Vol.21 No.4

The taxonomic review of the family Trachipteridae was carried out based on the Trachipterus ishikawae (7 specimens), Zu cristatus (4 specimens), Desmodema polystictum (2 specimens)collected from the East Sea, South Sea and adjacent waters of Jeju Island of Korea from June 2006 to August 2008. Among them, D. polystictum was revealed as an unrecorded species from Korea, being characterized by the following characters: the ventral edge smooth; body color silvery white with a lot of large dark rounded spot. We proposed the new Korean name of the genus Desmodema as “Jeomtu-ra-chi-sog”, D. polystictum as “Jeom-tu-ra-chi”. Z. cristatus has a elongated first six dorsal fin and pelvic fin rays. T. ishikawae has a row of sharp tubercles along the ventral edge, and straightly elongated body form. In meristic characters, the number of dorsal fin rays were 178~195 in T. ishikawae, 137~148 in Z. cristatus and 125~130 in D. polystictum, the number of vertebrae were well distinguished among three species; T. ishikawae (80~83), D. polystictum (72~74) and Z. cristatus (65~68).

Vol.46 No.5

Two leptocephali [total length (TL) 68.2-80.5 mm] from the family Ophichthidae, collected from the waters south of Jeju Island, Korea, were identified using morphology. The two ophichthid leptocephali were identified as belonging to the genus Ophichthus based on morphological characters: 131-132 myomeres; nine gut swellings; dorsal fin origin above the middle of the body; five postanal pigments present from the anus to the caudal margin. Ultimately, both leptocephali were identified as Ophichthus asakusae, as the total number of myomeres was consistent with those of adult O. asakusae. Here, we first describe the morphological characteristics of the O. asakusae leptocephalus, and suggest diagnostic characters for leptocephali belonging to the genus Ophichthus.

Vol.47 No.6

Seventeen specimens of leptocephali [9.8-44.5 mm total length (TL)], of the family Ophichthidae, were collected from southeastern waters off Jeju Island and the Korea–Japan intermediate zone, and identified by means of morphology and genetics. These specimens were identified as belonging to the subfamily Ophichthinae based on various combinations of morphological characters: 211-215 total myomeres; 7 gut swellings; 2 liver lobes connected with the gall bladder on the second lobe; 6-7 postanal pigments present from anus to caudal margin. An analysis of the partial 12S rRNA sequences (849 base pairs) of mitochondrial DNA showed that our specimens must be Ophisurus macrorhynchos because their sequences were concordant with those of the adult O. macrorhynchos (genetic distance = 0.000). Furthermore, their total myomeres were consistent with those of the O. macrorhynchos adult. This is the first time that the morphological characteristics of O. macrorhynchos leptocephali have been described for Korean waters, and we suggest diagnostic characteristics for the genus Ophisurus leptocephali. We hypothesize that one of the spawning grounds of O. macrorhynchos is located in the southeastern part of Jeju Island.

Larval Distribution Pattern of Muraenesox cinereus (Anguilliformes: Muraenesocidae) Leptocephali in Waters Adjacent to Korea

2015 Ocean science journal Vol.50 No.3

To understand the transport and recruitment processes of the daggertooth pike conger, Muraenesox cinereus, in the marginal seas of East Asia, we investigated the distribution pattern, estimated spawning areas and periods, and recruitment mechanisms of M. cinereus, based on 51 individuals of leptocephali collected from Korean waters during 2010–2014. Back-calculated hatching dates, determined from the daily incremental growth rates of the otoliths, indicated that the spawning period for M. cinereus was during July– September. The size range of M. cinereus leptocephali collected offshore of Jeju Island and southeast of the Korea-Japan intermediate zone was 16.6–20.9 mm TL (age, 18–23 d). We hypothesize that one of the spawning grounds of M. cinereus is located offshore in the East China Sea. In Korean waters, the ages and body lengths of M. cinereus leptocephali increased northward from latitude 31°30'N to 34°40'N, with metamorphosis occurring at latitude 34°40'N. Therefore, we surmised that the hatched preleptocephali of M. cinereus were transported from offshore areas in the East China Sea to Jeju Island and the Korea Strait (KS) by the Kuroshio and Tsushima Warm Current.

Molecular Phylogeny of the Families Pleuronectidae and Poecilopsettidae (PISCES, Pleuronectiformes) from Korea, with a Proposal for a New Classification

2016 Ocean science journal Vol.51 No.2

A new classification of the Korean pleuronectids was proposed based on a molecular phylogeny using specimens collected from Korea (including some Japanese specimens) between 2008 and 2013. A molecular phylogeny based on partial sequences of the two mitochondrial DNA regions (COI and 16S rRNA) supported the reciprocal monophyly of the three genera, Cleisthenes, Pleuronectes and Pseudopleuronectes. We also found that the genus Poecilopsetta is clearly distinct from Pleuronectidae at the family level. Therefore, the previous classification of the Korean pleuronectids should be changed as follows; two families (Pleuronectidae and Poecilopsettidae), 18 genera, and 26 species. Further research is required to resolve the taxonomic uncertainty of the five species in the genus Limanda, which clustered into two clades in our analysis.

