Duplicated inferior vena cava (IVC) is a congenital anomaly seen rarely in the general population. Patients with IVC variants usually do not present any symptoms and are found incidentally in many cases. However, physicians are urged to recognize the presence of such anomalies during diagnostic or invasive procedures as these variants of blood vessel systems can impose substantial implications in certain clinical situations. Subsequently, information about IVC variants may become critical if surgical injuries or predisposing conditions act as life-threatening risks to patients during medical procedures. We present a case of duplicated IVC in a 68?year?old female patient with rectal cancer where an IVC anomaly was found during surgical resection of her tumor. From our experience, we emphasize the importance of having the knowledge of IVC variations in patients undergoing invasive surgical procedures which may involve large vessels.

A large amount of CRT waste has been generated due to the interruption of analog broadcasting in 2012. In particular, CRT glass has been pointed out as a cause of environmental pollution because it contains a large amount of heavy metals such as lead for electromagnetic shielding. In this study, the electrical resistivity of mortar specimen using CRT waste glass as fine aggregate was measured to investigate the relationship between electrical resistivity and shielding characteristics.

As the survival rate of patients with complex congenital heart disease has improved and the number of adult patients with congenital heart disease has risen, arrhythmias and heart failure have become important issues in these patients. Cardiac implantable electronic devices, including pacemakers, are also on the rise. Transvenous implantation or epicardial pacemaker implantation is challenging in patients with complex congenital heart disease. Here we report a case in which a dual-chamber pacing, dual-chamber sensing, dual response and rate-adaptive (DDDR) pacemaker was implanted transvenously into a patient with congenital heart disease. A 34-year-old male with extracardiac conduit Fontan circulation complained of dizziness; an electrocardiogram revealed junctional bradycardia. We performed transvenous implantation of a DDDR pacemaker via trans-conduit puncture. In conclusion, transvenous implantation of a pacemaker is feasible in patients with extracardiac conduit Fontan circulation. (Korean J Med 2015;88:299-302)
형광백혈구 안저촬영술에서 플로레신 염색의 안정성과 형광림프구의 분리

Recently, retinal blood flow has been studied with several methods, targeted dye delivery method, fluorescent vesicle system, laser Doppler velocimetry, acridine orange staining method. Authors presented a new method, fluorescein leukocyte angiography using a scanning laser ophthalmoscope which include external staining of leukocyte with fluorescein dye and reintroduce the fluorescent leukocyte into the blood flow. Authors tried to check security of external fluorescein staining of leukocytes and separation of fluorescent lymphocytes from whole blood and supernatant fluid using Ficoll-Paque, with cell viability, leukocyte recovery rate and erythrocyte contamination rate. There was no significant difference in cell viability, leukocyte recovery rate and erythrocyte contamination rate between fluorescein staining group and non-staining group. Fluorescent lymphocytes could be separated from whole blood and supernatant solution after gravity sedimentation with 6% hetastarch and the gravity sedimented group had low erythrocyte contamination rate than whole blood group(p≤0.05). In conclusion, external fluorescein staining procedure of leukocyte during fluorescein leukocyte angiography could be performed without cell injury compared to non-fluorescein staining group and fluorescent lymphocyte could be separated from whole blood and supernatant fluid after gravity sedimentation.
