서양의 소리, 경성의 공간을 침투하다: 호텔과 백화점에서의 서양음악과 그 영향

음악은 우리의 삶에 늘 존재해왔다. 이 연구는 그러한 음악 문화를 담아내는 장소를 탐색하기 위해 경성의 일상 공간을 추적한다. 식민지조선의 수도 경성은 근대의 특징이 가장 두드러지는 도시로, 그러한 장소성을 살펴볼 수 있는 다양한 공간이 존재했다. 이 공간들은 ‘서구’라는 모티프를 접점으로 음악, 음식, 의복, 에티켓(Etiquette), 언어 등 갖가지 서양의 것을 사용하여 경성인들에게 일상과 대비되는 별천지를 맛보게 하는 동시에 잠시나마 식민지의 팍팍한 현실을 잊도록 만들었다. 특히 호텔과 백화점 등의 최고급 시설들은 서구화의 최절정을 과시하며 근대의 위용을 드러내는데 서양의 사운드를 활용하였다. 본연의 목적이 있는 이러한 공간에서 서양의 음악을 적극적으로 사용한 이유는 서양음악에서 느껴지는 품격 때문이었다. 이 연구에서는 호텔과 백화점을 중심으로 경성이라는 도시의 일상과 경성인들의 청각에 서양음악이 자리 잡아가는 현장에 집중한다. 일상에서 체험하는 음악 경험은 대중의 청각에 변화를 가져왔다. 조선의 소리에 익숙했던 조선인들의 귀에 점차 서양음악이 거슬리지 않게 되었고, 얼마 지나지 않아 오히려 서양의 사운드에 더 익숙해졌다. 우리의 청각을 지배하는 서양음악의 무게는 우리가 생각하는 것보다 훨씬 강하다. 어찌 보면 현재 우리가 음악적 모국어를 서양음악으로 여기는 것도 식민지조선에서부터 익숙해진 서양의 소리 때문일 것이다. Music has always been in the space of human life. Considering space as a basin of music, this study investigates the role of space of daily life in music culture in Gyeongseong, the capital of Colonial Joseon. The city had many spaces that manifest modernist characteristics. Based on a motif of ‘the west’, these spaces was filled with the so-called western music, food, costumes, etiquette, language, etc., which allowed people exotic experience and made them temporarily free from tough life. By using western sounds, hotels and department stores were considered as the zenith of westernization and an exemplar of modernity. It is because acoustic features of the western music signify elegance. In this context, the current study focuses on hotels and department stores to understand how western music settled down in daily life and was familiarized to ears of people in Gyeongseong. Music flowing out from modern buildings provided new auditory experience to the public in Gyeongseong. For people who had been accustomed to sound of Joseon, western music was not annoying any longer and even became familiar with the western sound. Western music that governs our auditory experience is powerful. The fact that, for most of us, western music is regarded as a mother tongue reflects familiarization processes of western music since colonial Joseon.

구인-구직 매칭의 효율화 방안: 한국의 외국인근로자 제도에의 적용

본 논문은 취업알선방법이 근로자의 조기퇴사율에 얼마만큼 영향을 미치는지 통계학적 기법을 이용하여 분석한다. 이를 위하여 본 연구진은 한국의 외국인노동자 도입 제도에 관련한 전수 행정 통계 자료를 분석하였다. 그 이유는, 일반적인 일자리와는 달리, 외국인노동자 도입제도의 경우 한국정부가 외국인 선발과 한국 기업간의 알선 과정을 감독하기 때문에 관련된 자세한 통계 정보가 수집되어 있어, 엄밀한 연구가 가능하였기 때문이다. 본 연구진은 현재의 외국인 근로자와 한국 기업을 매칭하는 방식이 개선의 여지가 있음을 보였다. 또한, 본 연구진이 제안하는 대안적인 알고리즘을 사용할 경우 1년미만의 조기 퇴사율을 약 45% 감소시키는 것을 발견하였다. 외국근로자들의 조기 퇴사는 한국기업과 행정업무 차원에서 상당한 부담을 초래하며, 외국인들의 입장에서도 실직의 위험에 노출되는 등 위험 요소로 볼 수 있다. 이를 감안할 때 본 연구진이 제안하는 대안적인 알고리즘을 시험적으로 도입해볼 현실적 의의가 있다고 판단된다. This research investigates the role of worker-firm matching algorithms in accounting for early job separation rates. For this purpose, we examine Korea’s temporary foreign worker program in which the government classifies firms by priority level and matches them with foreign workers on the basis of their stated preferences. Using administrative data, we examine predictors for the job separation rates and propose alternative matching methods using serial dictatorship. Our simulation results show that alternative matching methods can substantially reduce job separation rates, thereby suggesting a possible improvement of the Korean program.

