Speech Rhythm Metrics for Automatic Scoring of English Speech by Korean EFL Learners

Knowledge in linguistic rhythm of the target language plays a major role in foreign language proficiency. This study attempts to discover valid rhythm features that can be utilized in automatic assessment of non-native English pronunciation. Eight previously proposed and two novel rhythm metrics are investigated with 360 English read speech tokens obtained from 27 Korean learners and 9 native speakers. It is found that some of the speech-rate normalized interval measures and above-word level metrics are effective enough to be further applied for automatic scoring as they are significantly correlated with speakers' proficiency levels. It is also shown that metrics need to be dynamically selected depending upon the structure of target sentences. Results from a preliminary auto-scoring experiment through a Multi Regression analysis suggest that appropriate control of unexpected input utterances is also desirable for better performance.

This paper describes a method of designing a pronunciation dictionary which contains an optimal number of pronunciation variants for each word entry. The two key processes, generation and selection of variants, are designed to be performed automatically so that the final version of pronunciation dictionary can be practically used in speech recognition systems. For generation of variants both prescriptive and descriptive rule extraction methods are employed. First, various optional phonological processes are extracted from literature. Second, phone strings obtained by hand labelling are compared with base-form pronunciation strings and the systematic differences are set as rules. After generation of as many variants as possible, it is determined whether each variant deserves to be kept in the dictionary through relative frequency measure and heuristic decision-making criteria. Through experiments, the variant dictionary is found to play a meaningful role in enhancing performance of automatic speech recognition.

This study aims to introduce a way of verifying Korean phonological and phonetic processes using Automatic Speech Recognition techniques. It attempts to tackle the problems of the traditional ways in which variability and optionality of various processes are not dealt with properly. There are a few separate stages First, an automatic phone recogniser is constructed. The Hidden Markov Model (HMM) statistical recognition technique is employed to construct a Korean phone recogniser. Second. a target process is selected for verification. In the current study, the well-known Korean lenis stop voicing rule was chosen, as the traditional phonological description of this rule has been found to be problematic. Then the relevant speech data tokens which contain the segments located in the environment of voicing rule application, are selected from a corpus. A relatively large amount of speech recognition corpus is used instead of highly controlled speech data artificially designed for a specific phonetic experiment. Consequently, automatic statistical analyses. rather than intuitive judgment, are also adopted and that performance deterioration caused by inevitable errors of the phone recogniser can be alleviated thanks to the statistical averaging effect. After the recogniser is run on the data tokens. the binary evaluation results (ie., whether the rule has applied or not) are collected and interpreted through statistical parameters. It is revealed that there are many cases of phonetic outputs realised without having been influenced by the rule even though they are subject to the rule application environments. This fact suggests that the Korean lenis stop voicing rule need to be reinvestigated and re-described. Though only one rule has been under consideration in this research, many other phonological rules and phonetic constraints can be verified in the same way. It is especially meaningful that the quantitative method of speech technology can be utilized in verifying linguistic or phonetic phenomena.
한국인 영어 학습자의 발음 정확성 자동 측정 방법에 대한 연구

The purpose of this research is to develop a device that can automatically measure pronunciation accuracy of English speech produced by Korean learners of English. Pronunciation accuracy will be measured mainly in two areas; suprasegmental and segmental areas. In suprasegmental area, intonation and word stress of Korean English learners will be traced and compared with those of native speakers by way of statistical methods using tilt parameters. Durations of phones are also examined to measure speakers" fluency of their pronunciations. In doing so, statistical duration modelling from a large speech database using CART will be used. For segmental measurement of pronunciation accuracy, acoustic probability of a phone, which is a byproduct of the forced alignment, will be a basis of scoring the accuracy. The final score will be a feedback to the learners to improve their pronunciation.

This paper presents a method of automatically assessing non-native speech produced by Korean learners of English. After an input utterance is processed by an automatic aligner to produce information on phoneme and word boundaries, the key modules are designed to output separate scores in each level of segmentals and prosody. For segmental evaluation, the HMM log likelihood scoring method has been adopted to properly compare input speech with native pronunciation. For prosodic scoring, rhythm metrics are employed to capture the rhythm characteristics of the learners`` native language that are expected to remain in their English utterances. The results of correlation analyses between the automatic scores and human raters`` scores suggest that the proposed method can be further applied to enhance performance of pronunciation self-education tools for EFL learners.

English texts of four different types(News interview, TV soap, Animation film, & Newspaper article) are analysed to examine whether their word and phoneme distribution differs depending upon each text type. The data are collected from publically available internet resources. Two stages of pre-processing have been conducted: text-processing and letter-to-phoneme conversion. In the first stage, each type of texts is converted into the format in which all the expressions of numbers and symbols are represented with the plain spelled out vocabulary items. In the second stage, all the words are converted into the relevant phonemes. A pronunciation dictionary and supplementary rules are employed for automatic conversion of texts. The results show that there are notable differences of word frequency between texts of different types. In terms of phoneme distribution, however, no considerable characteristics for each type has been found although some general characteristics for all the types have been observed.
