        Grammatical Accuracy and Possibility of Fossilization in Chatting by EFL College Students

        This paper investigated degree of grammatical accuracy of various language forms with a focus on the possibility of their becoming fossilized in a later use of L2. A study was undertaken in which sixty college students engaged in chatting on the Internet for one semester, and erroneous forms in chatting scripts were identified and analyzed. It was shown that erroneous forms employed during chatting were distributed across various linguistic categories, and that eight major grammatical levels accounted for more than 90% of total erroneous forms. Also erroneous forms of grammatical levels such as subject-verb agreement, voice and relative clause were found to have a much higher possibility of being fossilized than those of any other grammatical level under study. It was concluded that though many erroneous forms produced in chatting look simple, and are easy to learn in light of their grammatical functions in sentence, given their frequent occurrence in chatting, both teacher and students need to pay proper attention to them to the point that students’ attempt at communication is not hindered.

        Non-native/Non-native Interactions: Meaning Negotiation by EFL College Students

        The purpose of this paper was to examine various aspects of meaning negotiation process in online chatting. Korean college students were asked to engage in chatting on the Internet over the course of a semester-long period, and chatting transcripts were analyzed in terms of sources of communication breakdown, signals to indicate communication breakdown, strategies to overcome communication breakdown, and ways of closing meaning negotiation. According to the findings of the study, lack of background knowledge and incoherent string of sentences in text were two major barriers creating communication problems. Subjects were able to use signals to indicate their communication difficulties, and overcome them by using different strategies. In doing so, however, they were found to suffer a narrow range of signals and strategies, which showed their limited communicative ability in the management of interaction, and indicated a clear, strong need for an extension of discourse and strategic competences of Korean students for more effective and smoother transition of message in everyday interaction.

        A Study of Comparing Speech Act Data from Two Differing Data-gathering Instruments

        To compare data on the speech act of requests from two different methods, a study was conducted in which both native and non-native speakers of English participated as subjects, and data were collected by means of actual e-mail writing and DCT (discourse completion test). The analysis of requests from the two different data-gathering methods showed that despite some similarities, considerable differences existed between e-mail and DCT requests in several important aspects of requests such as amount of talk, directness level, downgraders and supportive moves which play an important role in making a given request sound less imposing and more polite. Also it was shown that requests of non-native speakers differed considerably from requests of native speakers in terms of the four aspects of requests across type of data-gathering methods. Based on the findings, some suggestions were made for both further research and L2 classrooms.

        A comparison of two English reading classes: With a focus on cooperative learning

        As one way of changing a teacher-fronted, grammar-based reading class into a meaningful, fun-creating one, this paper compared teacher- fronted reading with student-centered reading framed upon cooperative learning. In a study in which each type of reading method was conducted for college students in an EFL reading course for a period of one semester, data were gathered via questionnaires. The results showed that though each type of reading instruction came with its own strengths and weaknesses, student-centered reading instruction was preferred for various reasons. Most important, through an active participation in cooperative work, subjects were motivated and interested in L2 reading much, were exposed to various reading strategies and skills, and practiced them in a friendly, low-anxiety learning climate.

        제 2언어학습자의 사회문화적 지각능력

        The purpose of the paper is to investigate L2 learners` perception of contextual factors embedded into various situations, and the effect of perception on the use of strategies in the performance of the act of requests. To this end, a study was undertaken in which both Korean students of English and native speakers of English participated as subjects, and data were gathered via two differing methods. In the study, subjects were asked to read the description of each item of discourse completion test, and to write down what they would say in a given item. Right after completing each item, subjects were asked to assess three contextual factors (social power, familiarity, and degree of imposition) embedded into that item by answering three rating questions in terms of a four-point scale. The analysis of data indicated that in some situations two groups showed similarities while in other situations they differed in the perception of contextual factors. Also two groups differed greatly from each other in that learners tended to rely mainly on direct requests in most situations in which English native speakers preferred conventionally indirect requests with appropriate downgrading, which demonstrated that native speakers were far more polite than learners. In addition, EFL learners differed considerably from ESL learners in the use of request strategies and downgrading. The latter was more proficient than the former in employing conventionally indirect requests, and using downgrading for the expression of politeness. Finally, some teaching suggestions were provided for helping learners in an EFL context to promote their socio-pragmatic competence.

        Compliment and Compliment Response Behaviors of College Students in English Chatting

        The purpose of this paper was to examine pragmatic abilities of EFL Korean learners in the performance of two speech acts, compliment and compliment response in authentic situations. To this end, 72 Korean college students engaged in on-line chatting for one semester, and chatting transcripts were analyzed to find characteristics of the two acts realized by students. It was shown that compliments of Korean students looked formulaic and sounded similar to those of English native speakers though they were limited in a repertoire of syntactic patterns and lexical items. They also responded to compliments by using nonacceptance strategies more often than acceptance strategies, unlike native speakers. The differences between the two groups were explained mainly by L1 transfer effects in which Korean students made frequent use of their L1 socio-cultural norms for L2 speech act performance. Some suggestions were given to help them overcome such L1 influence.

        A synchronic note on early American English

        The purpose of this paper was to take an in-depth look at early American English around the 17th and 18th century when immigrants from different European countries started to move into the New World. The paper attempted to describe early American English in relation to the process of immigration and settlement from a historical perspective. With a focus on major features of early American English such as uniformity, archaism and richness of lexicon, the paper tried to answer the questions such as how settlement influenced the formation and distribution of regional dialects across the continent, why immigrants tended to show a preference for a uniform way of speaking rather than choosing a variety of regional dialects for communication, and what role foreign languages played in the development of early American English. The overall findings based on the answers to these questions showed how American English went through a variety of processes and changes at the early stages of its development to become a national language later. The paper concluded with some remarks about the implications of the findings for EFL learning and the direction of future research on early American English.