Vol.45 No.5

One leptocephalus (TL 59.9 mm) from the family Ophichthidae collected from Jeju Island, Korea, was identified using morphological and molecular methods. Our ophichthid leptocephalus was identified as belonging to the genus Muraenichthys based on morphological characters: 157 myomeres; the origin of the dorsal fin located a little in front of the anus; a distinct melanophore present on the opercle; and six gut swellings present. An analysis of 886 base pairs of the 12S rRNA mtDNA sequences showed that our leptocephalus must be Muraenichthys gymnopterus, because its sequences were concordant with those of an adult M. gymnopterus (d=0.001) and next to those of Muraenichthys sp. leptocephalus (d=0.034). Here, we are the first to describe the morphological characteristics of the M. gymnopterus leptocephalus.

New Record of Scolecenchelys fuscogularis (Anguilliformes: Ophichthidae) Leptocephali from Korea, as Revealed by Morphological and Molecular Analyses

2015 Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences Vol.18 No.1

Three leptocephali (22.2, 22.7, 56.0 mm in total length) collected from the East/Japan Sea were identified by morphological and genetic analyses as belonging to the genus Scolecenchelys (Anguilliformes, Ophichthidae). Morphologically, the specimens were characterized by 148-158 myomeres, 10 gut swellings, dorsal fin origin above middle of the body, and 6 postanal melanophores between the anus and the caudal margin. An analysis of an 849-base pair 12S rRNA sequence of mitochondrial DNA showed that sequences are concordant with those of adult Scolecenchelys fuscogularis (genetic distance = 0.001). Furthermore total number of myomeres is consistent with the total number of vertebrae in adult S. fuscogularis. This study provides the first description of the morphological characteristics of S. fuscogularis leptocephali and their variations with size. The Korean name of S. fuscogularis is “Ga-neun-mul-baem”, established by Ji et al. (2012).

Four newly reported ophichthid leptocephali species revealed by mitochondrial 12S rDNA, with implications of their occurrence in Korea

2012 Animal cells and systems Vol.16 No.5

Four species of ophichthid leptocephali were identified using 12S rDNA sequences, and their morphological descriptions were first provided based on six individuals (S1S3,M1, and E1E2) collected from the East Sea and the Korea Strait between September 2008 and October 2010. Mitochondrial 12S rDNA 859861 base pairs of ophichthid leptocephali were compared with those of 16 ophichthids adult and 2 outgroups (Anguilla japonica and Conger myriaster). Leptocephali of S1 and E1 were very closely clustered with adult of Scolecenchelys borealis (D0.002) and Echelus uropterus (D0.000), respectively. However, leptocephali of S2S3 andM1 were slightly far clustered with leptocephalus of S1 (D0.006) and adult of Muraenichthys gymnopterus (0.034), respectively. We believe that S1 and E1 are S. borealis and E. uropterus, respectively, in which the former is unrecorded species in Korea. However, S2S3 and M1 may be undescribed species belonging to genus Scolecenchelys and Muraenichthys, respectively, because total numbers of myomeres for S2S3 (148158) and M1 (151) were not consistent with total numbers of vertebrae or distribution for any adult of Scolecenchelys spp. and Muraenichthys spp. in the world. We propose the new Korean name ‘Dong-hae-mul-baem’ for S. borealis.

Vol.48 No.3

We followed the development of Pacific herring Clupea pallasii larvae after natural hatching in Korean coastal waters off Dadaepo, where the water temperature was 9°C. Twenty days after hatching, the larvae had (i) reached a total length (TL) of 10.8–12.2 mm, (ii) developed 9–11 dorsal fin rays, and (iii) branched melanophores along the dorsal line of the gut in the anterior half of the body and along the posterior half of the dorsal and ventral line. Thirty days after hatching, the larvae had reached 12.2–13.5 mm TL, and the number of dorsal fin rays had increased to 13–14. Thirty-five days days after hatching, the larvae had reached 14.0–14.7 mm TL, and the posterior ends of their notochords had begun to flex upward. Forty-five days days after hatching, the larvae had (i) reached 15.6–15.9 mm TL, (ii) a complete set of dorsal fin rays (15–16), (iii) 12–13 anal fin rays, and (iv) branched melanophores along the dorsal part of the lateral surfaces of the head behind the caudal terminus. Preflexion, flexion and postflexion stage larvae had TL values of 13.5, 14.0–15.3 mm, and 15.6–15.9 mm, respectively.
