Objectives Temporomandibular Joint Balancing Medicine (TBM) is a relatively new approach to the temporomandibular joint(TMJ) perceived as a key to the whole-body balance. This study aimed to briefly review concepts, history, and research reports on TBM with a focus on the yin-yang balance concept. Methods A narrative review was performed regarding TBM referring to published literature. Results TBM encompassed a variety of innovative clinical techniques for evaluation and improvement of the balance of the TMJ, nervous system, and meridian system featuring the integration between TMJ and body. Its target ranged from diseases to subclinical functional imbalances. TBM harnessed the postural balance of TMJ as a central tool to manipulate postural proprioception and thereby stimulate the innate healing mechanism of the whole body. Conclusions TBM was based on the concept of yin-yang balance and provided an integrated approach to disease treatment as well as to the improvement of subclinical health conditions.

Applied Kinesiology (AK) is an evaluation system on the functional balance and integration of the body. Functional aspects of the triad of health are evaluated through muscle testing to see if the balance and integration is in an optimal status or is influenced by a given environmental stimulation. Triad of health refers to the structural, chemical, and psychological aspects of the body. Muscle testing in AK is a functional neurological assessment of muscular response to a given environmental stimulation in a given individual. Meridian system and stomatognathic system as in TMJ balancing medicine serve as one of the theoretical basis of AK. This article reviews core concepts of AK, discusses yin-yang balance medicine perspectives and clinical applications of it.

Functional neurology is a function-oriented clinical neurology with a focus on the viability, functionality, and balance of the neurologic system, which may be considered as a form of yin-yang balance medicine like Korean medicine. While it incorporates knowledge systems such as developmental neurology, neuropsychology, comparative neuroanatomy, and others, it views the neurologic system and the body as an individually different, self-regulating mechanism with the help of the active balancing mechanism within the nervous system and between the individual and the environment, which view is at the core of its effort to improve and serve the human dignity based on the best possible functioning nervous system. This article reviews core concepts of the functional neurology, discusses yin-yang balance medicine perspectives and clinical applications of it.

Objectives: Functional Cerebrospinal Therapy (FCST) is a new physiologic therapeutics developed in Korea as a meridian yinyang balance approach. The theory of yinyang balance has been at the core of health enhancement approach of meridian and acupuncture medicine ever since its start. Methods: Introductory overview of FCST is presented in relation with meridian yinynag balance theory. Results: As the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and related tissues have direct interconnection with brainstem proprioceptive or motor systems and the face is where all the meridians converge, FCST applies a fine adjustment of the posture of TMJ as a treatment tool for neurologic conditions or meridian imbalances. Conclusions: Highly sophisticated diagnostic and therapeutic techniques to adjust various subset aspects of yinyang balance are developed within FCST, which is supposed to be one of major contributions to natural healing.

Positional Release Techniques (PRTs) are an umbrella term for manual therapies harnessing spontaneous musculoskeletal balancing mechanism of the body facilitated by finding and maintaining therapeutic position. PRT has its origin in the Strain Counterstrain (SCS) technique by Dr. Jones but encompasses diverse related techniques that stemmed off from the SCS. PRT emphasizes postural balance within the body and innate healing potential of the body including the postural balance of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). This study briefly reviews concepts, history, and contemporary study reports on PRT with a focus on the yin-yang balance based approach of PRT.

This study developed the movement of oriental medicine. It also found similar feature points of contact by combining Western Olympus gods and the five lines of yin and yang. These characteristics make it useful and interesting for the West, the East, and all classes. QMu, developed by combining Yin and Yang Five Elements with Greek and Roman mythology, has three characteristics. It is the breathing method that accompanies contraction and relaxation of the first muscle. Second, we use the principle of yin and yang. The movement of yin and yang reflects the characteristics of Apollo, the sun's god, and Artemis, the moon's god, which is a symbol of yin. The third uses the principle of five lines. The movements of the Five Elements help participants regain balance between their bodies and minds by experiencing the characteristics and emotional expressions of each god in Wood (Thursday), Fire (Tue), Gold (Metal), and Water (Water). The program was developed in the hope of experiencing harmony between the body and mind, while also making the body feel a deep bond as a part of nature, promoting emotional and psychological changes, and promoting health and well-being.

