Evaluation of larvicidal activities of Chamaecyparis obtusa and Thuja orientalis oils against 4th-instar larvae of Aedes aegypti and Culex pipiens pallens revealed larvicidal activities of leaf oils extracted from C. obtusa and T. orientalis were significantly higher than those of stem, fruit, and seed oils. Strong mortality was observed in age class II of C. obtusa and T. orientalis against Ae. aegypti and Cx. pipiens pallens larvae. These results show both leaf part and age class II of C. obtusa and T. orientalis have strong larvicidal activity against Ae. aegypti and Cx. pipiens pallens. Leaf oils of C. obtusa and T. orientalis leaves show promise as natural larvicides against Ae. aegypti and Cx. pipiens pallens.

The hypoglycemic effect of mulberry leaves using alloxan-induced diabetic mice was investigated. The hypoglycemic effect of mulberry leaves was significantly affected with anaerobic incubation up to for 6 hrs. The body weight of mice treated with 20% anaerobic conditioned mulberry leaves was higher than that in the control group. Mulberry leaves which were treated with anaerobic condition significantly decreased blood glucose level in alloxan-induced type I diabetes mice. Furthermore, glucose tolerance was significantly recovered by feeding mulberry leaves anaerobically treated. Pathological analysis revealed that the disappearance of insulin-secreting beta-cells in the islets of Langerhans from the alloxan induced diabetic mice was strongly inhibited in the mulberry leaves feeding group. The content of 1-deoxynojirimycin increased up to 5% in detached mulberry leaves incubated under nitrogen gas for 6 hrs. Nevertheless, it is not clear whether the synthesis of 1-deoxynojirimycin is increased or the degradation of it is decreased. Overall, results obtained from this study indicate that the hypoglycemic effect was increased by the mulberry leaves with anaerobic treatment.

식품과 사료에서 곰팡이독소 오염은 세계적으로 중요한 문제이다. 곰팡이독소는 곰팡이의 이차대사산물로서 인축중독증을 야기하며 경제적인 손실을 초래한다. Aflatoxin, ergot alkaloid, fumonisin, ochratoxin, tremorgenic toxin, trichothecene 및 zearalenone 등이 식품과 사료에서 흘러 발생하는 곰팡이독소이다. 어떤 곰팡이는 하나 이상의 곰팡이독소를 생산하고, 또 어떤 곰팡이독소는 여러 종의 곰팡이에서 생성되기 때문에 여러 곰팡이독소가 함께 발견된다. 곰팡이독소의 발생에 영향을 끼치는 요인으로는 인위적으로 조절할 수 있는 보관과 환경적 조건도 포함된다. 기후와 같은 비본질적인 요인, 진균류의 계통 특이성 및 계통 변이와 같은 본질적인 요인 및 독소발생의 불안정성은 조절하기 어렵다. 곰팡이독소는 한 종의 동물에 있어서의 감수성과 종에 의존하며 인간에게 갖가지의 만성적 또는 급성적인 영향을 미친다. 그러나 반추동물은 곰팡이독소에 저항력을 가지고 있으며, 이는 반추동물의 위에 존재하는 미생물들이 곰팡이독소의 활성을 억제할 수 있기 때문이다. 곰팡이독소 피해의 경제적인 파급효과는 인축의 수명 단축, 축산물 생산감소, 오염된 식량과 사료의 처리 및 곰팡이독소의 문제점 해결을 위한 연구비용 등을 포함한다. 곰팡이독소 피해감소를 위한 국제적인 노력이 계속 진행되고 있지만 최근에 World Trade Organization이 발효되면서 동 식물이 지역간 자유로운 이동으로 곰팡이독소 피해 경감대책뿐만 아니라 피해측정이 어려워지고 있다.

This review discusses the effects and roles of insect hormones and insect growth regulators (IGRs) on vitellogenesis in adult insects. Insect vitellogenesis is regulated by hormones such as juvenile hormone (JH), ecdysteroids, and neurosecretory hormones (ovaryecdysteroidogenic hormone: OEH) released by neurosecretory cells, diet, and other elements(male specific protein of sperm fluid). In the fat bodies, the vitellogenins are synthesized by the stimulation of JH released by corpus allatum (CA) and ecdysteroids produced by follicle cells with the ovary in most insects. Furthermore, vitellogenins are released into the hemolymph, transported to the ovarioles by carrier protein, and incorporated into oocytes for the developing ovary. Of IGRs, juvenile hormone and its mimics such as methoprene and pyriproxifen appear to have pharmacological effects such as membrane lysis, destruction of salivary grand and midgut epithlial cells, fat body cells, and ovarian tissue, and also anti-juvenile hormone such as precocenes Ⅰ and Ⅱ appear to have specific cytotoxicity such as inhibition of corpus allatum and oocytes development. These results suggest that IGRs may be useful as agents for integrated pest management.

Ethanol extracts from 46 vegetables were tested their insecticidal activities toward five agricultural insect pests and four stored-product insect pests. The efficacy varied with both agricultural insects/stored-product insects and vegetable species used. Potent insecticidal activities, at the concentration of 5,000 ppm, were produced from extracts of Nelumbo nucifera and Ulva lactuca against Myzus persicae, Zea mays and Z. mays(leaf) against Niiaparoata lugens, Citrullus vulgaris(seed) and U. lactuca against Plutella xylostella, N. nucifera, Z. mays, and Z. mays(leaf) against Spodoptera litura, and C. vulgaris (seed), Daucus carota, Helianthus annuus (leaf), H. annuus (flower), Lactuca sativa, and Zingiber officinale against Tetranychus urticae. Potent insecticidal activities at the concentration of 2,500 ppm were exhibited from the extracts of N. nucifera and U. lactuca against M. persicae, Z. mays against N. lugens, C. vulgaris (seed) and U. lactuca against P. xylostella, N. nucifera and Z. mays against S. liiura, and C. vulgaris (seed), H. annuus (flower), and L. sativa against T. urticae. Against four stored-product insect pests at 50 ppm, extracts of C. vulgaris (seed) and Cucurbita moschata (seed) against Sitophilus oryzae and C. vulgaris (seed), H. annuus (seed), and Z. officinale against Plodia interpunctella revealed potent insecticidal activities over 80% mortality. In tests with Callosobruchus chinensis and Lasiodenna serricorne, extracts of all vegetables tested exhibited meager and no activity.
