Malignant Retroperitoneal Paraganglioma in a Siberian Tiger

A 14 year old female Siberian tiger presented for postmortem examination. A large mass attached to sublumbar area was found to be circumscribing aorta with metastases to mesenteric lymph nodes, uterus, kidney, adrenal gland, lung and thymus. The tumor cells were arranged in clusters or nests separated by well-developed fibrovascular stroma. The individual cells were plump and polygonal with granular eosinophilic cytoplasms and had distinct cell borders. The tumor cells were positive for synaptophysin, chromogranin A and neuron-specific enolase, and negative for cytokeratins, S100 and glial fibrillary acidic protein. The primary tumor was diagnosed as a malignant retroperitoneal paraganglioma.
Treatment of White Line Disease by Therapeutic Shoeing in Horse

An 3-year-old female Thoroughbred horse was referred with moderate lameness (3/5G) and mild heat on right hoof of forelimb. She was diagnosed with white line disease (WLD) that was included hoof wall separation by radiographic examination and hoof percussion. Treatment was carried out hoof wall resection at first, followed by disinfection of affected hoof and shod modified heart bar. On the re-examination after 4 months, we could find a results which had no lameness, gas pocket in the white line and clinical signs was improved. Subsequently, she was trained and raced after 8 months of diagnosis. So, we supposed that resection of wall and therapeutic shoeing was good for WLD including hoof separation.
Elm tree bark extract inhibits HepG2 hepatic cancer cell growth via pro-apoptotic activity

Control of inflammation is widely accepted as an important strategy for cancer chemoprevention. Anti-inflammatory effects of bark extracts of elm tree (BEE) have been amply reported. Therefore, BEE may be a good candidate cancer chemopreventive agent. Considering the high incidence of hepatic cancer and limited therapeutic approaches for treating this disease, it is important to develop liver cancer-specific chemopreventive agents. To evaluate the chemopreventive potential of BEE, we investigated the growth inhibition effect of BEE on the HepG2 human hepatocellular carcinoma cell line. We performed a cell counting kit-8 assay to determine cell viability, and 4,6-diamino-2-phenylindole staining and flow cytometry to measure apoptotic cell death. Finally, the expression levels of pro- and anti-apoptotic proteins were measured. BEE inhibited the growth of HepG2 cells and induced apoptosis in a dose-dependent manner. Pro-apoptotic activity was promoted via the mitochondrial pathway of apoptosis, as demonstrated by the activation of pro-apoptotic proteins Bax, caspase-9, caspase-3, and poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase as well as the down-regulation of the anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2. These results suggest that BEE may have potential use in hepatic cancer chemoprevention by suppressing cancer cell growth via pro-apoptotic activity.

A 3-year-old colt Thoroughbred horse was referred with obvious lameness (3/5G) and mild heat and painon left hoof of forelimb. He was diagnosed with quarter cracks that have a typical conformation of sheared heel,which are a different length and height between medial/lateral heels. Various materials and techniques were carriedout to repair quarter cracks by using many different kinds of clips, bar shoes on fifth times for about 10 months. It worked on him without pain and heat on the cracked hoof, and then he could retrain for racing from the 36thweeks beginning of therapeutic shoeing. We suggested that especially fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) material andtherapeutic shoeing were a great help to treat quarter cracks induced by sheared heel.
Pathologic Features of a Systemic Dirofilariasis in a Dog

Canine heartworm disease typically is manifested by the presence of heartworms in the pulmonary artery and, to a lesser degree, the right ventricle. Systemic arterial dirofilariasis is an unusual manifestation of heartworm disease of dogs that results from aberrant migration of Dirofilaria immitis into the peripheral arterial circulation. A 3-year-old Jindo dog was referred to Veterinary Medical Center because of hindlimb lameness, paresthesia of hindlimbs and interdigital ischemic necrosis. Angiography and ultrasonography diagnosed as heartworm infestation. In necropsy, entangled heartworms were present throughout the body including lungs, kidney, small intestinal lumens and arteries in addition to the right ventricle and pulmonary artery. Histologically, lung showed adult heart worms in vessels, organized thrombotic vessels, and interstitial pneumonia featured by typeⅡ pneumocyte hyperplasia, thickened alveolar wall and compressed alveolar spaces. Chronic parenchymal lesions such as focal or diffuse necrosis, fibrosis and dystrophic calcification were remarkable in liver and kidney. The present case showed a typical canine systemic heartworm diasease caused by aberrant migration of Dirofilaria immitis.
A Case of Pulmonary Fibrosis with Lung Lobe Torsion in a Pekinese Dog

Pulmonary fibrosis (PF) is defined as a gradual, interstitial fibrous disease of the lung parenchyma. PF causes collapse of lung lobe which can lead to lung lobe torsion of another side. A 14-year-old male Pekinese dog was referred to Veterinery Medical Center, Chungbuk National University. The chief complaint was acute dyspnea. The dog had a history of chronic cough which lasted for 18 month and cough was deteriorated recently. Tachypnea was noted on physical examination. As a result of thoracic radiographs, ultrasonography and computed tomography, lung lobe torsion and collapse were diagnosed. A postmortem examination revealed lung lobe torsion of left cranial lobe and carnification of right cranial lobe. Histologically, severe and diffuse interstitial fibrosis with distortion of alveolar architecture and severe congestion and/or hemorrhage were noted in right cranial lobe and left cranial lobe, respectively. Although the cause of pulmonary fibrosis was undetermined, this case showed a typical lung lobe torsion caused by pulmonary fibrosis.
