the greatest gap was found between the 1990’s and the 2000’s. Overall, the use of Japanese style postposition has decreased significantly in 2019 compared to 1990s; therefore, the awareness in Korean language purification seems to have increased in medias. It was also found that there existed a big difference in the frequency of use of these postpositions between Seoul Daily(169) and Hankuk Ilbo(93). Chosun Ilbo marked the greatest rate of reduction, 91%, between the 1990’s and 2019.
