Objectives : Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is associated with increasing risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality but the risk of stroke associated with the MetS is less well established. The objective of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of MetS in stroke patients. Methods : We analyzed the data of 806 patients with acute ischemic stroke from Hanbang Stroke Registry supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology of Korea. Subjects' enrollment was done in the oriental medical hospitals of 4 universities located in the metropolitan region from April 2007 to August 2008. We analyzed all registered data and evaluated the prevalence of MetS and specific components of MetS. Results : The prevalence of MetS in stroke patients according to American Heart Association/National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (AHA/NHLBI) criteria was 59.6%. The prevalence according to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) criteria was 41.6%. The prevalence of female patients was higher than that of male patients (71.8% vs 51% by AHA/NHLBI criteria; 61.7% vs 27.7% by IDF criteria). The prevalence of central obesity, low HDL cholesterol and hypertension was higher in female patients. There was no significant relationship between MetS and stroke subtype. Conclusions : This work gives us the basic data on the association between MetS and risk of stroke. There should be the prospective cohort studies to evaluate MetS and the risk of stroke.

Background and purpose: Arterial stiffness is an important, independent determinant of cardiovascular risk. Pulse wave velocity (PWV) has been used as a valuable index of arterial stiffness and as a surrogate marker for atherosclerosis. The Framingham risk score was developed using categorized risk factors to predict the 10 year absolute risk of developing coronary heart disease (CHD). This algorithm is established using recommended guidelines for blood pressure, total cholesterol, and high density lipoprotein cholesterol in addition to age, smoking history and history of diabetes. Tongxinluo(TXL) has been shown to have anti hyperlipidemic activity and anti atherogenic effects. To determine its efficacy and safety, we examined whether TXL improves PWV, ABI, Framingham score, blood pressure, and lipid profile in high risk group of cardiovascular diseases. Subjects and methods: 49 subjects with the high risk of cardiovascular diseases were recruited. Subjects were administered TXL with the dose of 1110mg three times a day for 8 weeks. baPWV, ABI, Framingham risk score, Blood pressure and serum lipid profile were assessed at baseline and after 4 and 8weeks. Results: Total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglyceride, total lipid and phospolipid significantly decreased after 4 weeks of medication. Total cholesterol, total lipid and phospolipid significantly decreased after 8 weeks of medication. There were no significant changes in Framingham risk scores, ABI, PWV and blood pressure. On safety assessment, there were no adverse effects, hepatic or renal toxicity. Conclusion: We suggest that TXL is a safe and useful herbal medicine for hyperlipidemia and as for anti-atherognic effects, further research would be necessary.

The main purpose of this study is to analyse economic feasibility of low-carbon-oriented gear for anchovy boat seine. The results of benefit/cost analysis showed that use of the low-carbon fishing gear is economically feasible. Considering the fuel saving and relatively low CO2 emission by reducing the resistance of gear, net present value by such type 1 gear improvement was estimated about -2,490~-1,580 million won with the benefit-cost ratio 0.81~0.88. And net present value by such type 2 gear improvement was estimated about 6,540~7,780 million won with the benefit-cost ratio 1.79~1.94. Development of low-carbon trawl gear would render significant contributions to reducing CO2 emission in fishing operations and lead to reduce fishing costs due to fuel savings.

The object of this study was to examine the relationship between arteriosclerosis and oriental medical diagnosis of the patients who had suffered ischemic stroke. The degree of arteriosclerosis of the patients was assessed by cardio-ankle vascular index(CAVI), and diagnostic criteria used for all patients were deficiency of ki, deficiency of blood, blood stasis and stagnation of water. One hundred four patients were included and their general characteristics, CAVI and oriental diagnosis were evaluated. Results showed a significantly strong correlation between CAVI and blood stasis. These results suggest a close relationship between arterioslcerosis and blood static syndrome as defined by oriental medicine. If so, diagnosis of blood static syndrome is a reilable predictor of arteriosclerosis.

This paper presents a method of the constructing DEM(Digital Elevation Model) from the image data acquired from a commercial map using the scanner. Data acquisition, thinning, mark elimination, linking the broken line, elevation interpolation and 3D display processing are performed and the results are satisfatory.
