In order to investigate the distribution of Legionella spp. from cooling tower waters of public establishments in Seoul, we examined the 637 cooling tower waters of public establishments(building 220, Hotel 111, Hospital 103, department and shopping centers 103, and others 110) from 1994 to 1998. Of 637 waters tested, the average detection rate of legionella in cooling tower waters of public establishments was 15.7% and according to the establishment, buildings 15.5%, hotels 11.7%, hospitals 12.6%, departments and shopping centers 19.4%, and others 20.0%. Of 637 waters tested, 17 waters(2.7%) were detected over 100,000 CFU/L, 54 waters(8.5%) 10,000∼100,000 CFU/L and 29 waters(4.6%) less than 10,000 CFU/L. Of 100 isolates from cooling towers of public establishments from 1994 to 1998, 95 isolates were L. pneumophila and of them, 83 isolates(87.4%) were serogroup 1. The estimated number of L. pneumophila serogroup 1 isolated from cooling tower waters of public establishments was 6.5×10 exp(4) CFU/L and that in serogroup 4 was 1.8×10 exp(4) CFU/L.

This study was conducted to investigate the characteristics of conversion and residue for two EBDCs fungicides (mancozeb and metiram) and their metabolite, ethylenethiourea (ETU) under laboratory conditions. The sampling on the pesticides was done at 0, 1, 2, 5, 7, 9, 12, 15, 19, 22 and 26 days. The amounts of their residues and ETU were analyzed with an HPLC-DAD. The average recoveries were 86.9±4.3 and 90.2±8.0% for mancozeb, 85.2±2.4 and 98.6±1.6% for metiram, and 64.1±3.4 and 80.0±4.6% for ETU. The half-lives of mancozeb and metiram were 7.5 and 27.8 day, respectively. The conversion rates of mancozeb and metiram to ETU ranged from 4.7 to 67.2% and from 7.5 to 34.6%, respectively. These results may be different under the real environmental conditions. Therefore, following many studies are recommended to make the criteria for applying the use and safety for mancozeb and metiram.

The unripe fruit of Poncirus trifoliata Raf has been used for the treatment of allergic disease. Recently it was reported that the fruit inhibits passive cutaneous anaphylaxis and histamine release at mast cell. Type I immediate hypersensitivity of anaphylactic type is caused by released mediate chemical at mast cell. Histamine is also known as one of potent mediate chemical. Also release of mediate chemical is affected by specific stimulation of IgE combined with mast cell. Activation of mast cell is known to be stimulated by compound 48/80 and inhibited by increase of cAMP. In this experiment, the effect of water extract of Poncirus trifoliata Raf fruit (PT) on a histamine release, cAMP concentration and IgE production was measured. Compound 48/80 was administrated to the mouse peritoneal cell which was pretreated with PT. PT dosedependently inhibited histamine release at peritoneal mast cell and the serum level of histamine induced by compound 48/80. PT also instantly increased cAMP level of peritoneal mast cell right after it was added and the level gradually decreased. Production of IgE induced by antigens at mouse peritoneal cell was inhibited by PT. The IgE synthesis is induced by IL-4 and it is known that lipopolysaccharide(LPS) plus IL-4 cause an increase in IgE secretion by murine B cells. The effects of PT inhibited the production of IgE activated by LPS plus IL-4 at human U266B1 cells. These results indicate that PT has antiallergic activity by Inhibition of IgE production from B cells and histamine release by increase of cAMP.

DOS and NaCl aerosol particles with geometric mean diameter of 0.1~3.0 ㎛, geometric standard deviation of 1.1~1.8 and total number concentration of 450 ~ 400 particles/cm³ were used to determine collection efficiencies of a duct-type wet scrubber with respect to particle size. The tested operating variables included air velocity and water injection rate. It was shown from the experimental results that the collection efficiencies increased with increasing water injection rate and decreasing air velocity. It was also seen that the collection efficiency of the Duct-type wet scrubber is mainly governed by the mechanism of inertial impaction.
