        CO2 enrichment increased leaf initiation and photosynthesis in Doritaenopsis Queen Beer ‘Mantefon’ orchids

        The plants have potential on carbon sink because plants absorb carbon dioxide (CO2) in ambient and use that for photosynthesis.CO2 enrichment, which is a commonly used technique in vegetable culture, may gain importance in ornamental production, potentially shortening the growth period. However, compared with forests and crop plants, the studies of CO2 enrichment on orchids are relatively limited. This study was undertaken to investigate the effects of elevated CO2 concentrations on leaf initiation and photosynthesis in the orchid Doritaenopsis Queen Beer ‘Mantefon’. Leaf growth and photosynthetic characteristics were measured in the plants grown under 450 (ambient control), 800, and 1600 μmol mol−1 CO2 during the latter 6 h of the dark period for 36 weeks. The number of leaves increased with the elevated CO2 concentration, and the time to leaf initiation decreased with elevated CO2 concentration. However, leaf span and biomass was lower in the plants grown under the higher CO2 concentrations compared to the plants grown under ambient CO2. Maximum net CO2 uptake, transpiration rate, and stomatal conductance were higher in the plants grown under 1600 μmol mol−1 CO2 than in the plants grown under 450 μmol mol−1 CO2. The 800 and 1600 μmol mol−1 CO2 concentrations accelerated leaf initiation and net CO2 uptake. We found that concentrations of CO2in the 800 and 1600 μmol mol−1 CO2 range were controlled for growth of Doritaenopsis orchids.

        국내 가드닝 관련 교육프로그램 현황 분석

        The study investigated two types of programs for analyzing the status of education programs related to garden-related in Korea: (1) all programs that use gardenrelated keywords in the program name, activities, handouts, etc. such as garden, gardening, gardener and (2) program to train experts in arboreta·botanical gardens. These programs were in operation from 2017 to 2018 in Korea. Based on this survey, it was found that 83 garden-related programs were organized by 54 host institutions. In host institutions, local government accounted for the largest number (39 institutions, 72.2%), followed by private arboretum·botanic garden (6 institutions, 11.1%), public arboretum·botanic garden (5 institutions, 9.3%), national arboretum·botanic garden (2 institutions, 3.7%), private enterprise (1 institution, 1.9%), and university (1 institution, 1.9%). 83 garden-related programs were executed by 63 executing institutions. 12 of the executing institutions were universities, indicating that universities commissioned programs from local governments. Garden-related programs were the most distributed in Gyeonggi-do (50 programs, 61.4%) among regional distribution. Among the garden-related programs, there were the most programs for adults (64 programs, 63.4%). 78.3% (65 programs) of garden-related programs were available to professionals education. As people are expected to increase their interest in nature, forest, garden and continue to expand the garden sector n ationally, various e xperiences s hould be p rovide through the provision of more garden-related programs. 본 연구는 국내 가드닝 관련 교육프로그램 현황 분석을 위해 ‘가든’, ‘가드닝’, ‘가드너’, ‘정원’, ‘정원사’ 등의 관련 키워드가 프로그램 명, 활동, 유인물 등에 사용된 프로그램과 수목원·식물원 전문 인력 양성 프로그램을 모두 조사하였다. 국내에서 2017년과 2018년에 운영된 프로그램을 대상으로 하였다. 조사 결과, 54개의 주관기관에서 83개의 가드닝 관련 프로그램이 운영된 것으로 나타났다. 주관기관 중에 지자체가가장 많은 것으로 나타났고(39기관, 72.2%), 이외에는 사립 수목원·식물원(6개, 11.1%), 공립 수목원·식물원(5개, 9.3%), 국립 수목원·식물원(2개, 3.7%), 사기업(1개, 1.9%), 대학교(1개, 1.9%) 순으로 나타났다. 83개의 가드닝 관련 프로그램은 63개의 운영기관에서 수행되었다. 운영기관 중 12개의 기관은 대학교로, 대학교에서 지자체의 프로그램을 위탁받아 운영했음을 알 수 있다. 가드닝 관련 프로그램은 경기도(50개, 61.4%)에 가장 많이 분포되어 있었다. 가드닝 관련 프로그램중 성인이 참가 가능한 프로그램(64개, 63.4%)이 가장 많았으며, 전체 프로그램 중 65개(78.3%)는 전문교육을 위한 프로그램인 것으로 조사되었다. 국민들의 자연, 숲, 정원에 대한 관심 증대와 지속적인 국가적 정원 분야의 확대가 예상됨에 따라 더 많은 가드닝 관련 프로그램 제공을 통해 다양한 경험의기회를 주는 것이 필요할 것으로 보인다.

