The purpose of this study is to analyze how the major income sources of elderly households affect the elderly’s life satisfaction and active aging. This study examines the research model using the structural equation using the data of the survey on the elderly in 2014 at the Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs. The results of the study are as follows. First, the proportion and amount of public transfer income among the elderly’s income sources was high, mainly leisure, cultural activities, social activities and group activities, and their economic status and health status satisfaction were low, while their spouse, children, Community satisfaction was relatively high. Second, the difference of each income according to the general characteristics of survey subjects is as follows. In the cases of earned income, business income, asset income, and public transfer income, the income of each man was higher than that of women, The higher the health, the higher the income. Third, the increase of old age earning income negatively affects the life satisfaction, but life satisfaction increased as asset income and public transfer income increase. And, as the elderly earned income, asset income, and public transfer income increased, they were more involved in activities related to active aging. Fourth, the increase of earned income in old age had a positive effect on active aging but negatively on life satisfaction. Fifth, the results of analyzing after setting individual models using gender and age were different between male and female. First of all, the life satisfaction of the elderly should be influenced not only by the economic support but also by the policy support for the aging activities since the economic factors are influenced on the life satisfaction through the aging activities.

The purpose of this paper is to address the problem of the semantic errors involving the English relative what and interrogative what that appear in English-to-Korean translation patterns. Despite the semantic and syntactic differences between the two forms, they are used unclearly in translated texts. This paper accounts for the properties of and differences between the two usages of what. It utilizes the approaches by some linguists to demonstrate those properties and differences. First, we investigate how both types of what are the translated texts into Korean. The relative what is translated in Korean texts as bounded nouns, but also as unbounded nouns. However, we find some instances that are properly translated. In particular, the rate of improperly translated relative what is higher than that of interrogative what. Moreover, we show that semantic ambiguities and translation errors appear because the specific differences between the English relative what and the interrogative what are not made clear in English-to-Korean translated texts. This produces unsatisfying translation results, which is far from the original writer’s intentions. We apply the approaches to sentences in which the two forms are difficult to distinguish. We have found that the approaches each can be effective. The problem of ensuring the faithfulness and readability is not easily solved, but this paper shows that there are certain alternative grammatical mechanisms that can be employed. We conclude that it is poor translation practice to omit the original phrases arbitrarily to make target Korean texts readable. Translators need to try to prevent distortions of source English texts by, for example, reducing the occurrence semantic errors.
