        말에서 체열촬영술의 적용에 관한 연구

        The purpose of this study was to construct fundamental information for the usefulness and effects of thermography in Thoroughbred horses. Total 10 horses were examined to determine a normal thermal pattern before and after sedation in lower limbs and ophthalmic area, and to investigate the effects of thermography during 42 days after induced wound and arthritis. In normal horses, the range of temperature difference(DT) of symmetry site in lower limbs was 0.20 to 0.68oC on pre-sedation, which was simillar to that of post sedation, 0.17 to 0.74oC, and eyeball area was 0.34 to 0.68oC. Thermographically, the warmest area in normal limbs were coronary band of frontal view and the region between heel bulbs of back view. And temperature difference(DT) after clipping in left forelimb was increased 1 to 3oC more than before clipping. However, there was no significant change of the temperature difference and degree of clinical signs by the process of inflammation healing during the experiment period in the all groups. These results suggest that the thermography was especially helpful in following clinical course of a disease because the thermal pattern will return to normal with declining clinical signs and healing of the lesion.

        더러브렛 망아지에서 제허니아 정복술 치료예

        two-month-old female Thoroughbred foal was referred to the Equine Hospital, Jeju Stud Farm, Korea Racing Association. The foal was presented with opening of the abdominal ring by congenital predisposition. In physical examination, the foal revealed a mild heating, fluctuant swelling at umbilicus. The umbilical hernia was diagnosed, and then modified umbilical herniorraphy was performed and resulted in successful treatment. We conclude this method is of great value within the six-month-old foal with hernial ring size less than 10cm.

        초음파술에 의한 더러브렛 암말의 번식환경이 임신에 미치는 영향

        The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of breeding conditions on reproductive efficiency of thoroughbred broodmares by ultrasonography. The mean age and breeding career of 120 mares used in this study were 11 years old and 6 years, respectively. The average pregnancy rate and embryonic loss rate were 87.5%, 11.8%. The groups that were 8-10 years old, 4-6 years, maiden and mated on May showed the highest pregnancy rate. While mares mated on 1st estrus post partus had the highest ovulation rate but showed the highest embryonic loss rate and the lowest pregnancy rate. And broodmares that had more intrauterine foreign bodies such as cyst and fluid with age and breeding career had represented lower pregnancy rate and higher embryonic loss rate than those having normal uterine condition. These results suggest that the breeding condition and uterine environment of mares had a signficant influence on reproductive efficiency.

        한국 남$\cdot$서해 및 동중국해 북부해역에 출현하는 수온전선

        SST (Sea Surface. Temperature) fronts which were found in the South-West Sea of Korea and the northern area of the East China Sea were examined in order to clarify their positions, shapes, seasonal changes and the formation mechanism, For this study used SST data rearranged from the SST IR image during 1991 to 1996 and oceanographical data obtained by National Fisheries Research and Development Institute. Temperature front in the Cheju Strait was analyzed by the data obtained from a fisheries guidance ship of Cheju Provincial Government, The coastal frontal zone in the South-West Sea of Korea and the offshore frontal zone in the northern area of the East China Sea can be divided into several types (Type of Winter, Summer, Spring, Autumn and late Autumn), Short term variations of SST fronts have a tendency not to move to any Bleat extent for several days. The location of the frontal zone in the southwestern sea of Cheju Island changes on a much large scale than that of the one in the southern coast of Korea, The frontal Tone, formed every year in the southern sea of Korea approaches closer to the coastal area in winter, and moves closer to the south in spring and autumn. The frontal zone of the southwestern sea of Cheju Island moves in a westerly direction from the east, and reaches its most westerly point in the winter and its most easterly point in the summer related to the seasonal change of the Tsushima Current. Additionally, the frontal zone of the southwestern sea of Korea becomes extremely weak in March, April and November. SST fronts are formed every year around the line connecting Cheju Island to Yeoseo Island or to Chungsan Island in the Cheju Strait. A Ring-shaped tidal mixing front appears along the coastal area of Cheju Island throughout the year except during the months from November to January. Especially, in May and October fronts are formed between the coastal waters of Cheju Island and the Tsushima currents connecting the frontal zone of the coastal region in the southern sea of Korea with that of the southwestern sea of Cheju Island.

        경주마의 경주중 사고 발생동향

        This study was carried out to investigate the characteristics of 335 injured racehorses that had rested over 6 months or were retired in Seoul racecourse from 1994 to 1998. We surveyed 62,117 racing horses and incidence rate of injured horses was 0.54%. Of 335 horses, 322 horses(96.1 %) were associated with musculoskeletal disorders. The musculoskeletal disorders observed with high incidence were fracture and luxation(53.1%), tendinitis and desmitis(17.7%) in category, forelimb(92.5%) in location, below metacarpus/metatarsus(73.0%) in lesion. The prevalence rate of male, 5 years old or Ireland origin was higher than any other individual. These data would be useful standard reference for control of injuries in racing horses.

        경주환경이 경주사고에 미치는 영향

        This research was conducted to investigate the effects of race conditions on racing injury in Thoroughbred(TB) horses. A total 335 horses were investigated the relationship between race conditions and racing injuries. The main environmental factors of racing injuries were spring season, rainy weather and sloppy racetrack. In the race types, high incidence of racing injury was found in special weigh, stakes, middle class and long length race. This results suggest that the racing injury can be effected to both individual body condition and various racetrack conditions.

        말에서 체열촬영술의 응용

        The aim of this study was to investigate the usefulness and effectiveness of thermography in horse. Total 21 horses associated with locomotors, wound, and ophthalmic disease were investigated. Thermographically, the wannest area in normal limb was coronary band ($27.26^{\circ}C$), and carpus, metacarpus, fetlock, and pastern area were $26.64^{\circ}C$, $24.42^{\circ}C$, $23.64^{\circ}C$ and $23.06^{\circ}C$, respectively. The temperature($^{\circ}C$) of horses with lameness, swelling, nervous, ataxia was lower(cold spot) than surrounding tissue or symmetry area, and with heat, signs of inflammation was increased(hot spot). These results suggest that the thermography is useful for the early detection of locomotors, wound, and ophthalmic disease in horse and an excellent adjunct to clinical examination.

        더러브렛 암말의 번식기 발정상태가 번식효율에 미치는 영향

        The purpose of this study was to ascertain the breeding efficiency in Thoroughbred mare. A total of 106 mares were investigated for the status of follicle (462 cases), ovulation (179 cases) and pregnancy (346 cases). Of total examination, 46.8% was follicle measure to determine breeding time, and mating rate per cases examined was 39.9%. There was no correlation between reproductive results and size of follicles or endometrial edema or degrees of teasing alone. 143 cases were ovulated among 179 cases which were performed ovulation examination, and ovulation rate and fertilization rate per mating times were 79.9% and 39.0%, respectively. The use of hCG(human chorionic gonadotropin), to facilitate ovulation, presented to increase occurrence of double ovulations and twin fertilizations In conclusion, though more examination to estimate the optimal breeding time and higher mating rate was performed, fertilization rate per mating times was lower and then reproductive efficiency also became decreased. Therefore, it seemed that accurate examination of reproductive tracks, appropriate teasing programme and hCG administration before ovulation were of help to improve ovulation rate and fertilization rate.
