Reflective polarizers can be used as luminance enhancement films for LCD backlights via the polarization recycling process. The optical performances of a wire grid polarizer (WGP) as a reflective polarizer adopted in edge-lit backlights were investigated by luminance evaluation and a time-domain simulation technique. The results were compared to those of a commercial dielectric multilayer film. The luminance gain factor of WGP was smaller than that of the multilayer film by 18%. This was attributed to a much larger internal loss of WGP due to light absorption by metal wires. The internal losses of both reflective polarizers and the polarization conversion efficiency of the backlight were obtained numerically based on a phenomenological model. The optical performances of WGP were optimized by using a time-domain simulation technique. The luminance gain increased and was found to become comparable to, but slightly less than the case of the dielectric multilayer film with decreasing line width.
자연스러운 의사소통 환경에서 실현된 한국대학생들의 영어요구화행

The purpose of this study was to look into the pragmatic ability of Korean learners of English in the performance of requests at a naturalistic, communicative setting. A study was conducted in which EFL Korean college students participated as subjects, and data were gathered via English chatting for 16 weeks. The results of the study showed that subjects preferred to choose a request strategy at the most direct level, imperative, used downgraders less often than English native speakers with a heavy reliance on two downgraders, please and tense, and made less frequent use of supportive moves than English native speakers with a strong preference for grounder. It was clear that subjects tended to be less polite than English native speakers in their requests, and could not mitigate the imposition created by their requests by offering logical and persuasive reasons or explanations for their requests. So the results indicated that subjects could not realize requests appropriately in the way accepted by L2 socio-cultural norms, and lacked in L2 pragmatic competence. It was concluded that there was a clear, definite need for the implementation of pragmatic instruction in EFL classes to promote L2 pragmatic knowledge on the speech act of requests in explicit, conscious manners. 본 연구는 자연스러운 의사소통 환경인 채팅을 통해 한국학습자들의 영어요구화행능력을 알아보는데 초점을 두었다. 16주에 걸친 영어 채팅에서 나타난 한국대학생들의 영어요구화행을 요구책략, 완화제(downgraders), 그리고지지흥정(supportive moves)에 따라 분석하여 피험자들과 목표어화자들간의유사점과 차이점을 밝혀내었다. 연구결과에 의하면, 피험자들은 영어요구화행수행에서 직접성(directness)이 강한 명령형태를 통해 요구책략을 실현하려는경향이 많았으며, 공손 표현을 위한 완화제사용에서 공손 표시(please)와 시제(tense) 유형에 주로 의존하고, 목표어화자들에 비해 전체 완화제사용 빈도가낮았으며, 특정 유형(grounder)의 지지흥정에 과도하게 의존하고, 목표어화자들에 비해 지지흥정의 활용에서 소극적이었다. 이런 결과는 영어요구화행수행에서 피험자들이 목표어화자들에 비해 덜 공손하고, 논리적이고 설득력있게요구행위에 대한 이유나 설명을 통해 행위의 부담을 줄이고, 응낙가능성을 높이지 못해, 결과적으로 피험자들은 L2사회-문화적 규범에 맞는 적절한 방식으로 영어요구화행을 실현하지 못한것이며, L2화용적 능력이 부족했다고 볼 수있다. 이런 문제점의 해결을 위해 L2요구화행능력배양을 위한 L2화용적 교수의 필요성이 제시되었다.

This paper carried out the comparative analysis on ground impedance of a carbon block and a copper rod. Two types of grounding electrode were compared ; a carbon block (L : 1 m, ${\Phi}$ : 245 mm) buried at a depth of 0.8 m and a three-linked copper rod (L : 1 m, ${\Phi}$ : 10 mm) of equilateral triangles with 1 m spacing. Ground impedance depending on applied current source was evaluated by the application of a sine wave current with 60 Hz ~ 3.5 MHz, a fast-rise pulse with rising time of 200 ns, a standard lightning impulse of $8/20{\mu}s$ and a 600 Hz square wave. Ground impedance for both electrodes were almost the same value below 100 kHz, and increased rapidly afterwards. The maximum ground impedance appeared $400{\Omega}$ at around 1.5 MHz. Ground impedance of the carbon block was lower at the square wave and was higher at fast-rise pulse than that of the copper rod. Also, ground impedance as ages showed no difference for the last 8 months. From the results, it is likely that ground performance for both electrodes shows no difference against commercial frequency and lightning impulse current, while the copper rod shows better performance against a fast-rise pulse with rise-time of a few hundred ns.
콜기반 과정중심 쓰기활동이 학습자의 쓰기에 대한 태도 및 쓰기 능력에 끼치는 영향

The paper investigated the effects of the process-based writing activity designed with the frame of CALL on both EFL learners` attitudes toward writing in English and their writing proficiency. 52 college students participated in a study in which they worked in pairs to write about a topic chosen by themselves by going through various stages of writing from the beginning to the end for six weeks. Data were collected via two differing methods: questionnaires and writing samples (i. e., first and final drafts). To find out the effect of the process-oriented writing activity within CALL on subjects attitudes toward writing in English, two differing kinds of questionnaires were administered to subjects before and after the writing activity. To determine whether the writing activity plays a facilitating role in the improvement of subjects writing activity plays a facilitating role in the improvement of subjects writing ability, 26 sets of the first and final drafts were compared analytically to each other in five aspects of writing. The results of the study indicated that though there existed some aspects of writing remaining unchanged irrespective of the writing activity, overall, subjects showed more positive attitudes toward writing in English after the writing activity than they did prior to the activity. Similarly, though subjects were not able to fully succeed in improving their writing ability in all the five aspects of writing, they did show the promotion of writing skill in such aspects of writing, as fluency, organization, and mechanics. Based on the findings, some suggestions were given for the creation of positive writing attitude and for the improvement of writing ability in EFL classrooms.