외교전문가들과 정책결정자들은 오바마 행정부가 지난 8년간 추진해 온 아시아 재균형(rebalancing) 정책의 실체와 효과에 대해 여전히 논쟁중이다. 구체적으로 미국 외교정책변화로서의 “아시아 회귀”(Pivot to Asia)는 단순한 레토릭(rhetoric)이란 비판이 가시지 않고 있는 것이다. 역사적으로 볼 때 미국 대통령의 외교정책 변화는 의회의 예산 조정이나 정부 부처 개편 등으로 뒷받침될 때 비로소 미국 정치의 현실로 자리매김하게 된 경우가 많다. 미국의 경우 행정부가 추진하는 외교정책 변화의 실질적 성공을 위해서는 의회의 동의와 협력이 필수적이기 때문이다. 본 논문은 오바마 행정부의 아시아 재균형 정책의 구체적 내용과 관련하여 미국 의회 관점에서 재조명해 보고자 한다. 특히 경제, 안보, 외교 영역으로 구분하여 어떤 법안들이 의회에 제출되었는지 살펴봄으로써 오바마 행정부의 아시아 재균형 정책이 단순한 선언적 의미에 그치는 것인지 아니면 미국의 대외정책 기본 방향을 수정하는 실체적 의미를 내포하고 있는지 고찰해 보고자 한다. Foreign policy experts and policy makers are still questioning the substances and effects of the Obama administration`s “Pivot to Asia” policy. Many suspect that US policy shift towards the Asia-Pacific region is not a real change but rhetorical positioning. American political history confirms the fact that presidential foreign policy initiatives become political realities only after the United States Congress support the administration through budget increase or organizational restructuring. It is because congressional advice and consent are critical for any new successful foreign policy changes in the United States. This article revisits the Obama administration`s rebalancing strategies through a lens of congressional policy making. With a focus on the economy, security, and diplomacy, we examine whether US “Pivot to the Pacific” is a myth or real.

Massive multiplayer online role playing game (MMORPG)은 국내 게임에서 큰 비중을 차지하는 게임 장르이다. MMORPG에서 유저 이탈 예측은 중요한 과제 중 하나이다. 인게임 결제가 수익 비중이 높기에 유저 잔존율이 서비스 수명 및 수익과 깊이 연관되기 때문이다. 만약, 특정 유저의 이탈을 사전에 예측할 수 있다면 프로모션을 통해 해당 유저의 잔존을 유도할 수 있을 것이다. 따라서, 이탈 예측 문제에서는 예측의 정확도도 중요하지만 이탈의 징후를 얼마나 빠르게 파악할 수 있는지 또한 중요하다. 본 논문에서는 이탈 징후를 조기에 탐지하기 위하여, 유저별 잔존 확률을 일별로 예측하고 이 예측된 확률 값들을 활용하여 유저 이탈 징후를 조기에 파악하는 방법을 제안한다. 이를 위해, 국내 게임사의 유저 로그 데이터로 여러 모형을 학습하고 유저별 잔존 확률을 구하여 잔존 확률의 변화 패턴에 대한 분석을 통해 이탈 가능성이 높은 유저를 조기에 감지할 수 있는 경험적 규칙을 보인다. 최종적으로, 성능 평가 결과를 통해 기존에 접속일을 기반으로 한 규칙보다 제시한 규칙을 이용할 시 이탈 유저를 조기에 감지할 수 있음을 확인한다. 추가적으로, 유저가 이탈하기 전 시점에 게임 접속 중 유저 이탈을 예측하는 방법과 유저의 게임 스타일에 따른 프로모션 방안을 제시한다. Massive multiplayer online role playing game (MMORPG) is a common type of game these days. Predicting user churn in MMORPG is a crucial task. The retention rate of users is deeply associated with the lifespan and revenue of the service. If the churn of a specific user can be predicted in advance, targeted promotions can be used to encourage their stay. Therefore, not only the accuracy of churn prediction but also the speed at which signs of churn can be detected is important. In this paper, we propose methods to identify early signs of churn by utilizing the daily predicted user retention probabilities. We train various deep learning and machine learning models using log data and estimate user retention probabilities. By analyzing the change patterns in these probabilities, we provide empirical rules for early identification of users at high risk of churn. Performance evaluations confirm that our methodology is more effective at detecting high risk users than existing methods based on login days. Finally, we suggest novel methods for customized marketing strategies. For this purpose, we provide guidelines of the percentage of accessed users who are at risk of churn.