중풍(中風) 편마비환자(偏痲痺患者)의 견관절(肩關節) 동통(疼痛)에 대(對)한 봉독약침료법(蜂毒藥鍼療法)의 효과(效果)

Hemiplegic shoulder pain(HSP) is one of the most frequent and difficult problems affecting poststroke hemiplegic patients. Honeybee venom acupuncture therapy(BVAT) is known for its pain relieving effects in arthralgia. To evaluate the effectiveness of BVAT on HSP, 24 patients were sequential1y allocated into BVA T treatment group and control group and monitored for 4 weeks at time interval of initial(T0), 1 week(T1), 2 weeks(T2) and 4 weeks(T4). In treatment group, 1:10000 honeybee venom solution 0.2㎖ was injected into acupoint(s) following Deqi three times a week. Kyonu(LI15) was used in the first week. Thereafter Kyonu(LI15) and Nosu(SI10) were used. Visual analogue scale of pain severity showed significant decrease in treatment group compared to control group at T2 and T4 evaluation. Painless passive range of motion of shoulder external rotation showed significant increase in treatment group compared to control group at T4 evaluation. Fugl-Meyer Motor Assessment of upper limb motor function and Modified Ashworth scale of the spasticity of upper limb showed no difference between two groups. BVAT showed as an effective therapy in HSP and further extensive clinical studies are expected.

FCST의 초기 역사

Objectives: Functional Cerebrospinal Therapy (FCST) is a rather new physiologic therapeutics. It has passed about two decades since its basic idea was founded. This study briefly reviewed its early history. Methods: The first FCST patient was a stroke patient in the year 1992. Basic ideas of FCST was devised one by one and later developed into a systematic clinical application. The first official lecture was held in the year 2004. Yinyang balance in the meridian-system-based network over the whole body was a mainstay idea. Results: As other stories on newly-developed therapeutics, there was an effort to make a breakthrough for difficult clinical problems, and followed by a creative initial idea along with incessant refinement in the early history of FCST. Conclusions: Patient-centered approaches was a mainspring in the development and refinement of FCST. History of FCST hereafter may well follow the trace.

Microarray Analysis of Gene Expression in Chondrosarcoma Cells Stimulated with Bee Venom

봉독은 관절염 치료를 비롯한 여러 질환에 그 응용범위가 넓어지고 있으며 기전규명과 새로운 치료효과 개발을 위한 연구가 필요하다. 연골의 파괴는 진행된 각종 관절병증의 공통 병리기전이며 연골세포의 기능이상은 이 기전에 중요한 의미를 지닌다. 사람 연골세포의 특성을 유지하고 있는 HTB-94 연골육종세포를 배양하고 봉독을 처치했을 때의 유전자 발현양상을 microarray를 이용하여 관찰하였다. 대조군에 비해 4배 이상 발현의 차이가 있는 경우를 유의한 것으로 보았을 때 microarray의 344개 유전자중 봉독처치시 발현이 증강되는 유전자는 없었으며 발현이 억제되는 유전자는 interleukin 6 receptor, interleukin 1 alpha, tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 1, matrix metalloproteinase 1, tumor necrosis factor (ligand) superfamily, members 4, 8 and 12, and caspases 2, 6, and 10등 35개가 관찰되었다. Microarray를 통한 유전자발현 분석을 통해 관절염에 대한 봉독치료의 기전을 시사하는 유용한 자료를 얻을 수 있었으며 앞으로 보다 넓은 범위에 대한 연구가 필요할 것이다.