        수목원·식물원의 자유학기제 프로그램 개발, 적용 및 분석 - 국립수목원 ‘1일 숲해설가 되어보기’ 프로그램을 중심으로 -

        국립수목원 자유학기제 프로그램의 일환으로 국립수목원과 광릉숲 관람객의 효율적인 관람을 도와주는 전문가인 숲해설가의 직업을 체험할 수 있는 ‘1일 숲해설가 되어보기’ 프로그램을 개발하였다. 2018년과 2019년에 10개 중학교를 대상으로 운영되었으며 중학생 총 491명이 ‘1일 숲해설가 되어보기’ 프로그램에 참여하였다. 교육 요소는 국립수목원 전시원과 숲해설가 직무에서 추출하였으며 교육 대상이 청소년인 점을 고려한 흥미 요소를 첨가하였다. ‘1일 숲해설가 되어보기’ 프로그램은 실제 국립수목원 숲해설가 만나기, 숲 별명 지어보기, 6개 해설 주제 중 1개 골라보기, 오리엔티어링 방법을 활용하여 4개 모둠 미션 수행하기, 숲해설가 프로필 사진 찍어보기, 한 줄 숲해설 시연 등으로 구성하였다. 프로그램의 만족도, 자유학기제 및 산림 교육 측면 교육 효과를 조사하기 위해 사전과 사후에 설문조사를 수행하여 분석한 결과, 만족도 평균 3.8, 자유학기제 측면 평균 4.1, 산림 교육 측면 평균 4.0으로 모두 중위수(3.0) 이상으로 나타났다. 사전과 사후 설문조사를 비교 분석한 결과 자유학기제 측면 중 직업 독립성 부분과 산림 교육 측면 중 산림생물종 인식 부분에서 유의한 교육 효과가 있는 것으로 나타났다. As part of the Korea National Arboretum’s free semester program, ‘One Day Forest Interpreter’ was newly introduced. The program enables visitors to the arboretum to play a forest interpreter’s role, which is efficiently helping people to find their way through the arboretum and Gwangneung Forest. A total of 491 students from ten middle schools participated in the program in 2018 and 2019. It includes required skills of gardens and forest interpreters and contains a content that bring teenagers’ attention in consideration of participants’ age group. The program consists of ‘Meeting Forest Interpreters’,‘Giving a Nickname on the Forest’, ‘Picking One Out of Six Topics’ and ‘One-line Demonstration of Forest Interpreter’. Surveys were conducted before and after each program to analyze visitor satisfaction and educational effects on the free semester and forest education. The results reveal that the average satisfactory rates of the entire program, the free semester and forest education are 3.8, 4.1 and 4.0 respectively, which are all above the median of 3.0. Comparative analyses of questionnaires given to participants before and after they take part in the program indicate that forest species awareness was educationally effective in particular between vocational independence and forest education aspects of the free semester.

        Development and Operational Test of the Free Semester Program Education in Arboreta and Botanical Gardens: Focusing on ‘Gardener for a Day’ Program in Korea National Arboretum

        As part of the free semester program, the ‘Gardener for a day’ program in the Korea National Arboretum was newly developed in 2018. The program was developed as a free semester program reflecting the works of a ‘gardener’ who performs the planning, preparation, maintenance and management of exhibition gardens. This ‘Gardener for a day’ program was applied to a total of 106 middle school students in October 2018. Educational elements were extracted from Korea National Arboretum exhibition gardens and career exploration of gardeners. The program was designed to provide education on theory and practices, including watching the gardener video, visiting the gardener booth, meeting with actual gardeners at Korea National Arboretum, visiting two exhibition gardens, and participating in three types of practical training as a gardener. A survey about program satisfaction and education was conducted after the program to analyze the students’ satisfaction with the program (contents, management, instructor), free semester program (career planning, occupational attitude, independence), and education (awareness of forest biospecies, preservation will). The analysis showed that the following results: satisfaction with the program (score 4.0), free semester program (score 3.8), and education (score 4.0). Comparative analysis of the pretestposttest questionnaires showed that there were significant educational effects in career planning, occupational attitude, and awareness of forest biospecies.

        Photosynthetic and Growth Response of Phalaenopsis Queen Beer ‘Mantefon’ to Variable CO2 Concentrations at Different Vegetative Growth Stages

        Photosynthetic characteristics and growth responses of Phalaenopsis Queen Beer ‘Mantefon’ orchid were determined in plants exposed to variable carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations at 2-, 24-, and 36-weeks age (i.e., corresponding to juvenile, young, and mature vegetative growth stages, respectively). Plants were grown at 400 (control), 800, or 1,600 μmol・mol-1 CO2 for 6 hours during the nighttime for 32 weeks. Phalaenopsis ‘Mantefon’ in 2- and 24-week-old plants grown at 1,600 μmol・mol-1 CO2 had increased leaf number and net CO2 uptake compared with the plants grown at 400 μmol・mol-1 CO2. In 36-week-old of Phalaenopsis ‘Mantefon’, leaf number was significantly greater in plant grown at 800 and 1,600 μmol・mol-1 conditions compared with plants grown at 400 μmol・mol-1 CO2. Leaves that emerged after the start of the CO2 treatment were initially longer in the plants grown at 1,600 μmol・mol-1 CO2 than at 400 μmol·mol-1 CO 2, but the final leaf length was shortest in the plants grown at 1,600 μmol・mol-1 CO2 condition. Plants showed crassulancean acid metabolism characteristic of nighttime CO2 uptake regardless plant growth stages. We found that growers may be able to promote leaf growth with increasing leaf number and reducing time to leaf initiation in the 36-week-old (i.e., mature stage) plants with 800 – 1,600 μmol·mol-1 CO2 and 2- and 24-week-old (i.e., juvenile and young stages) plants with 1,600 μmol·mol-1 CO 2 for Phalaenopsis ‘Mantefon’.
