        Predicting Korean EFL learners’ reading comprehension with decoding skills and oral vocabulary knowledge

        The present study investigated the role of decoding skills and oral vocabulary knowledge inpredicting Korean EFL students’ reading comprehension abilities. In doing so, reading volumeand frustration degree were also considered as predicting variables of reading comprehension. The participants of the study were forty-two seventh-grade Korean middle school students, whowere tested on the measures of pseudo- and real-word decoding, oral vocabulary knowledge,reading volume, degree of frustration, and reading comprehension. Data were first analyzedwith correlation analysis, and a series of hierarchical regression analyses were further conductedin order to examine the relative predictive power of decoding skills and oral vocabularyknowledge. The results indicated that all of the variables were statistically significantlycorrelated to each other and both decoding skills and oral vocabulary knowledge explainedunique variance in reading comprehension even after controlling for the effects of readingvolume and frustration. However, when compared, oral vocabulary knowledge turned out to bea more powerful predictor of reading comprehension than decoding skills. Implications ontheory, policy, and classroom instructions are discussed.

        Reading Fluency and Listening Comprehension Abilities as Predictors of Reading Comprehension

        This study aimed to examine whether overall English proficiency influences the relative predictive power of reading fluency and listening comprehension abilities in explaining the reading comprehension of Korean EFL learners within the simple view of reading framework, when the age factor is controlled for. One hundred sixteen eleventh-grade Korean high school students consisting of two highly distinct groups in general English proficiency―55 Most Highly Capable Students (MHCS) and 61 Capable Students (CS)―were tested on measures of reading fluency, vocabulary knowledge, listening comprehension, and reading comprehension. The findings indicated that reading fluency and listening comprehension abilities were significantly related to the reading comprehension of both MHCS and CS groups. However, the results from a series of hierarchical regression analyses revealed that while listening comprehension was a stronger predictor of reading comprehension of the MHCS group, it was reading fluency that explained more variance in comprehension of the CS group. Implications for reading instructions are discussed.

        전동차 내 에어커튼이 실내공기질에 미치는 영향

        Air curtains, blowing air streams across a doorway, were installed in trial trains on subway line 7 in 2021 and they have been operated with dust collectors to improve the air quality of subway trains. In this study, we investigated the effects of air curtains on the indoor air quality in the trial subway trains. The concentrations of PM2.5 and carbon dioxide in the four selected cabins were measured in the morning hours (e.g., 7:30–11:30 am including the morning rush hour). The measurements were conducted on February 26, March 31, April 30, and May 14, 2021 and air curtain (AC)s and dust collector (DC)s in the four cabins were operated differently on those measuring days. All devices were turned off in the control cabin and only ACs, only DCs, and both the ACs and DCs were turned on in the other three cabins, respectively. The 4-h-averaged PM2.5 concentrations in the cabins, where only ACs and only DCs are turned on, are lower than in the control cabin by 18% and 26%, respectively. In addition, the joint operation of ACs and DCs can decrease the PM2.5 concentration by up to 42%. The time series of PM2.5 concentrations, measured on April 30, illustrate again that ACs block the intrusion of outside particulate matters. The 4-h-averaged carbon dioxide concentrations in the four cabins do not show monotonic differences between the cabins because of the generation of carbon dioxides inside the cabins. When the weights of individual cars and thus the numbers of passengers are similar between the cabins, the carbon dioxide concentrations in the ACs-operated cabins are higher than in the control cabin. This indicates that ACs can block the outward emission of carbon dioxides and maybe other indoor air pollutants as well. .

        From Clicks to Cuisine: Consumer Perceptions and Behavioral Responses to RMR in the Online Shopping

        Since consumers do online shopping more than ever, various types of online food products have emerged. Several types of convenient food products, including HMR (home meal replacement) and RMR (restaurant meal replacement), had been spotlighted due to the delivery service and pandemic. The main difference of RMR is that it has its brand and physical restaurant. This study clarifies the distinguished factors of RMR and examines the relationship among RMR selection attributes, the Technology Acceptance Model, satisfaction, and behavioral intention. Moreover, since RMR can be a possible inducement for consumers who have experienced the product visiting the actual restaurant, behavioral intention includes offline transition intention as well as repurchase intention. Survey data was obtained from 409 consumers who had experienced buying RMR through an online platform. Multi-regression analysis and Baron & Kenny’s mediation analysis were used to examine the study's hypotheses to figure specific effects among variables. This study reveals that TAM factors significantly influence consumer satisfaction but do not directly impact repurchase or offline transition intention. RMR attributes such as diversity, taste, and economics are more influential in directly shaping consumers’ behavioral intentions. Additionally, with a specific mediation effect, TAM factors, review and convenience must need to have consumer satisfaction as a preceding factor rather than directly influencing behavioral intention, while other RMR attributes have a mediation effect of satisfaction on both repurchase and offline transition intention.

        The Importance of Decoding Skills in Predicting Vocabulary Knowledge

        The present study was designed to investigate the relationship between two prominent constructs of reading, decoding skills and vocabulary knowledge, and to explore whether there is a change in the relation between the two variables, depending on the general English proficiency of the students. The participants of this study were 56 Korean middle school students in grade one, who were divided into two highly distinguishable groups in terms of their English proficiency: High-achieving Students (HS) and Low-achieving Students (LS). Data on the decoding skills and vocabulary knowledge of the participants were collected. These were later evaluated by a series of correlation and regression analyses. The results of all samples put together indicated a strong correlation between decoding skills and vocabulary knowledge. The decoding skills turned out to be a significant predictor of vocabulary knowledge. However, when the results of the two groups were compared, they showed sharply dissimilar outcomes: while the outcome of LS was almost equivalent to the results of the whole sample, the decoding skills of HS were not significantly related to, nor did they make significant contribution to, the vocabulary knowledge. Implications on policy and classroom instructions are discussed in the paper.

        사전인지 해외 외식브랜드에 대한 브랜드 이미지, 지각된 가치, 행동의도 간의 영향관계 연구

        Purpose: The purpose of this study is to classify specific brand image factors, consumers’ value perception, and behavior intention through the relationships among brand image, perceived quality, and behavioral intention toward foreign restaurant brands with prior awareness. Methods: A total of 279 valid data were used for the empirical analysis out of 295 questionnaires. The sample was collected by an online survey method among adults who were previously aware of and had experienced foreign restaurant brands introduced in South Korea. Basic statistical analysis was carried out to analyze the respondents’ demographic characteristics and usage behavior of the foreign restaurant brands with prior awareness. After performing reliability and exploratory analysis to extract factors of each variable, this study conducted multiple regression analysis to verify the relationships. Results: Regarding the relationship between brand image and perceived value, the unique image had a positive influence on psychological, social, and quality value(p<.01). The professional image had a positive impact on psychological, economic, and quality value(p<.001). The modern image had a negative impact on psychological value(p<.05), whereas it had a positive impact on social value(p<.01). The friendly image had a negative influences on both social and quality value(p<.05). The functional image only had a positive impact on quality value(p<.001). Lastly, all perceived value factors had positive influences on behavioral intention(p<.001). Conclusion: Since consumers attempt to symbolize themselves through dining-out experiences, brand strategy has becoming essential. the results of this study demonstrate that consumers tend to recognize high quality brand images, have a positive consumptive attitudes about unique and guaranteed brands, show positive recognition towards brand images that match their personalities. Thus, restaurant brands should make a detailed strategies to establish continuous relationships between brand image and customers.
