In this study, the effects of variations in phosphorus content of electro-less nickel coating on mechanical properties of carbon fibers-reinforced composites were studied. The surface properties of nickel-coated carbon fibers were studied by XPS, SEM, and EDS measurement. Mechanical properties of the composites were investigated using inter laminar shear strength (ILSS) and impact test. As a result, mechanical properties were enhanced with suitable amount of phosphorus content. This result can be concluded that the mechanical properties of epoxy matrix composites can be controlled by reliable phosphorus content in the nickel-coated carbon fibers.

In order to develop the high quality EMI-SE materials for protective composite, Ni-plated glass fiber fabrics (Ni-GFFs) were prepared by an electroless method. Effects of post heat-treatment conditions on EMISE and mechanical properties of Ni-GFFs/epoxy composites were also investigated. The morphologies and structural properties of Ni-GFFs were measured by SEM and XRD. It was found that the crystallinity of Ni particles was increased after post heat-treatment. It was also found that the EMI-SE of composites enhanced with increasing post heattreatment time. This result concludes that the EMI-SE of the composites can be enhanced according to the microstructure of Ni in the Ni-GFFs/epoxy composites.
